Cal poly slo fall 2017 transfer thread

@schneybley: I have seen you post several times about picking CSUN over SLO and there is nothing wrong with your decision. Part of doing in well at any college is feeling like you belong/fit, so if CSUN is that place there is nothing wrong with attending and do not let other people convince you otherwise. SLO is a good school for the right students but if may not be for you.

Best of luck.

@schneybley I’m sorry to hear from what it sounds like people are judging you for your decision. :c It is not their shoes at the end of the day to pick–how the college “fits” you and you alone (geographically, culturally, and so on). There is nothing wrong with either decision c: Pick what you know makes you happy. You’ll be investing a lot of time, money, and effort where you choose to go after all.

@carolinag Congratulations!

I appealed for the heck of it earlier this month and still was rejected with a 4.0 and major classes planned to be completed by Spring 2017.

The stat for business transfers was 110 acceptances out of 1,589 applicants. It’s 6.92%. This info was in the reply letter I got yesterday (4/17). They got the letter I sent on April 6.

If any high schoolers are looking at this thread and want to be a business major at SLO, please apply as a high school student. They have very little amount of spots for transfers, and they probably take most of them from Cuesta and/or whatever other CC is in the area.

In general, this has been a giant F’ you to me, but hey, I’ll be somewhat happy wherever I go. crosses fingers for Irvine, but probably will be disappointed b/c they have limited spots for Bus Admin too I honestly have a hard time looking forward to going to SJSU as a Bay Area native. I’m sorry if I sound like an entitled jerk in this post, but the disappointment really sucks.

@TheLongRun I can’t blame you, a 6% acceptance rate is depressing. And while it is true they mostly prioritize locals from the area which makes sense, it makes me wonder why they would have a waitlist in the first place sometimes. As another Bay Area native, I really do hope things work out for you in the end. SJSU doesn’t fit everybody and honestly it doesn’t fit me too, but I wish you the best of luck. (:

Congrats to all who got in and condolences to those who did not. Tough year. You guys deserve props for slogging through.

My HS senior son is still waitlisted at UCR in Computer Science, so we are planning a future transfer pathway from the local CCC to SLO or UCSB (also, UCD, UCI, UCR, etc.). Clearly it is a narrow way in. We looked at the data.

He is applying to the Honors program at the CCC. For the Golden 4 and GE breadth, he would do English 1 year, American History 1 year, Econ, Communications, ideally all at Honors level. No plan for AS-T or IGETC, as it looks like that would take 3 years.

The articulation agreement on Assist.org shows full concordance with the Math sequence (Calculus 1.5 years, Diff Eq, Discrete Math) and the 1.5 year Physics sequence. The only CS course that articulates with SLO is the intro Java course. The 1 year C++ sequence and the Data Structures and Algorithms class articulate with UCSB and some other UCs, but not with SLO, UCSD, UCLA or UCB.

Does this mean that transfer to SLO is not just improbable, but impossible? Or if he is fortunate enough to transfer, that he would have to re-take a year or more of CS courses? @Gumbymom?

@PadreDeTres You should check out other community colleges in your area for the missing classes, and also look for online courses at every community college in the state. I believe one of the reasons I was accepted for 2017 as a transfer was I did just that and am currently taking a total of 6 classes at 5 different community colleges this semester, half of them online, one online at a college hundreds of miles away. It wasn’t easy figuring it all out, lining up schedules, and sending transcripts back and forth to meet prerequisites, but it was worth it.

@lankysequoia, thanks for that useful and actionable info. You are clearly a resourceful and energetic person. SLO did well to accept you.

We will certainly scour the surrounding area to find CS courses that articulate most fully. I suppose with enough lead time, the CS department at the CCC (a big one!) could be encouraged to revisit articulation agreements in time for it to make a difference.

We were blindsided by the insane competition for CS this year. My son is not completely sold on the idea of CCC and transfer, as he sees it as a sort of capitulation. That was the path I followed and it worked out great. I would not like to see him settle for a less-than-ideal situation (UC Colorado Springs, or accepting pre-major status at CSULB). If he gets in at UCR, he will go. Yet I think that he would do great with small classes in the CCC Honors program. And if he can transfer to a first-rate school, he will be good to go.

How long did it take to complete your GE and pre-major classes? What sort of GPA is expected? (Given that 4.0 is the upper bound–unlike HS!)

@PadreDeTres CS is incredibly competitive as a HS student and I should know since I applied 2 years ago and was rejected by 7 out of the 8 schools I applied to. I definitely regret settling for my local CSU and not going to a CC. CC is definitely the way to go in my opinion

Any female transfer students looking to find roommates on campus?? I’d really like to be able to request someone so I won’t be blindsided by a crazy roommate come August 16th. Message me!

anyone get off waitlist?

Can anybody pay for their on campus housing deposit? There is no option for it on their payment page. I saw an option last night but when I wanted to pay it this evening, it isn’t there anymore.

@jaleshaiker My status is still waitlisted. :c Based on looking at the waitlist thread here for Cal Poly, it doesn’t seem anyone else changed

@FishoMath Have you called? I applied for PCV and paid the deposit the day it opened to transfers.

hey guys! I just accepted my offer and it didnt ask for any money, i thought we were supposed to pay a deposit. Am i doing somethig wrong or did i press decline on accident. All it says is that you have responded to your accept/decline offer and does not say what i selected

@keeairooni021 There was no deposit for me. I receive financial aid though so maybe that played a difference in it.

@keeairooni021 you don’t have to pay a deposit for CSUs when you SIR

I’m not sure that’s true for all CSUs (I think at least SDSU and CPP require a deposit), but yes, SLO doesn’t require a deposit just to accept.

Thanks, that’s good to know!

CSUMB, Sonoma State, and (I think) Sac State require deposits when you push “Accept.”
