"THE" CMU 2015 CHANCE Thread-- Please STOP creating New chance Threads

Hello Class of 2015

As much as I loathe "chance me" threads -- as expected the junior crowd is now posting.

It would be really efficient for everyone involved to keep ONE Chance Me Thread here-- rather than so many multiple threads for the next 11 months!

Remember everyone- it's all wild speculation....
This would be a great stat project-- "Predictions on CC -- did they come through?"

Thanks 2015 crowd for ONE thread...

Best of Luck...

While that’s a nice idea, it would become incredibly difficult to have, say, 50-100 “Chance me!” posts on one thread. It would require digging upon digging to find relevant posts, as well as just be a general mess. While the large # of Chance Me threads is inefficient, it is much more efficient for the person posting.

or this: Imagine posting your chance me here, then having 15 other people post their Chance Me’s. Then imagine having 3 people reply per chance me, in a random order, not necessarily indicating who they are replying too. Ew.

Just my opinion.

^ It has worked well for Berkeley.

Will gladly post here and try it out, just an opinion and prediction =]

And havent looked at UCB’s forum – if that’s the case, then this is probably a good idea.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/379946-official-chances-thread.html</a></p>

I don’t get the hostility over chance threads. Odds are good there aren’t more than 3-4 active at any given time, maybe 6-7 during the heat of admissions season. I posted one; so did probably every new 2014’er who’s posting on this board. And I happen to like reading them quite a lot in their current format - it’s like opening a file on an employee. All comments in the thread pertain to that specific poster. UCB’s format is scattered and awkwardly organized - most people commenting aren’t even responding to the chancers, just asking general questions.

I will continue to post in the chance threads people post, as I believe it offers a more personal response to a worried junior looking for comfort (or lack thereof).

Just for the record…
The reason I don’t like these threads is b/c they can give a student false hope …
Students and parents commenting here aren’t in the shoes of an AdCom…and this is especially true for CMU which we all know is NOT a numbers driven decision making group. CMU admissions are truly evaluated as a whole person-- . So it really isn’t fair for us to speculate…I think these threads are speculation … you just never know.
If you want to look at numbers these are published…so the chance-me thread doesn’t add anything.

I also find that a reasonable number of such threads are ■■■■■■■■…as we saw some of those recently here as well.

IMO I would rather have false hope then no hope. And recently the people posting chance me threads have excellent shots of getting into CMU. Except for the turkey guy which was really hard to chance.

Just as a personal anecdote, I probably went a little overboard with the number of chance threads I made in the year leading up to my college admissions season…

HOWEVER, please look at the very first one I created:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/462392-mit-rice-getting-idea.html</a></p>

No need to read the whole thing (unless you would really like to chance me for whatever reason :P), but pay attention to the schools I listed. In particular, pay attention to the absence of Carnegie Mellon. Now look at post #5

That was the FIRST I heard of this school. And here I am now. Chance threads may be annoying and sources of false hope, but sometimes they can count for something. My thanks to icy9ff8, whoever he may be.

mom2012and14

Can’t you find something better to do with your time than worry about stuff like this, about “appropriately organizing chances threads so kids don’t get false hope?” I mean, come on. You’re a mom of 2014. Your kid has gotten into college, no need to play mother to us. I know you’re just doing this because you feel you need to have some purpose, but come on. Find a hobby. Pick up the guitar. Go to the bar and meet some friends. Please, though, I see you here WAY too much worrying about people who you don’t even know at all.

Thanks Ilikecollage-- maybe I’ll send you a spread sheet of how I spent my time today for your approval and guidance on my life purpose…but it’s none of your business how I spend 10 minutes of my time online…

Actually, this is my business-- My partner and I run a college consulting business-- we have helped our clients navigate the process and gain a spot at a wide variety of schools and programs. Chance threads are still in my professional opinion nearly completely worthless-- the people responding are speculating. Data is more important and I tell my clients to ignore and not participate in these threads.

I also happen to LOVE CMU in case you didn’t notice and have a special affinity for CMU applicants and admits.

If you don’t care for my posts, then ignore them.
I’m not anyone’s mom…I’m giving professional advice based on experiences with close to a hundred families, and my own two successful students.

Pretty sure these people aren’t your clients…And I’m also pretty sure that no one cares about your professional opinion, the opinion that calls for a cute little “chance revolution.” You don’t run this site, you can’t tell people to STOP MAKING CHANCE THREDS LOL.

It isn’t so much that you’re always on here, it’s more the obnoxious posts like this. Lay of the internets, you take it too seriously trying to act like a leader.

Sorta unrelated—I remember your ■■■■■ ALERT–REALLY AN ******* IF YOU ASK ME post a while back and it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever read.

ilikecollege, your power play here is at least twice as aggressive as anything I’ve seen from mom2012and14 (or anyone else, for that matter). Could you back off please?

Geez, guys, it’s just a forum. :)

on the one hand – it is a little silly to demand that a forum bow to your wishes without having admin powers. Regardless of what you do for a living, on this forum we are all of equal weight.

On the other hand, ilikecollage took retaliation way too far. The negativity is totally unneeded - it’s just a forum about college questions. Let people do what they like and temper your own actions accordingly; do not provoke or condescend.

Can’t we just agree to disagree?

I don’t know, it’s kinda hilarious how there are no chance requests on this thread.

dear theater mom,

ima guess from your name that youre a little biased.

love,
ilikecollage

I’ll start. I have a 670 M and 630 CR SAT with a 3.75 UW and 11 AP/ AICE classes. Decent EC’s (club soccer captain, NHS officer, surf club officer, etc).

Any chance?

Match - HSS

Reach/Match - CIT, MCS

Low chances- SCS, Tepper, CFA (unless you have amazing talent)

All depends on what program you’re applying to.

hmm in the ECs surf club member…they might wonder if you will be happy so far from the surf. Best thing about CMU and that they value in their students is the multidisciplinary interests–if you like engineering and you like art …they love you.

Do you think applying to more than one school improves or lowers the chance of admission? My take on it is that as long as the stats show that the student can handle the work, it seems that kids that embrace the many options at CMU are the ones that they want to offer admission to…I sometimes wonder if kids that apply to several schools because they have several aptitudes and interest are given more of a bump to be admitted to CMU than someone who applies only to Tepper or CIT etc…the one exception being Theatre since that is a single minded goal and it is a big negative to see a student that isn’t one hundred percent committed…Just a hunch, but may have some truth to it…thoughts on how applying to more than one program improves/lowers chances?

I’ll go second (applying to CIT or MCS)
