Caltech YESS 2008

^lol, i can't tell if you're being mean and sarcastic, or genuinely nice and sincere.

i don't really expect to get into yess, i hate physics...i'm more into bio and chem, lol.

i dunno what i'll do if i don't get in...maybe get a job or something. it just sucks to get rejected cuz all i think is this is what it will be like next year when we hear back from colleges.

i checked out the facebook group though...and pretty much everyone is either black or hispanic. so being asian, i pretty much don't stand any chance, boo.

anyone emailed yet?

Nevermind, ACCEPTED :D

^
That's not fair!
I didn't get anything yet!
Did they email you, XIEIX?

yep and here it is:

April 11, 2008

Dear Bob,

Congratulations! You have been selected for admission to the 2008 Caltech Young Engineering and Science Scholars (YESS) program. You were selected from a pool of many well-qualified students. We are excited to offer you admission and hope that you will decide to participate in the YESS program.

One of the best experiences at Caltech is the opportunity to conduct hands-on research with some of the top researchers in the world. By participating in YESS, you will get a head start to gaining research skills and exploring a career in science and engineering. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to meet personally with members of the Caltech Admissions staff who will answer your questions and assist you in strengthening your college applications.

Next week, you should receive a formal letter along with additional program details. Additionally you will receive a reply form where you can inform us if you intend on attending the program. We would appreciate if you let us know as soon as possible whether you plan on attending YESS. We hope you will decide to join us this summer in beautiful Southern California.

Best wishes and congratulations!

Sincerely,

P.S. I would appreciate it if you replied to this email so I know that you received it. Please feel free to ask me any questions!

:) I'm really happy I don't have to wait anymore. Now if only MIT just send those darn acceptance packages....

darn! i didn't get any email like that today...so i guess that probably means i'm rejected.....same here for MIT.

oh, gamapasa, i was being nice, not scarastic and mean...what i mean is that, if i got into caltech and u didn't, u could pose as me.jk. (i'm asian too).
XIEIX, what r ur stats? r u black, hispanic, or something?

ugh, too lazy to actually post stats so here's my stats profile: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profiles/member_stat_view.html?user_id=142401

and i'm biracial. black and mexican. did that help my chances you think?

ur stats doesn't seem to tell much esp for ur EC, but otherwise it looks good...
yeah, i think being black and mexican helps HUMONGOUS over an asian girl! though I don't know how an asian girl with disability help her chance.
just wondering, which summer programs r ur top choice?

hah rejected, i knew it.

it would have been really nice to have gotten in though...sigh. rejection hurts.

wildchartermage, thanks for the offer, lol. i hope you end up doing whatever you wanted to this summer!=)

but i guess 30 out of 400 doesn't really give anyone much of a chance to begin with.

rejected too....well, sorry gamapasa, u wouldn't be able to pose as me...I hope u end up doing whatever u want to do over the summer....looks like i'm going to UIowa to do reserach under a prof.

rejected.

not surprised, though, i'm not a minority at all.

asian-ness.

caltech probably rejected all asians regardless of their qualifications and status, etc.

on the site they do say they are target underrepresented minorities in the field of science & they list: African-americans, Hispanics, & Native-Americans.

yeah,so, still they reject a lot of asians, i'm pretty sure of that. they shouldn't focus on race only, they should look more to something else that makes a person minoritiy besides race.
