Can more graduated seniors do "actual results" threads?

Accepted to Harvard (SCEA) and Wellesley (EE)

[]Essays: I wrote my Common App essay on why I like taking AP exams (nerdy, I know) – the Harvard admissions officer wrote me a letter and said she loved the uniqueness of my essay, so maybe that’s what got me in…
[]Teacher Recommendations: I didn’t read them, but they were from two teachers who really liked me; one rec probably explained how I stood out in class as almost the sole contributor, and the other probably showed how I overcame my struggle to do well and ended up being a dedicated learner and a leader in class.
[]Counselor Rec: I don’t know him too well, but we get along splendidly, and I know he thinks highly of me.

General Comments:

  • [] Strengths: Being consistent in my ECs. Essays - showing voice. About 3 excellent and personal recommendations.
[] Weaknesses: SATs for sure. GPA. Two “paste and copy” recommendations - should’ve left them out. No other ECs than what I have time for.

I am waiting on a decision from Spelman but unless they present a super awesome package, and perhaps even if so, I’ll be attending MoHo in the fall!

Hook: Recruited athlete at Pomona, Carleton, and Bowdoin

Strengths: Math, Spanish, Extracurriculars (Few, but I really enjoyed them. I put a lot of work into them, and was very successful.) I like learning.

Weaknesses: I didn’t take honors option classes in 9th/10th grade, nor did I take AP Lang. SAT’s are a little low for some of the schools I applied to.

Advice: Do what you want to do in high school. If you are intrinsically motivated, intellectually curios, and learn for the sake of learning, you will do fine when it comes to college admissions. Being genuine is truly important. Both your teachers and college admissions officers will be able to tell. I also honestly believe that your essays and your teacher recommendations will be the difference makers. Good luck to all those who are beginning this process and those who are applying next fall!

Summer Activities: Two week summer engineering program at UMass

Essays: Based off of my results, I’m gonna go ahead and say the admissions committees didn’t like my writing. In general I think my essays were bland and unoriginal. It’s not that I didn’t spend a lot of time on them or that I’m a horrible writer, and I did get a lot of help from family, teachers, friends (here’s your shoutout miguel  ) etc., I just really hated college essays, and they hated me too. Overall, too generic.

Reflection
Strengths: I guess balanced app…?
Weaknesses: Nothing on my app is really standout good, most things kinda sub-par for the schools I applied to
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The weaknesses, school cap, I’m generic

General Comments: I’m not unhappy with where I’m gonna end up going to school, especially since I’ll probably go to grad school, so where I go undergrad doesn’t matter as much, but it’s not where I saw myself ending up when I first started the college process. I do wish I had ED’d to an ivy, but I wasn’t able to because of money/preparedness. I wasn’t surprised by any individual rejection, but reflecting on my app, I am a little surprised that I didn’t get into at least one top tier school. I think I probably should’ve planned my apps better in terms of just being prepared and getting things done early, and school selection (maybe some more schools that were easier to get into but more prestigious than where I got accepted, applying to different schools to avoid school cap). It is what it is I guess. Congrats to everyone’s successes, and best of luck to those still in the college process reading this. Don’t stress out about it too much, if you’re on this website, you’re probably someone who really cares about their future and is a hard worker, and you’ll end up fine wherever you go.

Reflection
Strengths: SAT scores, recommendations, course rigor and possibly the interview at Duke
Weaknesses: Low UW GPA, though that still does put me high in my class at an elite school
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I predicted each decision right the day it came out except for one- ED at Duke. I am still a little confused by that one. I was a reasonably qualified double legacy and did not even get a deferral early decision (when nearly half of applicants were at least deferred). What I think happened was that our valedictorian also applied ED to Duke, giving them that comparison (he also had family connections there). I will stay on the Vanderbilt wait list and hope that it works out.

General Comments:
I applied to a ton of safety schools, but did not really get anything that wasn’t safe (Bucknell and Richmond were perhaps low matches or matches). What I regret doing is not applying EDII to Vanderbilt after the Duke rejection, as I think I would have gotten in. But, I was not ready to do so at the time, and we will see what happens with the wait list. Despite the fact that my family is rich, I am interested in merit aid, so I am considering the full scholarships for NMF to Alabama and Kentucky, in addition to Tulane, Richmond, and Miami.

Essays (subject and responses): Common app essay was about my experience with vulnerability in music (I know, it sounds super cheesy just based on that, but my college counselor (a former Duke admissions officer) said that it was the best essay he had read in 5 years. I loved it.
Supplements: I spent a lot of time on all of them, and really liked them, so I think that helped me.
Teacher Recs: Really awesome. I had a really good relationship with the teachers who wrote them, and performed very well in their classes- plus, I thought they were very articulate. (My recommendation letters were mentioned in my Amherst letter, actually).
Counselor Rec: I have no idea, but I love my counselor, and we have a good relationship.

