students from different schools are put on the same floors. even specialty floors like engineering or COM may sometimes have a few non-ENG or non-COM students on that floor. however, your freshman roommate will usually be from the same school as yours. that's true maybe 75% of the time.

the closest dorm to SHA is west campus, which is the second biggest BU dorm complex. traditionally, it's considered one of the "louder" dorms, although i personally don't think it's necessarily loud.. it's just more social than most other dorms. i've lived here at west for 2 years and i love it. when i welcome floormates walking by to talk to me, i leave my door open, and when i need to study, i close my door and usually most noise is blocked out.

1019 comm ave is another dorm close to SHA. it's a smaller place. each suite has 3 doubles connected together to share one bathroom (6 people to a private bathroom). your chance of getting that dorm as a freshman is pretty low though.

still another dorm close to SHA is the student village, or "stuvi". it's apartment style, with most suites having 4 private singles, 2 bathrooms, 1 kitchen, and 1 common area. u will not live here as a freshman.

btw, there is no guaranteed graduate housing at BU so the housing issues really don't apply to grad students; as a grad student you can be an RA or live in selected areas, like the Fisk House or Warren Hall but almost all grad students are expected to live off campus.

Odds of getting a single as a freshman are small so the quality of social life "if" is not a real worry. If you're in a small "dorm," like one of the little buildings near Kenmore, it will be very quiet and not as social as a big place. On the other hand, if that's what you'd prefer, don't list any big dorms in your housing info thing.

If on my freshman housing survey i put down my first and second choices, west and warren, and then put the brownstones down as my 3rd 4th and 5th choices, am i more likely to get put in those dorms?

My d lives on the com floor in warren and loves loves it! She was unsure before starting but she's so happy she chose to live with other com students.

Mmm not a 100% chance...when West and Warren fill up, they just put freshmen wherever there are spots. Get your form in asap if you've got a priority!

BUBailey I would think that it's pretty close to a 99.99% chance if you put it as your first choice. Most upperclassmen are interested in other places and I would believe very few put it as their first choice, which leaves lots of room. You will almost certainly get West or Warren if you put them as your first choice. (Granted you might not get a double or single.) I think it's highly unlikely to get something else. Not to get arrogant or anything, but freshman have much lower priority when compared to upperclassmen. They'll stick you where they have room (except for StuVi).

to be honest, i have a lot of friends who wanted west or warren and got myles, etc. as freshmen. warren fits 1800 students, west im not sure. but there’s 4500 freshmen, and many sophomores choose to stay in west or warren since they feel they can’t do any better. i was one of them, and my sophomore year in warren, half of my floor was sophomores. so it’s definitely not guaranteed, only likely.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking of too. Again, things will be different this year because of StuVi2, but I worked for Orientation after freshman year, and the students coming in later in the summer who had filled out their housing apps later had been placed in random apartments in South or on Bay State. This isn’t always bad, but a lot of them were upset because they wanted the social aspect of Warren and West. Warren and West do fill up pretty quickly because believe it or not a lot of freshmen are very interested in them. And once everywhere fills up, they just put people where upperclassmen have decided to graduate early or study abroad or whatever, usually in South or on Bay State. My roommate last year was a freshman who put down West or Warren but ended up on Bay State.

There are three different buildings in West campus complex that house 1,850. So if you put either of those as your first choice, you’ll probably get it. It’s just the likely occurence and a very likely one at that.

PICK WARREN… Best choice for a freshman. Unless you are in CGS, CFA, or SHA then put West cuz its way closer to your dorms. If you have any questions PM me.
