It would be nice to get some input/opinions regarding the housing situation from BU students.
eg., single-occupancy, same-sex floors, different BU areas like Bay State, etc.
I personally would love to stay in one of those cute little brownstone apartments in a non-isolated area (ie., on the central part of the campus)… so what do you suggest for me?

There are many threads about this. There are no isolated parts of campus. South is the most removed but it's almost all apartments and is thus largely inhabited by upper classmen who want to avoid a meal plan and who want to live more independently. Most freshman choose to live in the big dorms like Warren or on West Campus because they are far more social places. My kid lives in a small dorm that's actually in Kenmore. The living conditions are better - semi-private baths - and it's very quiet (which is good and bad).

The brownstones on Baystate are usually picked by upperclassmen but there are specialty houses - from language houses, etc. All are described on the BU housing site. You can choose to be on a floor, like a COM floor in Warren. And they have things like a Writer's floor in Shelton - perhaps because that's the hotel where Eugene O'Neill died.

well, incoming freshmen have like a 2% chance of getting a brownstone so i wouldn't set my sights on that. apartments are for sophomores & up [excluding stuvi which is only for juniors and seniors]

single occupancy rooms are small ... if you want to live on bay state there's towers, shelton, & myles. warren is super popular but it's on comm ave & personally, i couldn't live off of comm ave. towers only has single sex floors, all other dorms are coed with the exception of some specialty floors which are all female.

chances are you're going to end up in towers, warren, or west. the housing survey is, in my opinion, a joke unless you are practical and request warren, west, or towers.

the only isolated housing is danielson which is by newbury street but people who live there, love it.

also, housing is nice. i live in towers & love it. west is too far & a few of my friends there have had mice in their rooms. warren is also nice but there are far too many people [1,000 + or something like that] ... plus i hate the 3 escalators you have to go up just to get to the 4th level entrance.

i feel like that response was all over the place! i hope it made some sense ...

West is near CGS, CFA, SHA and FitRec. Warren, Hojo (a former hotel) and Towers are near CAS, COM, ENG, etc. Myles is in Kenmore. Danielsen is actually all the way in Back Bay and is the dorm farthest from campus - though it is the nicest area.

ohhhh noo.. after submitting the housing survey, i realized that i picked shelton (ie., the haunted dorm) as my 4th choice. i hope the BU people don't shoot down my 1st 3 choices and give me shelton lol

did you take the housing survey? because if you did, there's a section where you can easily request a roommate, as long as they mutually requested you as well.

you're not guaranteed housing in the brownstone as a trustee scholar. it's specialty housing & you can request to live in that brownstone [if you're a trustee scholar] but keep in mind seniors, juniors, & sophomore trustee scholars can choose to live there leaving minimal spaces for freshmen.

With Warren being the second largest non-military dorm, it's the perfect place to have your dorm experience. West and Towers are also populated by a lot of freshmen. As much as everyone complains about how small rooms can be, they aren't all that bad and you learn to live.

I lived in Hojo the past two years. They are mostly triples with a few doubles and singles. It's very close to SMG, SAR, SED, and COM. I'd recommend it over Towers, Warren, and West. It isn't as social, but it isn't a zoo. So if you don't mind the peacefulness, then Hojo is a good place.

West is about a 15-20 minute walk to CAS where you may take most of your classes first year.

We plan to visit BU on Apr 20th. Would like to see the dorms and let my S fill the housing survey thereafter. Do you think it will be too late in terms of finding select housing?

Does anybody know if you usually live with somebody from your school( if you are from CAS you will live with another CAS student) or not?
What about CGS kids? Do they live only with CGS kids?

If you want, you can live with CGS kids. You can choose to live on a COM floor and I know some other colleges also have specific floors. It's elective, not required. CGS kids often prefer to live in West because it's close to CGS.
