When I did my application, I had applied to be a pre-journalism major. Now, I am considering into majoring in Advertising but I was wondering if I can change my major at orientation. A friend that goes there says that I should be able to because I changing my major among the same college. If I can change my major at orientation, is it a complicated process?

Hey kay!

You can change majors after the 1st semester you complete at UT Austin. That is what an adviser told me

Cheers

Can you change schools at orientation?

I don’t think so. They pre-arrange all of your advising meetings with the major you had already selected in mind. Basically, what you do at orientation is dependent on the major you had already selected. You would have to change majors somehow before registering for orientation.

If nothing else, just talk to someone while you’re there.

Just take the basic courses needed for your intended major during your first semester and then you should be able to easily go into that major once the prereqs for it are done.

Keep in constant contact with an advisor in both your original and future majors.

Thank you (:

Now y’all have me wondering…
I accidently put BA Studio Art as my major instead of BFA Studio Art. I contacted Shane Sullivan, the dept. head, in late January and asked him if I could still switch it. He said that I could at orientation.
So is he right, or is he wrong?? I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.

I’m sorry. I was thinking about changing majors in a DIFFERENT college because that’s what I’m going to do. I am a liberal arts student wanting to add on a natural sciences major, so I will have to do prereqs before officially declaring the major.

I didn’t think about people who are switching their majors within the same college. If that’s the case I don’t think it’s a problem at all. For Liberal Arts for example, you can change your major online multiple times per year, no adviser necessary.

It depends on what you are wanting to change your major to and what college…My D went to orientation as an educaiton major, but wanted to change to PR in the Comm school. They went ahead and changed her to General Studies at orientation so that she would have an advisor…She then had to appy to the Comm school during Fall semester…she found out she got into the Comm school at Christmas break.

Kaylune,
Call the office of Student Affairs in Communications
[The Office of Student Affairs Staff | College of Communication](http://communication.utexas.edu/students/office-student-affairs-staff)
If they put you off, stay and ask the presenters of your Communications meeting in the “College Meetings” section. If a parent is going, have them ask at their college meeting also.

My d changed her major in Comm. just before Orientation. She was visiting the school, called an Assoc. dean, said she would like to change from undeclared comm. major to RTF. After a nice conversation, the Dean called an advisor in, and changed her into RTF. This might not be common, but it can happen.

Good Luck
