BU housing

it seems pretty weird to end up with a random roommate, would there be chances for us to swap in the end? or should I put someone down in the housing survey (mutually of course)

Thank you!

oh sorry one more question, if i’m going to SMG, which dorm is the closest?
right now my order is:

Warren Towers (700 Commonwealth Avenue)
The Towers (140 Bay State Road)
West Campus (273, 275, 277 Babcock Street)
Myles Standish Hall and Annex (610, 632 Beacon Street)
1019 Commonwealth Avenue

do you think its okay?
thank you

If I request to room with 2 other friends, how much of a chance do I have to get a triple at the HoJo (575 Commonwealth Ave.)?

How far is the HoJo to CGS and CAS?

On a related note, the most important thing to me are bathrooms. Are there any dorms commonly given to freshmen that have private bathrooms (or at least not common bathrooms shared by a whole floor…)?

Anson- your list looks pretty good. Warren and The Towers are very close to SMG; West and 1019 are as far as you can get. Myles isn’t terrible.

RedOktober, I’m not sure your chances, but there are certainly more triples in HoJo than any other dorm. I think in West, there are 4 triples for floor- not sure about Warren.

The dorms with private, or at least not floor-shared, bathrooms available to freshmen are the Hojo, 1019, Myles, Danielsen, the brownstones, Shelton, and the apartments that aren’t Stuvi. But as far as the ones commonly given to freshmen…I’d say the Hojo and Myles are your best bet.

If you don’t list any large dorm, you may end up in a smaller building, like the one that’s actually in Kenmore. Those have bathrooms shared with a few rooms. BTW, that kind of dorm is very, very quiet.

I know there are a lot of people who are fussy out there about roommates. I prefer random, but that’s just me. You never know who you’re going to get as a roommate unless you mutually request them. I lived on the Fine Arts floor and got a random roommate freshman year. That worked for me—we are BEST friends, even in our second semester of junior year. I admit that is a little less random since I requested the Fine Arts floor.

Not that it’s always a bad idea, but my friend selected someone who went to her school, because she was worried about her roommate stealing her stuff (poor reason), and she ended up hating her roommate because of what she THOUGHT she knew about her. I mean I don’t think it would be a bad idea to live with someone you know, but IMO I think it’s best to know them REALLY well or not at all because then you either know what to expect, or have no expectations. (Wouldn’t it be sad to find out you didn’t have as much in common with someone as you thought you did?)

On the other hand, I do know people who have had problems with random roommates—bad roommates who participated in unsavory practices. I had one friend who had problems with a girl wearing her clothes and apparently the girl didn’t care and took Facebook pictures in them without my friends permission! :-O

Eventually, both of these people changed rooms. Just be sure to notify your RA of problems that occur first, if that doesn’t work, seek help from the Office of Housing/Building Director.

How far is 575 Commonwealth (The HoJo) to CGS and CAS respectively?
What about Warren and Myles?

hojo is far from cgs, close to cas. same with warren and same with myles, though myles is the farthest from cas out of those that you listed. all of these dorms are very far from cgs; west campus is best for cgs residents. another reason that living with your friends might not be good lol: if one of u is in cas and the other in cgs, whoever sacrifices for the dorm life will resent the other roommate terribly when they miss the shuttle and have to walk to class in the snow for 20 minutes.

BU’s site has an interactive map. Look up CGS and you see it’s west of the BU Bridge. Myles is down in Kenmore Sq. so you’re looking at a hike.

best dorms imo distance-wise for ppl at the more commonly asked schools by closest to slightly not so close but still close lol!

smg/sar: hojo, towers, shelton, myles, warren, baystate. south still very doable, take the rape stairs :stuck_out_tongue:
cas/eng: warren, baystate, south campus, towers… etc
cgs/cfa/sha: west campus, stuvi, 1019

the dorms go something like this

myles - shelton - hojo/towers - SMG/SED/SAR - baystate - CAS - warren - south campus - lil intersection - CFA - stuvi - CGS - west campus - SHA? - 1019

not as clear on the schools down on west campus since ive never been in cgs or sha, but i’m assuming it looks something like that

haha don’t forget danielsen at the veeeeery beginning of that list, but that was definitely a great idea for the incoming frosh, precocious!

On my freshman housing survey I put down Bay State Road brownstones and Myles Standish Hall and Annex as my first and second choices, and then my 3rd, 4th, and 5th choices are Danielsen Hall, 575 Commonwealth Ave., and South Campus brownstones. Which one am I more likely to get in?
BTW I put that I’m interested in Chinese House. ;P

I don’t think you’re going to get Bay State…Myles seems like it is a lot more possible.

Then again, the Chinese House thing will probably help a little bit.

I applied to College of Letters Arts and Sciences(CAS) and i was wondering which dormitories are good for me… Also, I was thinking of switching to college of communications and i want to know if the dorms near CAS are also near COC. I prefer bigger rooms and non-communal bathrooms!

cas and com are very close to each other so you should still look at the same dorms. most likely, you won’t have a big room or a non-communal bathroom. there’s always a chance, but as i’ve said before, i would highly recommend sticking it out for a year in a regular dorm to get the social aspect of college.

Which dorm do you think I will get (or have a good chance at getting) if my choices are:

shelton, 2. towers, 3. myles standish, 4. bay state brownstones, 5. warren.

^ i think you have a decent shot at shelton, especially if you apply for a specialty floor.

if not, you will most likely end up in towers.

I got into west tower for 2nd year. sigh hopefully the tower gets renovated this summer (which i don’t think will happen considering that Pres. Brown is trying to shut down ResNet/computer labs in Warren)

Ok, so picking a dorm is like the lottery. In a perfect world, if one wanted a dorm where they could really get some good studying done as a freshman, what would be a good pick?
