Chance me for Penn CAS ED, UCLA, Cornell, Georgetown, USC? Will Chance back

Just got my grades back and I figure I should do one of these.

GPA: Pretty bad. Around a 3.78 UW, 4.37 W. I got 5 B's sophomore year, 3 Junior Year.
Class Rank: We don't rank per say, but I know i'm in the top 10% of my class, towards the lower end.
UC GPA: 4.0 capped, 4.3 uncapped.
APs/Honors (Soph/Junior): Language AP, Physics B AP, Calc AB AP, Euro AP. Precalc H, Chem H, Spanish 3 H, English 2 H.
AP Scores: Waiting on Language, Physics, and Calc, but I got a 5 on Euro AP and a 4 on the Chem AP.
SAT: 2340 Composite. 800 CR, 770 M, 770 W
SAT II's: 800 Math II, 760 Lit, 750 Chem.
AP's next year: Gov, Macro, Calc BC, Physics C, and Spanish 4

Extra Currics:
Speech and Debate, 4 years. Various awards, but nothing too notable - competed at State tournament, will be Varsity LD Captain Next year.
Math Teacher, 1 year - 4 hours a week, have about 100 hours total.
Volunteering at various shelters - I never counted the hours, but I've been going about an hour and a half a week for 2 years. Probably should have counted the hours, but oh well.
Did track for a year sophomore year, couldn't do it again because of speech and debate junior year.
Bunch of student leadership at my school - frequently chosen as a leader for various stuff, participated in ASB, etc.
Leader of a couple of clubs, but they aren't serious, mostly goof-off clubs.

Summer Stuff:
Last summer, I worked at a start up as an intern. Did communications and business, I basically made strategies up and designed it. Expecting a very good rec from the guy I worked for, since he basically showed me what he was going to say.
This summer, I'll be doing an intense program where I'm teaching middle school kids (a continuation of being a math teacher). It's about 9-10 hours a day for 8 weeks, no pay but I get a stipend. Also, going to get a very good rec from the guy I'm working for.

To throw in some last stuff that may make me appealing
Rec from English Teacher should be fantastic - she went to Stanford, and we're really close.
Rec from science teacher should be pretty good, he likes me a lot.
I expect my essays to be pretty good, probably 8/10 at least. My english professor is proofreading my initial drafts, and she says they're pretty great. (One thing to note - English is probably the only classes where I never dipped below a solid A)

Hook: The time I've spent teaching kids - I want to do a graduate degree in education. I've spent hours working and researching strategies to help kids do better in school, its really important to me - note my main extracurric comes from teaching.

I'm an Asian male, by the way. Penn ED's the dream, but UCLA, Georgetown, Cornell, and USC are the next 4 on my list. I'll be applying undeclared most likely, might say economics.
Please chance!

Your SAT is strong
you are over the the 75th percentile for all of them -which is really good
your GPA is a little low but it is definitely high enough for these schools-I would say it is hovering around the average applicant’s
Seeing that the acceptance rates are really low in these schools I could never say that all of them are safeties (I feel that Georgetown is though).
They are probably matches to high matches (simply due to the competitive nature of the schools)
Your EC stuff is great - i feel it shows consistency with what you want to go into and I feel the admissions people like to see that

I couldn’t find a lot of info on Penn but looking at graphs it looks like it is hard to get into even with scores as high as yours -this is where I think your EC’s will shine

chance me at
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1510828-chances-cal-poly-slo-engineering.html</a></p>

You have really impressive stats and I’m sure you will be a great teacher someday! The only possible issue is your GPA, which (unfortunately) will be scrutinized against higher GPAs of other Asian males.

Out of curiosity, which classes were your B’s in?

