Cell phone carriers data and voice

How do the major cell phone canaries work on campus and in the dorms? What are the data speeds like? Do calls drop? Any special deals for students? Any input on cell phones would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sprint’s 3g gives dial up speeds. T-mobile, AT&T, Verizon work perfectly.

Most people have AT&T or Verizon. Personally, I’ve had AT&T with no issues at all. In fact, in the basement and sub-basement of Benedum (think feet of concrete below ground) I get signal, which most people (even Verizon people) don’t get.

What about T-Mobile? Specifically 4G data speeds? Here in CA the T-mobile rollout is very spotty. It would be between Verizon and T-Mobile. With no WiFi in Sutherland - I am very interested in the data coverage in that dorm and other key parts of campus.

Can’t remember. I have a few friends with T-mobile that I don’t think had any issues. You don’t need to worry too much about lack of wifi- beyond the dorm rooms, Pitt campus is all wifi (lawns, classrooms, common areas, etc.) I only use the data capabilities on my phone to check bus times at my bus stop.

I have T-Mobile and have had no problems living in Towers, Panther, or the quad. The only place I lose service is the Cathedral basement, but I know some other people who have that happen to them as well. There’s a T-Mobile store on campus so if you ever have problems they’re accessible.

What about sprint?

I don’t know of anyone with Sprint here, honestly.

I have sprint and used it when I visited Pitt. Call and text work fine. 3g is extremely slow. 4g wimax works in most part of the campus. No 4G LTE yet in Pittsburgh.

@PittPanther34 or others with t-mobile - are you able to measure data speed using a free app called speedtest.net? If so I wonder what the non-wifi (turn off wifi) speeds are like especially in the dorms like sutherland, that have no WiFi. If you could post your data speeds and carrier here that would be great. Thanks.

Hi again - reactivating this thread - as i get closer to making a decision. It sounds like I will be fine with either Verizon or T-Mobile (my 2 choices). Does anyone have an APP to actually report data speed? That would be most appreciated.

Also - are there Pitt specific or other useful Apps that only work on apple IOS. I am wondering if it is worth going with an iPhone or if an Android would be adequate? Any opinions of Android vs. IOS would be appreciated.

Thanks!
