Yeah perfected, I got a 1330 and did RD, you probably lucked out when you did EA. I did make it in for next year as a guaranteed transfer though, I made something creative and sent it in and they sent me a letter

bdmet - Not necessarily “luck”, I mean I was qualified in other areas, and it wasn’t SO competitive as it is becoming with the economy as it is. But it’s fortunate nonetheless. Congrats on the GT! Where you heading for the time being?

zoosermom - I believe they use unweighted, but the fact that she’s an IB student will definitely balance that out.

bdmet - If you care to share, I’m slightly curious to know a little more about your stats/ECs. Also, are you in state or out of state? Thanks.

Perfected, I didnt mean to say that u got in on luck, its just a figure of speech that I overuse sometimes, I meant something along the lines of it being advantageous that you went EA, sorry if that came across badly!

I am going to The College of New Jersey next fall, and if i love it ill stay there and if not ill join you up at Bing! Hoping it wont be too late by soph year!

Rd for '13, was waitlisted, Binghamton didnt accept anyone at all off the waitlist, so I sent something in and managed to get a guaranteed transfer for next year.

Hope this helps!

Thanks that actually does help a lot! I’m actually a fellow specialized high school kid (Brooklyn Tech :))! I’m taking the ACT in September and hoping to get a 31 or 32, so hopefully that would make a difference in my profile.

TCNJ is a great school as well, so congrats on that!

Haha thats cool! You’ve got a great HS as well! Getting that on the ACT would definitely help!

Thanks dreamerr and good luck to you!

I’d like to point out that Specialized High Schools, although perhaps a benefit to your application, should not be overly considered. Bronx Science this year was shocked by the number of rejections from Binghamton. In previous years, we typically had a 70% acceptance rate. This year that number was at 49% with many students assuming it would be a “safety”. The GPA/SAT of accepted students was also higher this year than last.

Also keep in mind that the current state of the economy makes it very difficult for University and Perspective (students) alike to make predictions. Always try your absolute best, and make sure to put careful thought into your essays and any part of your application that can help distinguish you from just a set of numbers. I think that numbers alone in “Chance Me” threads simply cannot help in making a prediction. If the University spots something particular about you that they truly want, they may be able to forgive certain other components, such as an SAT score that is slightly lacking.

Best advice I can offer: do your absolute BEST in your application, be sure to get recommendations from teachers who truly loves you, write an essay well in advance and get plenty of advice on it, and one extremely important component also is (unfortunately) the SAT.

I know, my school was shocked as well from the number of rejections from Binghamton this year. But is my SAT low? I thought my GPA was my weak point.

dreamerr, your GPA as a simple number cannot be used by other people to rate your chances at Binghamton. For example, at Bronx Science, the Valedictorian for the class of 2009 had a 98.66 GPA. At other schools that number can be as low as 92, or as high as 108. Bronx Science doesn’t weigh averages.

Most colleges “strip” your GPA when comparing you to other students. Your unweighted GPA is generally more important. Your SAT score seems on par with what Binghamton accepted this year, if not slightly higher.

One HUGE factor is what SCHOOL at Bing you are applying for. I know I shouldn’t be saying this, but I have a suspicion that CCPA is the easiest school at Binghamton to be admitted to. From threads in the 2008-2009 admissions cycle, Binghamton was literally emailing students offering them seats at CCPA instead of Harpur. It was founded in 2006. The only major is Human Development.

the human development major for undergrads existed prior to 2006 – it was part of the school of education – they basically split what used to all be in the school of education to create ccpa and the current school of ed. i think it may have had a different name before the split, but i am not sure. so ccpa is “new” as a separate entity, but not in terms of the programs it offers.

admissions does vary by school – SOM is the hardest to get into. but you have to be careful not to apply to one school vs. another based simply on ease of getting in – you have to consider what you want to study and the ease of transferring once there – eg. if you want SOM, but apply to harpur thinking it’d be easier to get in, don’t assume you’ll later be able to do an intra-university transfer to SOM since it can be very hard to do so.

OK so I’m really happy that you said that, because I actually want to apply to CCPA! Whew, so hopefully that should help! :)

I wish I could disclose my unweighted average, but I really don’t know what it is. I assume it is a little above an 85, if that helps at all?

Anyone else have any input?

I can’t really help you with chances, as I entered the school when the admissions were apparently easier than this (just last year actually; I will be a sophomore this fall). I received a 1350 on my SATs (I don’t think Bing superscores, but if they do I received a ~1450). My EC’s weren’t that great; a few random hobbies, 1 sport, and ~100 hours of community service. My letters of recommendation on the other hand were glowing. I was accepted through regular decision, in fact I sent my application on the last possible day lol. I would’ve assumed that you would have an 80%+ chance of getting in (at least with my pool of applicants), but apparently that is no longer the case.

Hopefully this helps at least a little bit.

I’d also like to reiterate that there is a difference in ease of being accepted depending on the school you apply to. SoM is definitely the hardest, and I’ve heard that Decker is also pretty difficult. Not sure which is the easiest, but I would assume it would either be Harper or CCPA. But also, as iamhere said, it’s not a good idea to apply to a different school than the one you want to go to because it might be easier. It is incredibly difficult to transfer from Harper–>SoM (3.8+ GPA is necessary, and they might not even have any open slots anyway). On the other hand, if you get into SoM and want to transfer to Harper, I’d imagine that would be pretty easy to do.

All I can really say is apply and see what happens. I’d venture to guess that you have a pretty good shot, regardless of the increase in applicants and whatnot.

How do you choose which school you’re applying for on the common app?

bdmet - Soph. year certainly is not too late. You’ll be taking mostly geneds (or whatever else they call the liberal arts required classes at TCNJ) anyway, the only thing that you’d be missing out on, as I think bingambassador has said at one point, is meeting people at Binghamton during your first year. But it’s not a big deal to come in later in the game if it’s the school you want. But you’ll see, just go in with an open mind, and see what happens. I wish you luck!

According to the College Board website, Bing takes the highest section scores across all test dates.

Daughter emailed to ask about weighting and was told that whatever the high school sends is what Binghamton uses they don’t unweight or re-weight.

I also have another question: Is it better to have a bunch of recommendations, or should I limit them for Bing? Some schools say they look at everything, but Miami for example said don’t send more than two.

I don’t see where you select which college you want to apply to on the Common App…

Yeah I had that problem also ^. I think it’s just based on what major you pick.

Also, update:
ACT composite 31
english 33
math 31
science 30
reading 28
writing score 8

And A in college psychology class. I’m assuming this should all help?
