Question: Should people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their communities or the nation in general?
Individual’s should take a higher degree of responsibility for solving problems that affect their community as this will lead to less problems across the nation as a whole. Although some proponents of increased government intervention argue that individuals should have very little responsibility in fixing the nation’s issues, these critics are too dogmatic in their provincial ideology. A group effort of individual’s within separate communities in fixing issues will aid the welfare of an entire nation. Two archetypes that examine how this idea is true are neighbourhood watch groups and Clean Up Australia Day.
Individual’s should take more responsibility for solving issues that affect their community. THis is demonstrated by the increasing prominence of neighbourhood watch programs around the world. A neighbourhood watch is generally when a neighbourhood community organise themselves to keep guard and observe their community, especially at night to deter and catch anyone committing illegal activity such as vandalism or burglary. These groups are not government organised and thus promote self-reliance of communities and reduce the issue of crime. Thus, neighbourhood watch programs demonstrates the success of people taking increased responsibility to solve issues.
In addition, the Clean Up Australia program portrays the way in which increased responsibility of people in their communities aids the entire nation. Clean Up Australia is a weekend where communities organise to pick up and collect rubbish from their environment and this collectively reduces physical pollution across Australia. Hence, this displays self sufficiency and responsibility for environmental issues.
Thus, it is indeed evident that increased responsibility by individual’s in their communities aids the prosperity of an entire nation as a collective effort of communities can do more good than a single effort of a government. This is demonstrated by both neighbourhood watch programs and Clean Up Australia, whereby people aimed to reduce problems in their communities which led to a reduction in issues across the nation without government help. By doing so a nation demonstrates self-reliance of it’s people and independence.
