Can you do hw/study while listening to music?

it's so weird but i can listen to music only while doing math but can't if it involves reading.

not weird, I'm exactly like that and I know others who feel the same way. I think it depends on how well you can tune out the lyrics, because listening to lyrics will require similar parts of the brain to reading, whereas writing out equations and doing math dont.

I'm exactly the same. I can only do math hw.

I can also do physics and chemistry homework :). But not when I'm trying to learn something new.

I can do math and science problems, as well as write essays, while listening to music. I generally can't read with music, unless I'm skimming.

I can do almost anything while listening to music.
I almost always read while listening to something on my mp3 player.

The only thing I can't do while listening to music is drive. I can't concentrate at all.

In general, multitasking (which includes paying attention to lyrics) is equivalent to a decrease of 10 IQ points while performing a given task. So listening to music doesn't affect my concentration perceptibly while doing homework, but it probably has a detrimental effect upon its quality.

I can do it, I shouldn't, though (can't focus). Math is easy because it's just swiftly apply formulas, move on, etc. =P

whoa, platts, you can read while listening to music but you can't drive? that's interesting.

Yes, but not very efficiently.

Haha, it's weird- if I'm doing anything constructive I can't listen to music with english words- it has to be other or else I end up getting distracted. But usually if I'm doing something serious like studying for a big test, I get fed up with the music and just work until its done. :]

I don't do my hw most of the time, but when I do I'm always doing it with my iPod on. Any subject; it doesn't matter, really.

I also score better, albeit somewhere trivial (5% ish), on tests when I have my iPod on. I've tried it numerous times and the discrepancy tends to be, for the most part, alarmingly consistent.

^ 0_0, ur teachers let you listen to your ipod when ur taking a test? cooool.

i can't listen to an english song while reading and english passage.
but i can listen to classical or japanese music yeah.
classical really helps me study.

I'm exactly the same. I can only do math hw.

me too!! 10char

I also find it difficult to read when listening to music. Of course, I find it difficult to read Jane Eyre without music anyway.

Like everyone else said, I can only do it with math. If I'm listening to non-lyrical music, I can occasionally do it with other subjects. NEVER with reading.

To me, music makes math bearable. I'm very easily distracted while reading, so I can't read and listen.
