Bulgarians - Accepted/Rejected?!

Mirela, Georgetown woooow that's great congrats, can u tell me what are you stats - SAT, SAT2 etc ???

I believe that you should find a kind of hook. For example, if you've been playing tennis for many years and you are particularly good at it and have won some competitions, or if you play the piano and have lots of conserts, modern dance, ballet, singing etc. You should distinguish yourself from the others and be that special someone with particular interest who would bring diversity to the college community. I believe that this was my weakest point because I've been trying to be jack of all trades and eventually come up to be master of none.

hey, mira, congrats! you must be very proud!
i got in mt holyoke. the dhl guy came today:) but the parents' contribution is not very low, so we'll see...
waiting for the ivies tonite... good luck to eb who is also waiting for their last words:P

Just got my rejection email from JHU. :) Nothing surprising.

Martin,
SAT I: 1460 (V720, M760)
SAT IIs: Writing 720, Math Ic 700, German 780
TOEFL: 287
GPA: 5.98
I'm so excited about the ivies tonight!! Good luck everyone!
Ckakalacheva, do you have other schools to expect? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I have a couple but I don't have much hope for them :) Fortunately, I'm accepted to IUB so I'm def going there this fall. :) Good luck with the Ivies!

Just an update on the admissions decisions I have received so far.
I'm also accepted at Mount Holyoke with a full ride. Smith gave me a wonderful financial aid package too, but it is nearly $2,300 less than what Mount Holyoke offers me. I see there are other Bulgarian girls who got in:) that's great. Congratulations to all of you who are accepted and good luck to those who are still waiting!

hey that makes a lot of bulgarian MHC ladies :)
i know about 2 girls who got in on ed and now at least another 3...
it's gonna be fun there:)

and also i just found out that i am accepted to grinnell but i don't know anything about the aid yet

I hope Grinnell offers you the aid you desire:)
As for MH, I am really excited to be admitted there, but I am also admitted in Smith with a full ride, so that makes the decision quite tough. Do you know any other Bulgarian girls who are accepted at Smith?
Congratulations on your acceptances, by the way;)

Vessy

Hi guys,
I know that this isn't the right place for posting such questions but I'm new here :) So, my SAT 1 is on 4th of June and I was wondering do u have any advices especially from the people who scored +1450 :))

thanks

PS: any advices besides "studying hard" :)

hei, marto

it depends...whether u r good in math or in verbal...for me it was important to score over 620 on the verbal because i was sure i will have more than 780 on the math...sooo if u r good in math u need at least 650 on the verbal part..which in my view is not very hard studying but it is SOME studying. i don't know where u study but it depends on your english vocab at the moment to decide how much u need to study... and there is always luck..because i knew quite a lot sat words, but when i took the sat they wren't in it:P (a good excuse ha;)) my advice is to learn "the most frequently met words " wordlist and to find some of those books with interesting wordlists... UP YOUR SCORE is such a book. also the best way to learn sat words in me opinion is to read english books (i mean old english) such as Jane Eyre, Gone with Wind, Wuthering Highs (not sure about the spelling of the last) and so on. i know they might be boring for u, but they have plenty of sat words. well, that's all i can help

but remember that sat is not everything...to get in u will also need good recs, solid sat2s, electives, community service is very nice, good essays and if u have a hook it will be perfect

good luck! oh...now i remember that they've changed the sat...so this may be irrelevent...u'll now have to write an essay so this is where u should practise a lot and be sure to meet all their stupid criteria about organization...and since u won't have analogies (blah!) in your test, then you can really cut off the words learning. just make a lot of practise tests (of the new type of course)

good luck again! hope this will be of some help

thanks man that was helpful
btw I'm studying at Romain Rolland FLS, Stara Zagora - class 11a :)
and one more question - who do u think is the most appropriate and useful person to get my recommendations from ? and can u be more specific about the EC activities, I have a lot but I'm not sure whether they will be recognized in the US ???

thanks

mmm about the recommendations: you must have one from your college counc. (which in the literal sence of the word you don't have so take it from your class teacher (klasen rykowoditel:))) then you have another two: if you are particularly good at something like math or physics - take one from that teacher and be sure that he will stress out that strengths. (for example: i am good at math and i deal with linguistics, so i asked my math and bulgarian language teachers for recs)
i also had a rec from an employer (this is highly recommended!!!), an english teacher who is a native speaker and who taught me CAE and CPE classes in the british council and from a classmate who is a gold winner in math competitions and in the rec he discussed both my strengths in math and as a person. if u do some kind of sport and u r good at it, ask for a rec from your coach. but don't overload them with recs. apart from the 3 obligatory ones, send no more than 2 more (in my case i sent diff rec to diff colleges: some of them do require peer recs)
now, about the electives: well mine weren't that much...at school i took electives in math and physics and computer science, apart from that i also was on the school's math, linguistics and b-ball teams. academic teams are very very important to them. high school sports team also. so these two types do make a good impression. if you have an interesting hobby, it's always nice to tell them about it (for ex of you deal with web design, programming, or sth else...if you have some interesting research projects you can always send them or some nice slides...alsmost everything counts)
also`there is a catch: they always say that they need well-rounded students but it is not exactly true. while they are looking for well-rounded students, they are also looking for students who are passionate about something (in my essays i wrote that my background in math and passion about linguistics will make a good combination in my intended field of study)
if u want u can tell me what r your electives, but most probably they all will be more than welcome:)
well, that's what i think is important. remember though, that u never know. these adcoms are really really extremely strange and most of the times inconsistent with their decisions...there is no formula to get in(on CC i read about a guy with 1600/3x800/14 APs and some nice electives and he got rejected by harvard.../ a lot of other students are rejected by their safeties and get into their first choices...)

btw if your school is the one i think it is, i've heard really very good things about it.do u have an exchange program with the american college of sofia? if you do, you can try to make use of it: this is another thing that counts
well, that's for now. if i can help with sth else just ask..:)

Hey everyone, nice to see we have our own thread in this forum :)

I got admitted to Amherst and Colgate (+AMS) and waitlisted at 4-5 other schools. most of my safeties rejected me :)
it's all too random, but i'm happy to have 2 choices

frolik, wow! congrats! amherst and colgate are two really nice schools. and colgate was one of my very first choices, unfortunately they rejected me. where do you study? and which one do you plan to attend?

i'm from plovdiv
both coll's offer me the financial aid that i requested, so i think i prefer amherst. i went to their chats with international students and enjoyed it

frolik, that's cool. btw what are your stats? i am asking because a friend of mine is on amherst's wait-list, so i was wondering what are the stats of those admitted.

stats, as in exam results??
in the order i took the tests:
toefl 297
sat1 720V/800M
sat2 math IC 730
sat2 biology E 730
sat2 physics 780
sat2 math IIC 800
sat2 writing 800

this could be useful if your friend is looking for stuff like stats

wow, your stats rock! it's not surprising that you got in amherst and colgate. good job! and 10x:)
