Bucknell- Hand written letter from Student/Admissions

Just got a hand written letter from a student working in the admissions office encouraging me to apply to Bucknell.
Has any of you heard of this before? Does it really mean anything?

Sorry to insist -- anyone that would know about this type of practice fot this or even other colleges?

What a personal touch!
Have you recently had a tour or visited the school? Am curious what your intended major is and your stats.

Hope you don't mind sharing, because obviously Bucknell has targeted you as a top applicant.

I assume you are not a recruited athlete because the coach would be contacting you. Any chance you are a top basketball player, because I am sure Bucknell would LOVE to duplicate last year's amazing performance :)

I visited the school in March. Sent them stats in June through CollegeBoard.
Also posted this in Parents Forum. Feedback there is that this does not mean a thing and it is just a part of the schools' marketing system.

I just checked the Parents Forum to see what responses you received from this question. I noticed that no one specifically said their children received hand written invitations to apply to the school.

I see that you are a dual Amer/Latino citizenship, with SAT's in the range that Bucknell likes. Are you aware that Bucknell gets more than 8,000 applications, and can you imagine how many more requests for information.

I find it hard to believe that the admissions at Bucknell needs to spend their time with hand written notes. Sorry to disagree with the others, but I think this might be meaningful.......................

I would think a hand written letter would certainly be a sign of interest. I am not aware that they send out any such promo mailings that are hand written. My son's "likely" letter from Bucknell was still typed, not hand written.

Oh...and there was only one senior on this year's basketball team, and that center still has two years to go! :)

i got one today, she sent me an article to read she said she thought i would be interested in reading it...eh its still in the middle of nowhere lol build a huge city around it and im in!

Two words for ya Doogie....ROAD TRIP!!!!

NYC, Philly, D.C., Baltimore....you don't always have to stay in Lewisburg.

yea but still, how far is lewisburg from one of those lol

About 3 hours. Kids go for the weekend all the time. But there is a lot on campus, too. My son was thinking about road tripping to a Green Day concert, but then Fall Out Boy came to campus.

idk...im planning on pre-med and i need to be around a busy hospital, im gonna lose it if im not lol...i live breathe and sleep EMS, hospitals, and business right now. I need the research opportunities and experience too

Bad news, my son got one and then was waitlisted!

Yes... a Biology student from Bucknell had suggested I applied trhough a letter and I did apply. She had encouragedme that Bucknell's biology department was great. I will be attending Bucknell this year. GO CLASS OF 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doogie - Bucknell is about 20 min. from the Geisinger Med. Ctr. - which is the premier facility for pretty much all of north-central PA..and I think I read that the head of Geisinger is on the board of trustees at Bucknell.

I also read about a group of students who are either EMS or volunteer firemen (or maybe a mix of both) with the Lewisburg FD. They all live together in one of the special interest houses and respond to emergencies as needed, and as they are available around their classes.

Look around the website - I'm sure there must be something on them.

for the handwritten letter question...yes, it is part of a marketing strategy but not in a bad way in which you may think. if you got a letter that means that Bucknell considers you to be a great candidate. we do not send everyone that visits us or shows interest a letter because that would just be tedious and a big waste of time. we write letters to students who show interest or have visited and that are a good candidate because well...everyone is visiting so many colleges at one time that you may start leaving schools at the bottom of your list. these letters are just a reminder of what bucknell has to offer aka the articles. we do want our number of applications to increase but so does every other college and that is not our sole reason for the letters. so iqq....be happy that you got a letter. it's a good thing and if you really like Bucknell then I would recommend showing us interest aka emailing, one day/overnight visits, etc.

and for Doogie...we are about 2-3 hours away from other cities but we always have trips and theres buses that leave from our town. Also, I am pre-med and I know that my four years here will do wonders for me in med. school. Our acceptance rate to med school is great and we have amazing research opportunities. You can work with a professor starting at the end of your first year and they will teach you everything they know about your topic and the equipment you use. We also do shadowing with alumni and other doctors in the area. A lot of us do volunteer work in the summer or do things with Geisinger during the year. And you will be extremely busy during the year with clubs and academics that most students find it easier to do work with hospitals over the summer. And we have a SERV organization on campus that works like the EMS. They do have their own house that they can live in and well....the kids in it are extremely outgoing and find it to be an amazing experience. So being in our rural setting will not limit you as a pre-med major but if you absolutely love the city life then I guess this would not be the right place for you. I personally love it because theres not as many distractions that one may find at schools in the city. And theres always so many activities going on during the weekends here that one really does not get bored.

Thank you for all the info.
I visited Bucknell in March and liked it a lot. I am planning to go again in the fall for an overnight.

I got one of those too, along with an article about the program I was interested in. I'm not sure if it meansanything, seeing as I was admitted, but it can't be a bad thing! I also recieved a "likely letter" where probably back in february I was told admissions was likely for me, so if you get that, it's a good sign that your in. Yay Bucknell '09! :)

My son recieved a similiar letter today. He is on the mailing list but has not visited. He definitely plans to apply, but might not have time to visit. Does anyone know if Bucknell puts a lot of emphasis on pre application visits?

ya good ques

Yees they do, and try and emailing the students a few times. I remember last summer when I visited the admissions lady said that showing interest was important.
