Wow. These are conflicting reports about T-Mobile...

I had great reception with T-Mobile when I lived in RT and had at least 3 bars everywhere else on campus.

Great reception with T mobile here too. Cept in cs50.

Who has reception in cs50!?!?!

again, your reception within rieber terrace depends on which side you're on...and, to a lesser extent, what phone you're using. outside, everyone gets great reception.

i don't think anyone gets any reception in any south campus buildings...

AT&T SUCKS in Rieber Terrace. Everywhere else I had full bars though...

maybe my phone's just ****ty. haha

Well, I was on the side of RT facing Hedrick as well. So I can't speak to the situation of a Rieber-Court-facing room. I didn't hear anyone having problems outside at all at orientation.

any opinions on sprint? ill be in RT

cell phone reception can be completely different 2 feet away from where you were standing originally. so unless you find someone who lived in your room before and ask them how their service was, you wont get an accurate representation of how it will be for you.

your phone also has a lot to do with it. my AT&T Tilt at my desk in RT (rieber court side) will frequently alternate between no service and 1 bar, never getting 3G reception. calls are choppy and garbled, even when i stand next to the window. when i put my SIM card in my motorola V3xx, calls are perfect even at my desk and i can get 3-4 bars GSM or 1-2 bars 3G at the window.

if you're feeling experimental, spend like $80 and get prepaid phones from AT&T, VZW, and TMO. test each of them in places you frequent often. then decide from there which service you want to go with. the caveat is that the prepaid phones are typically the cheapo phones that dont get the best reception. :p

sorry to bump up an old thread but i have a question, my parents are making me paying my own line so i am planning on getting a new phone as well, I discovered that my tmobile (razr if that matters) don't get any signal in rieber vista and some rooms in south campus like cs 50 and 24, knsy lecture rooms and humanities... so which carrier should i go with? i heard ATT also have trouble in vista so does that mean im stuck to verizon or just because some phones don't have as good reception?
also im thinking about getting a phone with full keyboard but i don't feel the need for the 30 dollar data plans (since i have to pay for it :)) i mean we have wifi all over campus so i can just use that right? which ones do you guys suggest?

in the bigger sense, the provider has the biggest effect on coverage area, but in areas of fringe reception some phones will perform better than others.

i havent been in the CS rooms in a while, so i forget how AT&T is in there. but you dont NEED reception in a lecture hall anyways. pay attention and stop texting!

haha true but nothing wrong with better reception :)

going blackberry next week..(with ATT)

i always thought about getting a blackberry but i always wondered if i had the need for it... i really want a phone with full keyboard but i don't see the use for constant internet especially since im always on campus, i can get online just about anywhere on campus with my ipod touch and i heard blackberries have wifi capability as well.... so is it possible to get a blackberry without data plan?

Most motorola phones have pretty good signals, expecially the older ones with antennas that actually stick out of the phone. I have verizon and get signal most places except in some of the underground floors.

^ you forgot to state who's you provider!

i thought you would be able to get a blackberry without a data plan (since it does come with wi-fi) but i went to ATT the other day and they said you have to get the blackberry plan.. ($30 a month) which is a pretty big turnoff for me.

the only way to bypass the plan would be to get an unlocked one.

i never thought i'd need a blackberry..but i just can't pass the new releases coming out next month..

ooo the touchscreen blackberry? that phone looks so cool...

you can get blackberries and PDAs without data, but they usually require data if there is a mail in rebate involved in the phone purchase.

iphone is the only phone that requires data all the time no matter what.

i have a blackberry curve 8320 with wifi for sale, and a brand new nokia e71 for sale too. :D

@VTE:

i heard from other friends with blackberries that you don't need to purchase the plan, but ATT reps say otherwise??

is it different between various phone carriers? i'm planning on getting the bold btw..not the storm (touchscreen) :)

the curve is pretty sexy too
