"I guess I should introduce myself. I am the head of the Careers Advisory Board... I wanted to be a doctor. But there we are. Head of the Careers Advisory Board... or a sculptor. An artist. But no. I'm stuck as the head of this STUPID board..."

If I can't land a job in the gov't, probably a HS teacher or college professor.. and write during my ample vacation time. Speaking of which:
What would you guys consider a reasonable/comfortable income? About $50,000?

I think he means 50k a year. I'd say thats enough to live on if your single with no family. I'd just buy a boat and live on that. Yeah that's what I'm going to do, buy a boat...

50 grand a year... hm, I'd say depending on your lifestyle. You've got some room to spend, but not a lot to save (especially at the rate of this economy).

You may have ample vacation time, but I don't think you'll have an ample vacation, if you're catching my drift.

How can I be talking, if I try to "follow my dreams," I'll probably be dirt poor and living with 4 other roommates. One of them a tranny named Loretta that likes to sing Donna Summer in the shower while I'm trying to write the "next big thing."

The wife and I have been comfortable on 20-25k. But I'd say 50k is just about right if you're talking about renting/owning a house in a decent neighborhood...going out every week or two...not going crazy with electronics and cars...etc.

Speaking from experience, 50k would give you plenty of money for vacations, retirement, etc. You just have to be smart with your money.

I am currently majoring in Political Science. After attending a top 6 law school, I want to go to law school to practice law (Hopefully Harvard, Yale, Stanford, NYU, Chicago, or Columbia).

I want to be an accountant... I'm gonna try to get my masters in accounting at USC but first I'm gonna get my bachelors in Womens studies and minor in Accounting at UCLA thats if I get in.. crossing fingers

i started my community college very ambitious... as a mechanical engineer major (it only seemed like a good idea in my mind) then i started going through science classes. when i got to my second semester of chemistry i thought that i hated being a frickin lab rat. and this lab report is insanely tedious and i hate it! but i loved calculus i guess i like the logic in it. then i decided to be a philosophy major but i couldnt find anything good to do with it except going to law school or political science which isnt the most appealing thing to me.

then i became a math tutor at a local high school and immediately loved it. i realized i cant have a job thats too impersonal and decided to major in psychology because its somewhat philosophical and very interesting. im thinking about becoming a social worker, high school teacher, or getting my doctorates and becoming a clinical psychologist or maybe all of the above :). hopefully by retiring age i will be an expert pianist and charge people 60$ a month for 4 hours of piano lessons and working at home yea!

KGCotU... 20-25k a year? do you both live in CA? If you do, then I have to give you two props because as a married couple that seems difficult in this state. Even 50k in this state is difficult if you are not single, add a family and its almost impossible to save. I made almost that amount working and being a student, but I want to be able to save and buy a home so for me it's sports & entertainment attorney. good luck to everyone.

theres 4 of us in my family. my dad is the only one that works and makes about 35k a year. we live in san diego but hes also in the military (navy) so we get tons of great benefits and we live quiet comfortably. so if everything goes wrong... theres always the military... oh and just fyi.
college + military = officer = $$$ + benefits great retirement money too

not advocating the military though because obviously i dont want to join.

I would say 25k would be stretching it in some places in California. We were in San Diego for a while; I had a half hour drive to work and somehow that was "normal." Friends lived 40 minutes away? No big deal. That and rent will eat up money.

We lived on about 15k net though in Oregon. Had no cell phone, didn't eat meat, cooked our own food, IKEA furniture, a good time was renting a movie and watching it with a friend, board games, D&D. So, it's possible if your tastes are cheap. (;

@bsally: I think that's net pay. Your dad has gotta be taking in around $1600+/mo housing and food allowance.

Yeah, 25k is definitely not doable where I plan on living.. but it's good to know that reasonable lifestyle changes can help. It's ridiculous how much home mortgage can eat up your income.. and kids. Heard somewhere on the news that it costs several hundred thousand dollars to raise one kid. (sorry mom and dad)
