They did for a fact visit the campus this year as my friend called and verified after he found UCSD was added to the presentation list on Mckinsey's recruitment website. Check the website yourself and you will see that many schools were added such as Wisconsin, ASU, U washington, etc

Hmm....well the listing states this:

TBD Final Round Interview

Considering that many consultants and Business Analyst are constantly travelling and busy, they can only make appearances at a few select schools where they feel they can get the MOST qualified students. With limited time and to a lesser extent, money, most firms can only visit a handful of schools. It's the same with Investment Banking as well.

However, since the goal is to get the best candidates regardless they accept applicants from these schools as well but do not visit it due to the fact that it may not be worth it for one good hire or none what so ever.

I believe it was a presentation only, interviews etc were not conducted.

They must have added UCSD this year then. My friend's who went there graduated in 2005 and no consulting firm except Triage (which isn't Management and strategy consulting) was the only firm to recruit from there when he was in school.

Anyways, back on topic. UCSD still doesn't command they same pull as top schools who have Bain, BCG, Monitor and the whole list of firms recruiting from there.

obviously, but there are students every year that are able to pull off ibanking from UCSD, sure some can pull of the likes of bain which is expanding its list just as fast as mckinsey. And yes they were added last year and i first found out it from a post on this board. Go figure.

I know UCSD students that did pull Ibanking just not bulge bracket. But assuming they are a top performer in their boutique, leaving for a higher firm is very likely.

Interestingly enough, it's funny that you mention McKinsey expanding their list. It used to be that the top half of HBS would get offers left and right. They also recruit at schools like UT Austin but only have one offer for 300 applicants. They soon started to realize that the 2nd ranked person at UT was a better than the 50% percentile HBS candidate they gave an offer too. So this is why they started expanding, in seek of top candidates although your still more likely to get an offer at a target school. One of my company's VP was an engagement manager at BCG for 5 years and remembers one colleague from HBS who wasn't particularly bright and was fired after a year.

San Diego has a number of respected investment banks that are small, obviously regional and run by unlikely candidates such as those graduating from csu san marcos, UCSD, SDSU, USC etc. I know a few that have gotten offers for UBS LA office and citi in NYC. West Coast schools will never have the prominence of east coast schools in respect to ibanking, sad as it is. Many just arent willing to relocate which does dampen the prospects of those that are willing. That is why i think asset management is vital to UCSD, it is available practically in any major metro, can be prestigious depending on firm and offers the big pay packages that many are looking and expecting with their MBA. You never have to leave your california living yet you can still pull a 120k to even over 200k research position

True, there are some very small IB in San Diego, I know a few in the Del Mar Heights area off the 56. Those that I have met were actually run by UCLA MBA's and one Duke Fuqua one. Typically, they worked at bulge bracket before and left for whatever reason. There offices are very small so I do not believe they have many analyst if any at all. The problem with these very small IB is that they do not get much "real deals" since 80% of those go to BB firms.
