Can I cancel my housing for Spring semester?

Hi,

I am currently in the farthermost dorm in North campus and it takes me 30 mins to get to the engineering quad so it's just not convenient. So I was thinking of getting my own apt in College town but I went to housing office to see if I could cancel and they told me that they only release contracts if you are going study abroad or leaving Cornell, which is not my case.

Has anyone succeeded in cancelling for the second semester? If so, how? I need to find the perfect excuse to move. Thanks.

I’m fairly positive that all freshmen have to live on North. You probably will have to wait until next year.

you will have to strongly prove to them that you need to be released from your contract for a very good reason other than convenience. your contract is for a full year. we were able to get my son released but he was a sophomore transfer student in shelton court and wanted to move into a fraternity house. the national fraternity helped to get him out of the contract. it was not an easy process and were told that this is very rarely done. we were charged $500 to be released.

What Ranza said

Hey all, @maxsdad‌ @mhmm @Ranza123‌

I am actually a transfer student in CE. This is not working out for me because of the immature people around me and that’s fairly my reason. Do you know of any dorm that has private bathrooms and doesn’t not require dining?

Thanks for your responses. @maxsdad @mhmm @‌ranza123

I still don’t think they will cancel housing for you. You can try talking to them again but it seems like they made themselves pretty clear.

if you move to Shelton Court or Cascadilla, you DO NOT have to be on a meal plan. You can try to see if there are any singles available for next semester or find an empty bed that someone may be going abroad for the spring. This housing would still be part of your contract but would relieve you of being on a meal plan. Do not think there are any private bathrooms in either building but you can check with housing. Collegetown housing is typically upperclassmen so they may be more mature then North Campus. it is also fairly easy to get to the engineering quad from college town

You might do better asking for a room transfer – it sounds like you have some pretty good reasons besides convenience. Even West Campus would be better than North – or Collegetown if you can get it.
