I am posting for my D. She goes to a very competitive high school in NJ and had a rough start. She is planning to apply ED this upcoming fall.
Stats:
GPA (w/o senior year): W 3.79 UW 3.41 I know these are low but she has a significant upward trend; her unweighted junior year GPA is higher than her weighted freshman year GPA.
GPA (w/ senior year): W 3.97 UW 3.50 She is taking fairly predictable courses so this is the prediction. It says we can send in these grades by a certain date and certainly plan on doing so. Will get almost straight 'A’s.
Senior load: AP Gov, AP Lit, AP Calc AB, AP Psych, Anatomy, Comparative Religions, Photography.
She has already taken AP Bio, APUSH, AP Chem, and a post-AP class. Hopefully the colleges will recognize the rigor of her course load. In addition, her school is known for having very difficult classes so a B here would be an A at another high school.
SAT: 2200
ACT: 34
She will take the Math II and either US History or Lit subject tests these next few months.
Extra Curriculars:
President of Rotary Club (was VP and Secretary in earlier years)
Editor of the school newspaper
Did a lot of community service with the church
Won several awards for Russian
Won a few (relative small) medals for Model UN
Mentor for freshmen
NHS
Summer:
Public Speaking camp at Harvard
Took an extra history course
Internship with local business
Other:
I went to Wellesley so she will be a legacy, and intend on writing a letter about how my D will both benefit and benefit from Wellesley. I have also donated a fair bit of cash (if that matters).
We have bee looking at the prompts for the essays and, if the past is any indication of the future, they should we well written.
She is asking two of her humanities teachers for recs, which was a tough call, but she actually spoke in their classes and they liked her (she was silent and confused in her science and math class so she felt those teachers would have nothing exciting or good to write about).
Her counselor rec will point out that she got, for lack of better words, shafted her first year in terms of her science class/teacher and that she has shown tremendous improvement. Well, at least when we met with her that’s what we agreed for her to emphasize. The content should hopefully be good, but her counselor is very “vanilla” and scatter brained so I’d say a 8/10 at best.