Can’t believe that it’s finally time for me to post one of these!
This probably isn’t the most interesting one here, but I’ll give it a shot.

Accepted: University of North Carolina- Wilmington, University of North Carolina- Charlotte, Eckerd College, and University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill (Early Action)
Waitlisted: none
Rejected: none

Objective:

SAT 1: didn’t submit
ACT (breakdown): 28 composite, 35 English, 34 Reading, 23 Science, 20 math

SAT 2: didn’t take
GPA (out of 4.0): 3.82 UW, 4.55 W.
Rank: 13/150
AP: My school only offers 4 AP classes, but I have US History (5), Human Geography (currently in progress), US Gov and Poli (currently in progress)
Senior Year Course Load: English IV Honors, Civics Honors, Spanish III Honors, World Civilizations (dual-enrollment), College Algebra (dual enrollment), AP Gov, AP Human Geo, General Biology (dual-enrollment)

Major Awards: None

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: Student Government (Student Body Pres this year, several other offices over the years), DECA (President this year, several other offices), theatre, track, National Honor Society
Job/Work Experience: I worked for Duke University this summer as a paid intern
Essays: I thought they were great. They were really personal and original.
Recommendations: An amazing one from my English teacher, and a meh one from my math teacher.
Counselor rec: Probably very good, she loves me.

Other:
State: North Carolina
School Type: small public
Gender: female
Income bracket: $80,000
Hooks: as far as UNC goes, I’m from an underrepresented NC county. I’m also legacy but have been told that it doesn’t matter as far as instate admissions goes.

Reflection:
Strengths: essays, english/reading scores, AP score, extracurriculars

Weaknesses: poor grades and scores in math, low score in science, class rank isn’t the best
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was almost 100% sure that I would get into every school I applied to except for UNC. Even my parents thought I wouldn’t get in, and most on CC said it was a long shot. This process definitely confirmed for me the fact that UNC admissions truly are holistic. Yes, I had a 20 on the math portion of the ACT, but I also had amazing essays and pretty good extracurriculars.

General Comments:
Statistics, CC, and even my peers all lead me to believe that I had no chance at getting into my dream school. I know that I didn’t apply to any super competitive schools compared to the rest of y’all, but I still wanted to post for anyone who might be in a similar situation and hoping to get into UNC or a school like it. Just show passion, and work as hard as YOU can. Don’t compare yourself to others that get into the school, people in your class, or the people on CC. I’m so beyond blessed to be going to Carolina next year, and wouldn’t change anything!

Reflection

  • Strengths: I’m pretty sure my recommendations got me in, there were “best student in career” comments in both of them and my supplemental from the MITES program also said he had never seen a student progress so fast. I also think my essay gave them context as to how to consider my application. Coming from a severely underprivileged home could only help as well.
  • Weaknesses: I didn’t have many activities and extracurricular, but I guess my circumstance made up for that.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Relatively strong academic background and really showing my passion for mathematics and computer science through my extra self-study and through my recommendations.

General Comments:
Ultimately I kinda regret not applying to Princeton EA since it became my first choice after a visit and I might’ve actually gotten in but oh well, definitely looking forward to attending uChicago (meet 100% of demonstrated need  which for me is like full tuition…). Top school admissions is definitely like a lottery since I know others more qualified than me who got wailisted/rejected from uchicago and the like.

Applied: Bucknell, University of Delaware, Hofstra (Honors College), Lafayette, Lehigh, College of NJ, Penn State Main, Syracuse, and Villanova
I got accepted to all of them except for the Honors college at Delaware. Also I didn’t apply to the penn state honors college. I’ll likely attend Lehigh but I’m not certain yet.

Comments: I’m quite pleased with myself considering I was told by a few on and off this site that my SAT scores would probably be too low for Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, and Villanova.

Hi. I, like most people on this thread, always wanted to fill this out. Considering it’s no longer a chance thread, excuse me if I might be a bit over-thorough; especially considering that, other than school-specific results threads, I’ll have no other need to post these any more. It’s really great to be done!

General Comments:

Rejected from my reaches, accepted to my matches and safeties, waitlisted at my high matches/low reaches. It seems like these are fairly reasonable results if I were to try to look at my application objectively. I obviously would have preferred the ED acceptance to Cornell and be done with it, but I’m happy I got my foot in the door enough to be able to go for my sophomore year (if I were to choose to go that route). I visited Boston a year ago to look at schools and I really loved BC. Considering my final decision (Georgetown) was today, I was able to narrow it down to BC and UVA. However, the guarantee of being admitted to the business school for my freshman year (as opposed to the two-year program at UVA) was too good to pass up. BC for me. Go Eagles!

Here’s for the normal kids like me lmfaooo.
