Business Honors Program

Anybody else on College Confidential from Indiana get their acceptance/declined letters for the Business Honors Program today? Largest applicant pool and thus lowest acceptance rate this year.

I got in, hooray.

Congrats!!! I plan on applying next year. I hope I do good in my upcoming classes.

Congratulations!

Did the letter say how many applicants there were vs. how many accepted?

That is great news! How many people applied/got in this year. You probably took about the hardest schedule of anybody who got in, judging by the classes you have mentioned here. That is quite an accomplishment.

They said 260+ applied this year vs 150 last year, and they accept 130 every year.

That’s kind of strange. Last year’s letter said 300+ applied in 2008, not 150.

That is strange. Maybe they have been inflating/deflating numbers to make it look more selective than it actually is.

Way to go, maxellis. And thanks for all of the tips you’ve posted for the “newbies” like me on this site. Keep it coming once you’re an honors student next year!

hey maxellis, i’m planning on applying to the business honors program next year and i’m worried about finding a leadership role in an extracurricular activity as a freshman. what was your leadership position?

I am very happy for you! You have been so helpful to all us newbies, if that is any indication of your committment in general you definately deserve this!

I did a lot my freshman year. I was the Vice President of Eigenmann Leadership Council, a judicial board member of Eigenmann, a peer tutor for K201, a bronze medal member of Civic Leadership Development (it’s the largest Kelley School of Business club), I participated in Alternative Spring Break with Make-A-Wish/Give Kids the World at Disney World, and was on the club ultimate frisbee team.

If you want an easy position, I recommend being a chairman of the Judicial Board at your dorm (it’s like 3 hours a week), and being on a leadership council is even easier (but you need to be on an academic floor to be on the leadership council).

Peer tutoring will be great for your resume to show employers that you are good with access/excel.

Civic Leadership Development (CLD) is a volunteering club open to business school stundets only (although there have been talks of opening it up to all students). They have various levels of membership based on how many hours you volunteer. They have a website which shows you where volunteers are needed, you show up to volunteer, and then record how many hours you volunteered online. You get small prizes for volunteering.

Alternative Spring Break is associated with Civic Leadership Development. It’s what it sounds like; you spend a week volunteering and you can record that volunteering with CLD. They have a lot of cool places to spend spring break, and they offer scholarships to people who participate. The final cost out of pocket for me spending a week in florida was under $100.

The club ultimate team is just really fun. To be open, I have been put in charge of recruiting for the 09/10 season. This is what I look forward to on tuesdays, thursdays, and sundays. I made all of my friends with people on the ultimate team; we compete together, hang out together, party together, etc. It’s really like a frat without pledging (the people on the team who are also in a frat say they value the team more than their frats). However, it takes a couple months to get that close knit feeling for new people (there are always 100+ rookies at the first practice, and by the time the fall semester is over we are down to ~12 rookies). A lot of us live together off campus. Here is our highlight video of the 2009 season:

alright, thanks a lot for the ideas maxellis! and how competitive is the ultimate frisbee team? can you recruit me?

We have an A and a B team. The A team is very competitive; we practice 3 days a week and we are expected to be running/lifting/throwing at least 2 other days of the week. The goal of the A team is to win games. The B team is more relaxed; it’s about teaching people about basic rules, offenses/defenses, and having a good time. As of right now, the director of undergraduate admissions to Kelley is the B team coach (he plays ultimate and is a nice guy), but this could could change (plans aren’t definate until the start of fall practices).

In the fall we are going to split people up into experienced vs non-experienced, and we will form the official A and B teams over the winter. What team you make will ultimately depend on how much time and dedication you want to put forth. If in the fall you decide that ultimate is fun, but you want to focus on other things as well, you can play for the B team. If you decide that playing ultimate is really fun and you are willing to put a little extra effort, you will make the A team.

As a freshman last year, I had a pretty full plate between classes, clubs, and ultimate. But I was willing to show up to pratices and put forth two 2 hour workouts on days off of ultimate. I made the A team and ended up getting a lot of playing time.

We have a facebook group called “I want to play ultimate for IU in 2009/2010”. As the fall gets nearer, we will send out a couple updates about practices/parties/team dinners/halo tournament/etc. Here’s the link: [Search Names: I want to play ultimate for IU in 2009/2010 | Facebook](http://www.facebook.com/s.php?q=I+want+to+play+ultimate+for+IU+in+2009%2F2010&n=-1&k=400000000010&sf=r&init=srp#/group.php?gid=93972896726)

awesome, i just joined the group.

Did you have to move in early to be on the student government? McNutt’s housing group on facebook messaged me about the student government and said one would move in 8/14 if chosen for training. How set-in-stone is that? I’m interested in being in the business honors program, but my family already made arrangements for me to move in on 8/24 (the KLLC move-in day).

Thanks!

Eigenmann student government elections were held the second week after we moved in.

I got in too, and I was super involved as well. I agree that judicial board is a great way to get an easy leadership position, I was on it at Briscoe. Being in leadership activities is a key to the honors program. My grades weren’t amazing, but good. But the extras helped me a lot.

Nice! I will see you at the orientation meeting in August.

hoosier, if you don’t mind me asking, what was your gpa? below 3.7?

No, 3.8. I know that if you don’t have a 3.7, the admission people will not look at your application.
