CALTECH YESS Summer Program 2010

Because there isn't one for the new program (well, not for this year), I've decided to create one.

I don't really know what to talk about, so I'll just say:
How'd applications go for all of you?!

Neither my child nor any of her friends who applied has heard a single word, not even a confirmation of receipt of application as promised. Emails are disregarded, phone calls unanswered. Doesn’t inspire confidence when they can’t stick to their own self-imposed schedule. Hundreds of kids worked hard on the application and have been left hanging. Not classy.

Check out the '09 thread… that’s what we’ve been using. I did get an email about my application having a missing component, but have not gotten any replies to whether or not the missing component was received.

@zinala: I submitted my app and recs way before the deadline and got a confirmation and everything right on time. The people who seem to be having trouble are those who submitted it really close to the deadline, after the system messed up and all.

We did not get any email confirming receipt. I called today and for the first time someone picked up and said email was sent. She did confirm that my son/daughter’s app was received. We never received an email (looked everywhere). I did ask what would happen in the event that someone was accepted, sent an email and did not respond…(assume email never came). To which the lady said they do contact via phone if no response to an acceptance email is received.

Did they happen to mention if they might send out acceptance emails today??? Wishful thinking I’m sure!

^ …what would make you think they would send them today?

My child’s app was submitted 5 days early. Even if it had been submitted on the last day, that’s no excuse. Glad she’s been accepted to another program.

I’m sorry to hear about the people who are having application issues. I’ve applied and looking forward to the decision on Monday. Have yet to plan summer based on the decision. Hoping for a desirable one =).

Hello,

My son did receive a “generic” confirmation e-mail from Eva Graham in Minority Student Education on 3/29. It was sent to my son’s e-mail address and this was the main content:

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the YESS program. This message is intended to
be an update on the status of your program application and is intended for the
program participant only. Our records indicate that your application is complete
and that we have received your transcripts, test scores and letters of
recommendation.

Final answers are supposed to be sent out tomorrow 4/12 but since they extended the application deadline to 3/3 I wouldn’t be very surprised if they also delayed the final e-mails. (I hope not, though!) Last year they received about 700 applications for 30 spots, and I’m guessing that they are just not staffed to handle the workload of interacting with people individually. Anyway, good luck everyone!! Make sure you check your spam folder tomorrow just in case…

Generic confirmation e-mail received on 3/29. Today is 4/12. Has anyone received acceptance yet? Still waiting…checking e-mail every so often - no news yet.

The confirmation email did not come until 8 pm (pacific time), so I am not expecting acceptance email until much later today, though the sooner the better :-)

Has anyone out there attended the University of Wisconsin Engineering Summer Program? If so, can you please give any first-hand insights into the program? Thanks.

Decisions will be sent out tomorrow by the end of the day… presumably 5pm PST

Thank you very much for the information. Did you call them to get this info?

Someone else in the other thread did. Here is a link to his post

Yes I did. I didn’t ask why, but I presume it is from the chaos of back when applications closed/opened/closed.

I think the acceptances were notified yesterday and the rejections will be notified today. That is my impression for the recent phone conversation and message on their web page. Which means we were declined.

^ Do you know anyone that got anything yesterday? Because everyone I talked to got nothing. I think that would be awful if they sent out only rejections a day later…

You are right. We got declined. Just received the e-mail. Well, may be next year.
