Chance a rising senior for the Ivies?

Hey guys, I'm a rising senior at a highly competitive high school in NJ, and I would like to know my chances at the schools I hope to apply to.

RD: Cornell, UPenn, Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Rutgers, UCLA, Dartmouth, Brown, Columbia

Applying to some, like Princeton and Harvard, for French, while applying to others for math.

Sophomore year:

I took courses in AP Calculus and Geometry at CTY, hence the advanced math courses.
Got a B in AP Calculus BC and an A in Honors Geometry from CTY. I also took courses in differential equations and linear algebra at the local community college, getting A's in both.

Senior Year:
My school offers its students the opportunity of taken legitimate undergrad courses at Princeton University, with Princeton students. I will be taking one in French.

EC's:
Got gold medals in Remote Sensing, Ornithology and Disease Detectives in the Science Olympiad state tournament this year.I was on the 1st place team as well. I'm going to nationals tomorrow.

Got 1 gold medal at states last year, but did not go to nationals.

I have a USCF rating of about 1620.

Participated and placed in National Ocean Science Bowl, as well as DOE Science Bowl.

Qualifed for USAMO this year. Failed freshman and sophomore year. :(
Tiered in Mandelbrot twice. Participated at Princeton Math Competition and HMMT.

Have taught chess at a local library for 2 years, free of charge.

I don't mean to sound overconfident, but I'm pretty sure I'll be a National AP Scholar once my scores come out this year, for what it's worth.

Well, that's my CV, guys. I'm really nervous, and would truly appreciate some advice. Should I even bother applying to the Ivies? I am a Chinese male.

Lol I got A’s in Gym and Health this year. Hooray. I fail.

you definitely have a chance, so I would say to go for it! you are incredibly well-rounded and an exceptional student, so unless you feel pulled to go otherwise, i would say ED to one of the Ivies you like best, and be prepared to wear their colors!

Decent chances. Many of the schools, your major does not affect your decision. If I were you, since you seem to be talented in math, I’d major in Math.
Definitely apply to the ivies.

Lol thanks guys! Bump.

Bump…

Bump bump bump

Bump 10char

your unweighted gpa is too low. you should be around 3.85+

Agh. That was what I was afraid of. :frowning: Is there no hope?

Therebis always hope. Haha. The uw is kinda low but I think the junior year A’s help. The sat is solid. I think you’ll get into a few top schools. Once you apply that far up it gets kinda crazy with how they choose people. Good luck!!

You realize that Princeton and Harvard have restrictive early action, right? So if you apply to either school, you must exclusively apply to that school early (called Single Choice Early Action). There are a few exceptions, like in-state publics, but generally SCEA is completely restrictive. Make sure to think about which schools you’ll have the best chances of gaining admission to, and make your early school(s) choice based upon that.

In my opinion, you’ve got a great shot at all the schools you listed! However, your UW GPA is pretty low–do you attend a competitive school? More importantly, what is your class rank? Honestly, you should be in the top 2.5% of your class to have a good shot at H and P, top 5-10% for the others (probably a little higher percentage for the publics). The higher your rank, the better.

I’d recommend you save Harvard and Princeton for RD, unless you’re absolutely, wholeheartedly in love with one of them. It’s best to apply to the less selective schools early, so you have a guaranteed school for the remainder of senior year. It wouldn’t be fun to receive a rejection on December 15th, leaving you insecure for the whole year.

Btw, put some time into those essays. I honestly think the essay portion can play a pivotal role in admission to the more selective schools. Try to be original, and genuine. That’s the best advice I can offer you.

I don’t see why you wouldn’t get into MIT and Caltech since these schools appreciate candidates from science background very much. For the last two years, MIT took candidates who participated in IMO from my country so I think you have a very good shot at these two techies.

As for the Ivy League, I strongly recommend displaying your leadership qualities through your resume and essays; your SATs and academics are very impressive so you have a very good shot at those schools two.

However, I think should apply EA/ED to schools that are your top shots/ you love the most

Uh, I’m pretty sure Harvard and Princeton are unrestricted EA now. At least, that’s what the College Board site says. Is it wrong?

Yes, it is.

strong chances :)

They’re both definitely SCEA. Sorry to burst your bubble.

UW GPA is a little low, but KIND OF cancels out with Weighted… not sure though. You do have a great SAT score

Lol okay. Scratch Harvard and Princeton early, then. I’ll just apply EA to all the schools outlined, plus Chicago.

What’s your rank? We can chance you much better if you give us your weighted GPA class rank. By the way, I think you made the right decision regarding your early schools.
