Out of state- Deferred

If it no longer says early decision: yes, on your cal poly profile, you have been deferred.

As one of the many deferred, what are the chances of being accepted RD? More likely, less likely? Any ideas?

I saw that the 4 yr graduation rate was surprisingly low at 37% (collegedata.com). Does anyone on this thread have first hand experience and know why this is? I have my theories but curious what is reality. If my D gets accepted (RD) we plan on visiting to find out directly from them what the deal is but, I am just trying to gather as much info at this stage. My D will be studying biology with interest in dentistry.

As an employer in Southern California, who has hired lots of engineers from Cal Poly Pomona, SDSU, CSF and CSLB, I believe that a big part of the low 4-graduation rate is the fact that students have a very hard time getting classes. This is especially true in the technical majors, which are very linear. A missed class early in your academic career impacts your ability to get future courses for years after. Very few of our engineers, even the very accomplished ones, have graduated from CPP in 4 years. All of the CSU’s are highly impacted, but CPP even more so. At one time CPP had the largest Civil Engineering program in the country.

I think if you could view the 5 year rates, they would be much higher.

Another issue at Cal Poly SLO is the difficulty in changing majors. A friend’s son attended Poly last year, but quit after he discovered that he didn’t like his major. It was too difficult to change, so he is attending CC this year, and will apply somewhere else in a year. He loved Poly, but couldn’t make it work.

An interesting article…

@Mumstheword2 Thank you. I am glad SLO is addressing this issue! Are there kids or parents with kids that have gone through the biology program (or other non-engineering program) in 4 yrs? Was it reasonably doable or did it require serious flow charting of class registration scenarios and summer school?

@SeattleMom1 my senior Business Admin major will easily finish in four years–did not have any serious problems getting classes. He had no AP units but took online GEs in summers through a California community college which easily transfer. I have a freshman engineering major who will take 1 or 2 GEs online each summer and will likely get done in 4 years if he can get his major sequence classes on time. They both had full time jobs over the summer and it was all doable.

@dadfan Good to hear. Do you know of any kids studying biology or looking to apply to dental or medical school? I know keeping a high GPA is crucial to getting into a dental/medical school. How is the support system for preprofessional students? Is there an advisor that handles this?

@SeattleMom1 There are pre-dental and pre-medical clubs associated with the Biology Dept… Here is the link:

Has a Facebook group already been created? If so, could I be added to it?

@NJDevilsFan2012 - There is a FB group called Cal Poly SLO Class of 2020. Search for that and request to be added to the group.

Two years ago my D was deferred and got in regular decision. So do not give up hope! She is so happy at Calpoly SLO!

Has anyone who was admitted early decision received an email or letter in the mail confirming this? We haven’t but the portal says my son was accepted.

@CalWolverine - My daughter was accepted ED and received an email on December 11th (portal changed on 12/10). However, she didn’t receive a letter in the mail. I believe students accepted ED needed to accept the offer by January 15th.

If memory serves me, SLO does not send out official acceptance letters unless you enroll.

For slo, the internet says RD comes out april 1st…do they start releasing them earlier than that like they do ED?

RD decisions for the past few years have started in Mid-February but can continue through April 1st. The website states you will be notified BY April 1.

Do they normally take till april 1 to finish?

Based on last year’s decision thread, by end of March, most were rejections or waitlist so they are usually done by April 1.
