1) i am 26
2) i graduated HS in 2002
3)i am independent/married
4) we (meaning my husband) made $60,000 last year
5)i have a 3.7 and am transfering to UCLA in the fall

i know $60,000 is above the cap of one but under the cap of another.

Cal Grant C is trade school; honestly Liz, you probably didn’t get it because both of your parents graduated college.

If you want an EXACT point add-up of yours, you can use the email on the Cal Grants website and they will literally email you down a point-by-point breakdown.

I received a Cal Grant last year, anyone else waiting still for a renewal? Also, does everyone’s say 2 years left of eligibility, because mine says 3?

a few pages ago… someone posted a link with the point breakdown. they had a 160+ and were cutoff. i had a 148 (single independent unemployed parents grad hs) and i didnt get a cal grant either.

Yeah but they will send you that breakdown but in red the points you received instead, so you know where you didn’t get the points you needed. Sometimes it helps people figure out something they need to change or where to improve in the case of the competitive grant. For the most part though, this grant is based on people who have the MOST need, not just significant need.

Most people don’t have to worry though if they are blue and gold eligible considering that pays the same as a Cal Grant.

I’m not really sure what you mean by things people can change. The only things you can do to change your point value is have kids, start making a lot less money, or raise your GPA. It’s not like you can change your parent’s history or change to being disadvantaged as a child.

yeah my husband busted his a s s last year and doubled our income – not because he made more money per day but because he worked more days (and two jobs in one day etc). kind of threw off financial aid.

how does the blue and gold plan work? isn’t the difference because with the cal grant you dont have to pay it back but with the blue and gold plan you do (because it comprised of mostly loans, right)?

Basically the same stats as me. $0 EFC and an independent student with no dependents. My friend who is an independent student with a 2.9 GPA and has a part-time job got CAL grant B option awarded. I called the Cal grant customer representative number and spoke with someone who gave me an extremely generic answer: “We only gave out awards to 11,000 students state-wide and there are other students that have, for example, a 4.0 GPA and 2 kids.”

Blue&Gold is a promise that your systemwide fees will be paid with a combination of grants and/or scholarships. To qualify, you must have submitted a Cal Grant application (FAFSA + GPA Verification) and have income under $80k. You do not have to pay it back.

Blue&Gold is not always “paid by the university.” It can count other outside aid as meeting its promise. When there is a perceived shortfall covering systemwide fees, then money directly from the UC system will kick in. Some UCs do refer to it as “Blue and Gold” in the FA package, but not all.

Is it just me or is the cal grant website slow or not even responding? I’m trying to do the “Submit Transfer Entitlement Certification” thing but the page never loads.

I’m so confused. How do you guys get to the “Transfer Entitlement Cal Grant Award” form??? When I log in all I see is this red message:

You will be provided with access to all screens when your FAFSA information has been received by the Commission. Your FAFSA information is downloaded from the federal processor. If you submitted a FAFSA but your information has not been received by the Commission, contact the federal processor. You may have incomplete information on your FAFSA that will need to be corrected before you will be provided access to all screens. You may contact the federal processor by calling 1-800-433-3243 or by clicking on the link below.

And all I can click is my application status. I was never asked what school I’m going to nor was it listed. Where is all this info at???

If you applied to UCs the year before, and the cal grant was awarded to you but you did nothing, you’re still going to be counted as a renewal this year so you’ll get yours in July (you’ll see this on the front page).

Neither Grimes nor I have been able to contact the calgrant hotline about it - there’s always a canned message that you can’t leave a message and nobody’s there to answer the phone :(

But it seems nobody knows what really happens.
