Cal Grant Question

Here is my situation, I applied for a Cal Grant A and received it to attend a Cal State this Fall. I ended up not going there because I was denied a parent plus loan. I am now going to attend a community college this spring however the college said my grant will not transfer because of their schools lower COA. I was just wondering how long my Cal Grant could stay in reserve, it was supposed to begin for Fall 2015, if I transfer to a CSU for Spring 2017 will it still be there for me? If so what might the process actually look like to redeem the grant in reserve?

Please read the cal grant handbook and website. Make sure you put the cal grant on reserve. Did you make an account on webgrants4students? That will allow you to manage it. That is the process along with sending in grades and filing fafsa. Cal grant can be held fo2years for sure and I think 3.

Yes I did it on web grants and it says cc reserve. But when you say send grades and file the fafsa do you mean I have to remain eligible throughout community college. Like let’s say my gpa somehow falls below a 3.0 for a single semester do I lose out on the grant. Likewise for financial aid, meaning if for one fafsa year I am not eligible for the cal grant during community college is my grant disqualified? I Appreciate the response.

I think it would be best to have a conversation with CSAC to lay out all of your options. You can contact them at 1888-224-7268.

You must qualify financially each year you are receiving the grant. It is based on your fafsa. There is a timing change coming to fafsa, so for school year 2016-17 your 2015 income will be used. Also for 2017-18 your 2015 income is used. Then for 2918-19 your 2016 income is used and that 'prior prior ’ year method is used after.

Meanwhile check if you qualify for BOG waiver at the CC.
