Cancelled Classes and Change of PreReqs

Hi guys, so I've been really stressing out these past few weeks over two classes that I won't be able to take in Spring 2014 but put down on my transfer application. Finals are finally over and done with so I figured I'd try to ask for advice on how I should proceed.

Ok, so I applied for six different UC schools for computer science and TAGed UCI for CS. Two months into fall semester I decided to drop Calc II and it turns out this was a huge mistake, I should have dropped my computer science class instead, but there's nothing I can do about that now. The first calc based physics class at my CC only requires Calc I, and the next physics class in the series USED to only need the first physics class in the series, but they decided to change that for the first time. Now for the second physics class I need the first physics class in the series AND Calc II, but of course, I can't get in because I dropped Calc II when I realized I took too many units and tried to keep a high GPA in physics and CS.

To top it all off, after dropping Calc II to get better grades in my CS, physics and GE classes, I was just informed on the day of my CS final this week that the next CS class in the series has been cancelled and will not be available in Spring 2014 at my CC.

I guess what I'm really bummed about is that I might have to wait a WHOLE year until I have a shot at transferring. In my transfer application I put down that I would take the highest level CS class at my CC and electromagnetic physics, but that's not gonna happen. So how can I explain my situation to them? If I had the chance to I would take those classes without hesitation. I don't want the schools I'm applying to thinking that I led them on when I applied in November.

Also, for my UCI tag does it matter that I won't be able to take these classes? The assist report says that I only need one year of calculus and one year of computer science classes, which I will definitely have when spring semester is over, but keep in mind I told them I would be taking a CS and Physics class in the spring.

Ughh, I really think that this just ruined my chances for admission at everywhere I applied, except for maybe UCI. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks for your time.

Physics: Talk to the professor. Figure out who’s teaching it, stop by their office/email, and figure out exactly how much calc 2 will be required. Is it something you know or could teach yourself easily? Would taking calc 2 at the same time as physics be okay? Go ask those sorts of questions, explain your situation, and if calc 2 isn’t vital maybe the professor can let you into the class.

CS: Can you find another CC nearby which offers the class? Maybe you could still take it.

If you can’t find a way to get in, don’t give up hope… especially if you’ve still met the requirements. Never know what’ll happen. But be sure to update your app accordingly in January, and maybe throw in an explanation about what happened (class canceled, etc).

Good luck!

Some other CCs near Citrus College have more courses for UCI CS:

In general, you should expect a physics course that includes E&M to require a co-requisite of calculus 3 (multivariable calculus).
