Extracurriculars:

Founder and Managing Director of an non-profit that serves to develop creative techniques for the educational self-sufficiency of developing nations around the globe. I hosted a series of workshops at a school in India, and now the organization and myself are expanding to such countries as El Salvador. This is a really important issue to me because I myself immigrated to the United States from India at an age when I was cognizant of the differences in the educational systems. We have been well-endowed with so many resources here in the United States, and I sincerely wish to contribute to the development of education for all.

Manager of an online math competition modeled after other proof-based competitions. It serves to generate interest in logical thinking as well as in proof-based mathematics. There is truly a need for this, in my opinion. My job in this competition is reaching out to sponsors and organizing donations in order to put them to the correct use.

One of the original members of a campaign that works to reach out to restaurants in the city and ask them to ask their customers to add just one dollar to their bills in order to provide for the homeless in the inner city through another non-profit organization.

Scientific research : I am heavily invested in science and over the course of my high school career, I have had some experience with it.

Research mentorship with an Astrophysics Professor at the Local University. I was being mentored in studying WISE (Wide-field infrared survey explorer) data using computer programming in order to study the Cosmic Microwave Background.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute High School Scholar Program: I was researching the effects of auditory stimuli on the electrical responses elicited by the auditory cortex and neighboring regions of the human brain. I had some success in generating new data and am working on pushing the project forward to generate even more reliable results that may one day be used in diagnosis of acoustic neuromas, etc.

Research with a local company that specializes in molecular gastronomy: I work on developing optimal chemical concentrations and temperatures/pHs of solutions in order to yield maximum quality/profits and minimizes loss.

Piano : I have been playing for around 5 years. I have ranked superior in the Piano Guild 2 times and have ranked Superior in the Federation 1 time. I plan on continuing piano into college.

IB Student Government (Position: Senator): I am heavily involved in the student government of the IB Academy at my school, being the Senator for the Class of 2015. This organization is similar to Student Government, but it focuses on the IB Academy. I work on organizing events for the IB including but not limited to tours for current 8th graders, IB Academy Nights for freshmen, and socialization events for all.

Geography Club (Position : Vice President): I love learning about different people, landforms, etc. of the world, and I have been involved in Geography Club since freshman year. For the past two years, our team has placed in the top 2, with us winning first place at the Geography Bee for our county last year. I want to spark interest in cultural and geographical understanding in my school.

Speech and Debate (Position : Organizational Committee) : I joined debate and competed in the novice public forum last year and won in local competitions. This year, I am competing in varsity and hope that I can hone my speech skills. As a member of the organizational committee, I work with new members to solidify their cases and to teach them the subtleties in debate.

Mu Alpha Theta (Position : Secretary) : I really love mathematics and I work as an officer of Mu Alpha Theta to plan competitions, events, as well as tutoring sessions and meetings.

Other club memberships : Best Buddies, Science National Honor Society, Model UN, FBLA, Key Club.

Euro-Challenge : I was a member of my school's Euro Challenge team that placed first in my state and 6th in the country. Euro Challenge is a competition that strives to spark interest in economics, policy making, etc. in high school students and works with them in order to develop sustainable solutions to problems in the European continent.

Istanbul Center Art and Essay Contest : I was the winner in my state for an essay I wrote on the topic : "One Billion Hungry in the World: What is your Role?" I won a $200 cash prize along with an all paid trip to Turkey.

LETTERS OF REC : I haven't really started thinking about these, but I will probably ask the math teacher I have known for 2.5 years, since she saw me self-studying my way through Calculus BC and other math subjects as well. The other LoR will probably come from either Chemistry teacher or APUSH teacher. Counselor rec will probably be awesome since both my counselor and IB lead teacher love me (I've been planning activities for our class in IB).

ESSAYS : Haven't really taken a look at these either, but I'll try to make them really good, mostly since I have a lot of time.

COLLEGES (NOTE: These are just my top schools; I have other safeties as well); I have written my own views on my chances next to them.

MIT (Very high reach)
Caltech (Low to mid Reach)
UChicago (Low to mid Reach)
Carnegie Mellon (SCS or DMS) (If SCS : High Reach; Otherwise: Low to mid reach)
Harvard (VERY High reach)
Stanford (VERY High reach)
Brown (for the applied mathematics department) (Low Reach)
Princeton (VERY High reach)

Thank you for reading! Do tell me whether my chance-myselfs ( :P) are correct or not.

Just a clarification (it won’t let me edit), but I based my “chance myselfs” off of a combination of this site and people I know.

Bumping because this went all the way back to the third page. Any help is really appreciated! Thanks!

MIT - reach
Caltech - high match
UChicago - low reach
Carnegie Mellon - match
Harvard - reach
Stanford - reach
Brown - high match
Princeton - reach
good luck
:)

It’s nearly impossible to chance international students, especially for the schools you are applying to. Competition is fierce. Regardless, best of luck.

Oh sorry if I didn’t make this clear! I am not an international applicant. I reside in and am a citizen of the US. My ethnicity is Indian.

@Aquasands: Thanks!

CMU SCS is supposed to be very hard to get into, but If you chose any other major I would say you’re probably in. I also hear UChicago is very good for mathematics, though I think it’s sort of hard to say for undergraduate studies.

You have incredible stats and ECs, but your ORM status might hurt you. Overall, those schools are all reaches for you, but definitely not out of reach. Carnegie Mellon is a high match / low reach.

@boby642: Thanks for the chance! I’ll definitely look into other schools at CMU!

@thebeatlestoday: Thanks! What would you suggest I improve in my app? Or does it mostly depend on essays now? (I ask this mostly because I have some time to improve :3 )

@johannbach If you want to study CS then don’t switch, I was just saying you would get in if you chose anything else (not that you should). Your stats are good, I would just focus on the essays, make sure they are just as amazing. Also depending on where you live, you could apply for an impressive internship or something for over the break.

It’ll be tough but  :
MIT - high reach
Caltech - low reach
UChicago - reach/low reach
Carnegie Mellon - match
Harvard - high reach
Stanford - reach
Brown - high match
Princeton - reach

Dude this is amazing!!! How do you get time to do all of this??
MIT- reach
Cal-Tech- low reach
Uchicago- low reach
Carnegie Mellon- match
Harvard- reach
Stanford- reach
Brown- low reach
Princeton- reach

You are an extremely competitive applicant but nevertheless these are tough colleges to get into. Good luck!! Chance back please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1577460-chance-blue-devil-duke-ed-hopeful-receive-chance-return-2.html</a></p>

Thanks everyone! Bump for anyone who wants to add any thoughts.

MIT - low reach
Caltech - high match
UChicago - match
Carnegie Mellon - match
Harvard - low reach
Stanford - reach
Brown - high match
Princeton - reach

You are a very strong applicant for all of these schools. I wish you luck. You already chanced me, but if anyone else wants to chance me (I chance back too.) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1580696-chance-me-please-will-chance-back-2.html</a></p>

johannbach: Just make sure your essays are unique and thoughtful and that your teacher recs are glowing. Beyond that, your application is impeccable :)

I think you just chanced yourself…

But I think that your app is very competitive and I would be very surprised if you didn’t get into at least a couple of schools on your list.
