Carnegie Mellon RD discussion thread 2016

Alright, thanks BlizzBlazer!

@Noobie

I know. I wasn’t trying to knock Tepper. I actually would like to go, but being waitlisted and seeing the amount of people waitlisted that get in, I probably won’t bother. I’m still waiting to hear back from Wharton. Hopefully, being waitlisted at Tepper is not some sort of benchmark.

Don’t worry about what being waitlisted means for other colleges’ decisions. Out of the people I know who applied to CMU, my friend who got into MIT was waitlisted for both SCS and MCS (math). Even if you get waitlisted, you probably still have a decent chance at other colleges.

My son was accepted to MCS (mathematics) and waitlisted for SCS. Really need to see the financial aid package before he starts his celebratory dance. Does anyone know–does CMU rely heavily on student loans to help fund financial need or are there fairly generous grant awards?

I live in CT. Does anyone know when I can be expecting my fat pack in the mail? I’ve been stalking the mailman every day waiting for it. I kind of can’t believe I was accepted until I get it in the mail for whatever reason, lol.

My son got his “Fat Pack” in the mail today (we live in Maine). It was sent “priority” but it looked like it had been through a war. Ripped down 75% of one side. Contents holding on for dear life!
I suspect they went though some sort of sorting catastrophe and that’s why they are so late?
Anyway, although I haven’t opened it, I can peak at what’s in there, and it indeed is a “fat pack” Can’t wait to look through everything with my S.

@ hsmom2dncrs:

We are also waiting to see financial aid package before we decide.

Had a long discussion with son about the same last night. He had understood through this whole process that aide would need to be a consideration, but emotions are taking over the usual very practical boy’s head. He has so many other opportunities with great merit packages, and we will help with every cent we can, but we hate to see him saddled with so much debt.

I’ve heard FA grants are few at CMU, but we can hope
.
Did you do the estimator on line? I’d like to know how close that comes to the real package.

Got the FAT packet today too (NY).

MomforAll, check and see if your son got a merit package from a peer institution of Carnegie mellon; they have been known to match offers or parts of offers, from other schools

yeah, I talked with FA today and they said although they confirmed hismerit package is from a peer school, it is unlikely they will be able to give us even half of what RPI offered, AID is very tight this year.

“unlikely they will be able to give us even half of what RPI offered, AID is very tight this year”

And wouldn’t you have thought that with all those hundreds of millions of dollars donated to CMU that aid would loosen up a bit?

No fat packet in the Rochester, NY suburbs as of today’s delivery. D accepted to MCS. Trying to find details of April visit days so we can schedule trip during April break to help with decision. Admissions says all the info is in the fat packet.

Fat Letter down here in Long Island, NY as of this morning.

If you need the information in the fat letter, most of it (including April visits) is on [this website](http://www.cmu.edu/ntia/).

(I got it here in our California suburbs today.)

Thanks for the link, Energize. Very helpful.

@MomForAll - Never did the estimator for Carnegie Mellon, so I’m not certain what to expect from them. Have had some generous offers from other schools - and still hoping to hear from a few, who make late decisions, in the next few days.
Also, have not gotten the “fat packet” in the mail - and we’re only in eastern PA! Maybe they took their time in order to give us a nice, fat aid package! :-)

I got priority wait-listed. Is it just me or is Carnegie Mellon protecting their yield? People with 2200 2300 SATs are getting waitlisted and people with 2000 2100 are accepted…

@fantalove I got in with a 2340 and I think one of the other two at my school who got in has something in the low 2200s. If you’re concluding this from what you’ve seen on this site, you probably have some pretty biased data.

I was wait listed with a 2040!

My two friends with 2300+ got into engineering

Four other friends 2310, 2280, 2260, 2280 were waitlisted/rejected from engineering/MCS

Protecting yield? I have no clue. I got in with 2210. Is that “too low” ? Lol …

@MomForAll
We got our package in CT yesterday in the same condition as yours. It said priority mail and the envelope was ripped to pieces. When you wrote that FA said they couldn’t meet the aid from RPI, were you referring to the $15K medal?
