tinnova, the congratulatory letter did not specify what type of gpa, but my guess is it refers to weighted uncapped, since the capped max is about 4.333. My son had an uncapped over 4.6 and SAT in the mid-2300’s.

I assume the Regent’s awards are allocated by school/major to some extent? So an engineering major, for example, might be more competitive in terms of gpa/sat??

Thanks @yoamgatos for the detail.
GPA Weighted 4.96 (Capped UC: 4.19) and SAT 2330 and applied to CS major got no regents or CHP invite. Friends from same schools with lower gpa/test scores (not same major) got regent’s invite. School’s Guidance Counsellor is surprised and asked us to talk to admissions office - but over the phone they stick to generic “holistic” statements and unwilling to discuss specifics. Seems there is some mystery or mistake.

@Ijmom It may be because of many honors semesters…
For sophomore and junior years, 22 honors semester were there, but capped gives credit for only 8.

UC GPA Capped = (4a+3b+2c+d+min(8,H))/(a+b+c+d)
a=29 and b=2 and H=22 gives Capped GPA of 4.19

I received CHP with a 4.04 UC GPA and a 2020 SAT. I felt like my EC’s and essays were pivotal in me getting this. UCI’s process really is holistic after all. lol

I have an uncapped 4.325 GPA and capped 4.33 GPA. I have substancial EC’s and essays were above average. I got a 33 ACT, but didn’t get the regents invite nor the CHP. Maybe it’s coming in waves because my friend got the invite this Friday? Or maybe they’re sending this honors invite by major. I declared my major as business management. But I was upset when I didn’t get anything .___.~

Yes, I too suspected that scores/cutoff for regents invite may be dependent on intended major. But some other examples disproved that theory - esp. for UCB. Universities maintain a top x% kind of verbiage. Whether it is per-college or per-major is not clear.

Yes, per-major quotas (1% from each major rather than 1% across all applicant pool) is reasonable to expect and that would explain (or minimize the surprise). Say for a class of 100 for an extremely competitive major, they get to pick 1 or 2 - and that can be a toss up.

In fact, for a competitive major, the top 10 may not even show up given the large mass of safety pool applicants - hope, in such a case these pre-admission awards go down to actual matriculates for that major.

@LNmomof2 - Congrats. I’m wondering now may be we should applied as Undeclared major (less competitive as per-major quotas comment from tinnova). Once we got the foot in the door, may be it’s easier to change major than apply for a very competitive one at the beginning. Just don’t know how hard/easy it is to change major once you’re in.

Per advice from guidance counselor, called the admissions office and the lady maintained CHP and regents invites are independent of the intended major. These invites are dependent on numbers (GPA and test scores), but a “holistic” assessment.

I got it today in the mail… I got accepted into the Nursing program 3 days ago, but since I didn’t get the letter in the mail today I had just assumed that I randomly got an early acceptance. I had no idea that I got into the CHP, but still it feels great!

My D didn’t get CHP or UCI regents invite but got UCLA Regents and UCLA/UCB Alumni scholarship invites. 4.0 UW, 4.31 W Capped, 4.89 W Uncapped 2200 SAT, 34 ACT.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change your major once admitted to the CHP? Will I get kicked out of the honors program if I decided to switch majors?

@ADY360 I got into CHP and when I looked at my portal, it said that I had been admitted to UCI. My letter said this: “Congratulations! You have been selected to become a member of the Campuswide Honors Program,” which clearly signified to me that I am already in and that I do not need to further apply.
