URM with those stats is guaranteed to Yale…BU knew he’d get into good schools. They didn’t waste their time offering acceptance to some one who they knew wouldn’t attend.

… my best piece of advice (which many people might disagree with) is to apply to lots of schools as long as you’re willing to take the hit financially. i almost did not even apply to duke since people from my area (northern nj) supposedly NEVER get in, so the general sentiment was… why bother? now i’m going there and i’m really happy with that. you never know which of the top schools will see something in you that others might miss. good luck everyone!

I’m Jewish, which is clearly an ORM at most ivy leagues and technically not even a (visible) minority. I didn’t disclose it on my applciation, but it was obvious from my ECs and school etc.

Accepted: Syracuse, Towson University, University of Cincinnati ( partial scholarship and attending), RIT with partial scholarship,
Waitlist> accepted> Carnegie Mellon School of Design ( but no scholarship)
Waitlist but didn’t clear> RISD
3.5 unweighted/ 4.0 weighted. She was in a humanities magnet program. Thus, she took almost all honors/AP/college courses. Her class rank was mediocre at around top 35%.
SATs: 580CR, 640 Math, 600 Writing for a total of 1820
She had a strong portfolio and some strong humanities ECs that indicate passion such as:
Attended Syracuse pre-college program in art with 3.5 average GPA for summer

Been over 4 years, overall things haven’t changed that much, I forget a lot of his specifics.
Underachiever for several reasons: somewhat lazy, thought school had too much wasted time, weighting for honors and APs were minimal at his hs at the time.

GPA unweighted 3.5 maybe a little less, with class rank just within 20-ile% in class of 300, not good but given the effort he put into HS (virtually none) it wasn’t bad. AP Computer Science and AP Stats (5 and 4) at time of application, then 4 APs senior year. Given rank he applied to a large # of “safeties”, not knowing if they were really safeties or not.
EC’s: probably average for cc.
Recs: truly outstanding by teachers who understood him.

EC’s: few - academic bowl team junior varsity captain, but the rigor of my high school and the fact that we weren’t allowed to have jobs or EC’s usually gave me a good excuse.

Essays: Good, I’m a good writer, I don’t remember what they were on.
I applied to these three schools because there are only a few great 5-year architecture schools (two, IIT and CMU, actually) that don’t require a portfolio, so that limited my pool considerably. OSU was my safety.
The only reason I got to go to IIT was participation in its Camras Scholarship program, fall session (it’s a lot easier to get a scholarship in the fall than the spring.) IIT actually called me at my then-dorm to see if I was interested in interviewing even though I hadn’t applied for it, was planning to in the spring. The admissions department certainly came through for me.
CMU gave me $14k/year out of $40k. Obviously impossible.
IIT gave me a 3/4-tuition scholarship, and then need-based to fill it out. I had a couple of private scholarships also.
OSU gave me a full ride and then some (obviously).
