Any opinions on freshmen in honors housing? We’re planning on taking a 2nd look next Friday.

There’s an honors house on Bay State Road which is nice but probably a bit difficult to get into. There’s also an honors house in South Campus. Your choice, really. You’d be mixed in with upperclassmen, probably more than you would in west or warren, so keep that in mind. I don’t know if there are any honors floors in the dorms…I don’t think so but don’t quote me.

i think that almost all the posters can agree on here that, while the brownstones and apartments are wonderful, as a freshman it REALLY would be well-advised to live in warren or west or towers, with hojo, and maybe myles as 2nd choices. you meet plenty of people in your classes, depending on your major, but the way that freshmen socialize is primarily with their floors and residence halls. you meet people on your floor, in the dining hall, in the printer lab, and in the study lounges. so even though, as any dorm, the rooms are not ideal, if you put yourselves out there and meet people, you really won’t care about the size of your room. and trust me, college goes by so fast, especially your freshman year, so if you really hate the dorm life its only about 8 months. my freshman year of college was the absolute best year of my life; i lived in warren c tower but all my friends were in a tower, and we had a blast.

What about requesting Shelton as first choice for a freshman? I really want a suite…bad idea or good?

i mean, shelton has a dining hall, but typically sophomores and juniors go for it…it all depends on what you really want. definitely go for shelton or myles if you’re that set on a suite, but if i could do my freshman year all over again, i still would’ve picked warren.

Where are the brownstones near Kenmore square? How is security?

there’s brownstones on bay state road, all along the road, lower bay state near myles is mostly apartment style and as you near the towers building they become dorm style (where you’d have no kitchen but a meal plan). there’s no security guards for the brownstones, but you do have to swipe into the brownstone with your id card and you have a key for your room. you can have guests but its made clear that you should only let people in that you personally know. there have been break-ins where people who left their laptops in the common areas had them stolen. however, these have been few and far between and result from someone letting in a random person.

Unless you’re in some specialty house, you won’t be in a brownstone as a freshman. They are too desirable. Baystate Rd is a beautiful, tree-lined street that runs from Kenmore (behind Myles - the dorm) up to the GSU.

The entire area is safe, barring the occasional theft and the stuff that might happen at 2AM, which in this part of the city is not often much. To be blunt, the biggest risk around Kenmore for the last 3 years has been either fire - been several apartment fires in non-BU-owned buildings - or the police lines when the Red Sox win a playoff series.

There’s still a chance you could get a brownstone. My roommate last year was a freshman and we were in a renovated brownstone. Upperclassmen are usually the ones who take leaves of absence or choose to go abroad after picking housing, so any leftover freshmen who weren’t in the other dorms get placed in these random spots left over.

But don’t count on it.

And some of the brownstones don’t have swipe-in access. You’d have a key for the vestibule door and a key to your room. Security basically the same.

I haven’t heard particularly good things about BU housing
mostly that dorms are crappy

Is this true?

If I put down my housing preferences like this:

Warren, 2. Towers, 3. West, 4. Shelton, 5. Bay State brownstones

is it certain that they’ll put me in Warren?

Pharmagal - your daughter is going to want Warren if she is in anything othern that CGS, SHA, or CFA. its the most central and its the easiest place to meet people. if you have any questions, PM me

Hanita- nothing is certain. They’re just going to put you where they can .But it’s very likely you’ll get one of your top 3 choices.

Rnay- read through the thread. The dorms are not awesome, but they’re like most other freshmen dorms. You live there for the experience, not the accomodations. Other than that though, BU housing is pretty stellar. The brownstones are gorgeous and StuVi 1 and 2 are state-of-the-art.

Hanita, BU Bailey is right when she said nothing is certain, but you’ll most probably get Warren.

For current BU students, do any of you know if Towers West is going to be renovated this summer? I just finished my housing process (sophomore) and got West Tower.

its up in the air right now, about a 50/50 shot and no one will really know until the summer. it was signed on to be renovated, but with the recession the trustees are arguing about whether or not they should be spending a million dollars to renovate it. if it doesn’t get renovated, the plus is that you have bigger closets and lots of shelving in west tower.

Hopefully it will get renovated. Brand new furniture sounds like… fun! BTW, my room is right in front of the bathroom. I checked today… haha

Anyone have any information on 575 Commonwealth Avenue rooms? It looks nice and it’s listed as an option but what are the chances of a freshman getting a room there?

there might be a good chance of you getting a room, but if you did it would most likely be a triple (there are VERY few doubles & singles, and they’re usually occupied by upperclassmen). there is a bathroom for each triple. the beds are all lofted, and you can unloft them, and the furniture fits underneath the desk. they put 2-3 wardrobes & 3 dressers in each room, the 3rd lacking wardrobe would be if there was an area in the wall with a post between the sections; that would be the 3rd closet. the outside is very un-appealing, but the views are nice (you can see charles river or maybe even fenway) and the bathroom is a nice feature. no dining hall in the dorm, but towers is right around the corner.

I wouldn’t mind having a triple and it seems to be close to the campus I’m just having an issue with sharing a bathroom with a whole floor of girls. Do you know if BU does the personality quiz sort of thing that matches you with someone compatible?
