BYU Admissions/Scholarships freshmen of 2011

So the application doesn’t come out until Oct. 15… But does anyone know anything more than the website says about what’ll be on the application? The BYU Admissions page on Facebook released the two essay questions, but does anyone have any insider info on the scholarship essays? And if you’re going for the Monson do they care if you are national merit commended, AP Scholar with distinction, ELC (for californians), etc?

Bishop recommendation is all I can think of.

I don’t know about the Monson scholarship but everything you listed should help. Most importantly, of course, are GPA and Standardized test scores.

do you think a 34 ACT and 3.98 GPA are good enough?

Probably not good enough for the Monson but will get you a four year full tuition scholarship.

that’s unweighted, i have taken 6 AP’s and am taking 3 more this year–weighted its 4.51, that’s still not enough? Did all the Monson’s last year have 35’s and 36’s?

BYU only looks at unweighted GPA
2009 Stats: 824 with a 4.0 GPA, 8 with a 36 ACT and 67 with a 35 ACT 196 with a 34 ACT

Well you’re in for sure man. You can probably get a scholarship of some kind lol. I’m not sure if I can even get in with my 31 ACT and 3.56 gpa…

Man, you have a 31! The average is 28, isn’t it? And GPA avg is 3.8? But what do I know, the people in admissions say that everything is totally up in the air and they can’t make any definitive statements because the applicant pool could change so much.

Yep, those are the averages.

Runliketheweind: I am not clear on what the stats are that you quoted. I thought the Monson was only 25 female and 25 male applicants. Are your stats for the entire admitting class?

I also have another question. Last year for the Heritage scholarship there was a Matrix posted. Has anyone heard if they are using the same Matrix to determine the 4 year basic scholarship?

They also talked about counting the writing this year, but the application is only reflecting the reading and math. Does anyone know about the writing? Are they considering it?

@mancala: Runliketheweind’s stats are good for the whole admitted class last year. I checked the CES brochure, and that’s what they have in there.

I asked the scholarship office about the matrix, and the director told me that they can’t post a matrix because last year they posted one and ran out of money before they could give to everyone that qualified in their matrix. He said that they aren’t sure if last year was an anomaly or if it is a new trend so they are just going to wait until they get all the applications and THEN make the scholarship decisions based on how much money they have. He also said that the matrix should, not will, but should be a pretty good estimation of who will qualify though.

As for the writing portion, this year’s application does NOT require the writing portion. In the future, they very well might, but not if you are applying for Fall of 2011. A really really great resource for other questions like that is the [BYU Admissions | Facebook](BYU Admissions) website. It has almost every single Q&A you could think of.

Did you guys apply priority deadline?!? I’ve been staring at the same status for days!! i’m freaking out! Please tell me you guys have the same thing too!!!

I applied priority deadline. All I know is that it says:" Priority Deadline
You have met the priority deadline "
We don’t find out about Provo until February.

oh gotcha. I also applied to BYU-Idaho do you now hear from the until February as well?

@ BYUorBUST I’m a Monson scholar and my ACT was only 30. My SAT was higher, though but I think only converted to a 34. And my unweighted GPA was around 3.98, weighted at 4.13. Hope that helps! Good luck!

If it says “You have met the priority deadline” then you are fine and you can keep changing the application all you want until Feb. 1st and it will still be priority. They say you won’t find out till mid-to late february for Provo, but if you apply to BYU-I, they say that they should admit or deny you within 4 weeks of your application being submitted. I don’t know about BYU-H.

@tmrich: Are you a Monson Scholar from the freshman class of 2010?

@sjoseph11:
You should know by sometime in January at the latest. Probably earlier–My good friend with a 24 ACT and 3.3 GPA finished his second week of November and got accepted the first week of December. You should know pretty soon if you don’t already.

thanks! i’m just a little worried that I won’t get in. I don’t know what I’m going to do If i don’t my entire future plan is set on going there! haha still haven’t heard… it still says ‘priority deadline’ has anyone been accepted yet? My school was late in sending my transcripts and actually faxed them on the 1st so i’m not sure if it’s an advantage or not…

when the scholarship apps are due, and if my son can turn it in…gasp…dare I suggest…early. (he’s a procrastinator!) He has a 3.9 gpa and ACT of 35, hope that makes him competitive for the Monson.

I’m pretty sure that makes him extremely competitive. The scholarship apps are due Feb. 1…I really need to start on it myself haha
