Byrd Scholarship

how do they calculute GPA?

and plus, do you apply, or do you get nominated?

They don't average all of your classes. They take your X highest grades in certain subjects and then average them. It's all unweighted. For example, they take 12 highest grades in math, science, history, english. I don't know if it's 12, but it's something close to it. So my unweighted GPA is normally like 97.5 (if I count A+ as 99, not 100), but with the Byrd system, it was something like 99.989 (I guess they count A+ as 100).

It's top 5% of the senior class. In my school, there are 100 kids, so my guidance counselor took the top 5 kids and told us to apply for it. It took like 5 minutes, and it was on a bubble sheet (scantron thing).

is it possible for a school to just not do it? I've never heard of this before....

My school can only submit one application, so they only mention it to the top student--It goes by population somehow in WV, and my school is pretty small. It is different in each state, you'd have to do a search to find out how it works in your state.

No word from MN? I haven't heard.

In my school, the principal picked one student to apply (me). You think that because of MN, I would have a better chance? 4.00-1550? Hmm. I guess I will ifnd out soon enough...

I just spoke to the person in Virginia in charge of the Byrd program and he told me that the letters are in the mail to the students' homes. 166 new scholarships have been awarded statewide.

Word in from NY! I just received this scholarship! My stats are: 1580/800/800/800/800/760, 99.47 UW GPA.

Luckystar, where will you be attending in September?? Wow, great stats!

Hey luckystar, I hope there aren't many people with your stats applying in my area in NY (Upstate- hr. directly north from albany).

My stats are just approx 98 GPA with 1360 (710/650) SAT II 740/740/640

And Saintofme, I checked luckystar's prior posts. . . .(s)he is going to yale, and totally deserves it with those stats. Congrats!

Anyone hear anything in CA?

i got the Byrd scholarship in CA with a 4.0 unweighted and 1500; i called since I had already graduated and after giving them my social security number, I got the results.

I guess I should call, too.

Thanks for the compliments, you guys! StPlayrXtreme, don't worry I'm not from your area...I'm from the very competitive Long Island. Oh, and btw, I'm a she.

Man. **** me in the face. I just called and I didn't get it. I was a 3.96-1550. They're saying I didn't get it because of my GPA. Now, I have a question. How is GPA supposed to be calculated for CA? Is it top 12 academic grades? Because I'd manage a 4.0 then. My 3.96 was with all grades... Man, this sucks.

Did you contact the state agency? Can you give me the info on where to call? Thanks

Here is what the form says:

To calculate an applicant's GPA, use sophomore through senior grades, excluding Physical Education and Reserve Officer Training Corps. Convert any grades with extra weight for Honors and Advanced Placement classes to a 4.00 scale before calculating the GPA. Transcripts will not be accepted in lieu of an applicant's calculated GPA.

So, your guidance counselor, or whomever nominated you filled in your GPA based on their calculations.

Some of us filled it in ourselves. ~grumbles~ So I should be looking good with 4.0 and 1550 from MN? I will call and inform you guys when I find out. (Just need the correct contact info)

Where are the Texas winners posted? I have yet to hear back.

^ check with your school

Virginia resident here. We found out yesterday that our daughter is a Byrd scholarship winner.