So I’ve been particularly bad at science - I got 4 B+'s in science (Chem/Physics), I got 2 B+'s in Spanish, both 1st semester Soph/Junior Year, I got a B+ in WHAP First semester sophomore year, and a B+ in Precalc 2nd semester sophomore year.

bump 10char

You have a fairly decent chance for most of them. Make sure you apply to some safety schools. As said by a couple others, your GPA is struggling a bit, but if you can get it up even to a 3.8 or a little higher, than your prospects will improve. You clearly have a passion for Penn, so make sure that you clearly elaborate something about that in your essay. Good luck! By the way, is it possible that you could post on the forum what schools you did make it into? That would be great!

Your SAT is outstanding and good enough for all those schools, but the only thing holding you back would be your GPA. Your ECs show a lot of consistency which is good.

Penn CAS ED - High match/low reach
UCLA - Match
Cornell - Low Reach
I am not really sure about the other two

Chance me back!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1510797-chance-me-illinois-schools-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Your SAT scores are very impressive, however, your GPA is not quite so. The thing is that high SAT low GPA may indicate laziness to some schools. Your EC’s are very good and fairly consistent.

These are all hyper competitive schools with very low acceptance rates. I’d say your GPA is a little low for georgetown, but I’d still consider you a match. I think that UCLA is a good match for you, Penn and Cornell might be slight reaches with that GPA, and USC could even be a safety.

Yeah that’s the main thing I’m worried about, looking lazy. It’s mostly because I spend a lot of time on my extracurriculars, which I emphasized throughout high school (my worst semesters were when I had like, 4 other nonacademic things on my transcript), so I hope colleges notice that. Still, nice to know that people think that Penn ED is a low reach, and UCLA is a match, I’ve been really stressing about my GPA.

bumppppppppp

I’m pretty sure I already chanced you before for Penn, but whatever.

Everything’s pretty strong but your Unweighted GPA. That being said, I don’t think it’ll kill you - you are above a 3.75+, and you have a fairly good weighted gpa for that unweighted, which means you challenged yourself. Penn and Georgetown will like that volunteer service, especially Georgetown. Make sure to emphasize that in your essays.

Penn CAS ED: Low Reach (Reach if not ED)
Cornell: Not sure, but I’d say Low Reach/Reach
Georgetown: Match/High Match
UCLA: Match
USC: Safety/Low Match

Colleges don’t look at semester grades, as far as I’m concerned. If you got a B+ total in the classes you discussed above, there might be a problem (you don’t have a specific subject that you struggle in). Alas, I, nor any of the people on this thread, are admissions officers. Apply early to a school that you really, really love, and if you don’t get in, it’s their own loss.

Actually, I got overall B+'s in Physics/Chem…will that weakness in science hurt me?

your sats are very strong nd i think they will help u a lot in the application process. your ECs are also solid, but the one thing that you may need for UPenn (not rly cornell or the others) is something that makes you really stand out. Something that says wow! if u can do something even better with the education thing that would seal the deal, but other than that even if u didnt you still stand a good chance.

You are a strong applicant but you lack something unique/luster.

Penn- Reach
UCLA- Match
Georgetown- High Match
Cornell- Reach
USC- Match

I think the UCs are matches and the others are low-med reaches. Very strong scores, I’m jealous! :stuck_out_tongue:
Good luck! :)

I didn’t include this in my original post, since I didn’t think it was relevant, but apparently doing research that you won’t be finished with would still be considered. If I do that, and get a rec letter from a Stanford professor, would it help my chances at these colleges at all?

I think doing research at Stanford would definitely help A LOT. Even if it’s not finished or published, it is a great EC that looks great, especially if you apply to Stanford.

Your SATs are good, and your ECs are decent. The only thing I would say is that your grades are a bit low and you’re Asian (which isn’t good b/c its a over-represented minority). A lot of your schools like PENN and Georgetown are really hard to get into, but with your resume, I think you have a pretty good shot.

And please chance back!!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1514587-chance-me-please-will-chance-back-upenn-nyu-uchicago-etc.html</a></p>

I agree with most others - your SAT’s are definitely a bonus to you, as well as your EC’s. Of course great essays will be a must, but then again, they are a must for most schools of the rank you’re applying to. Overall I agree that it would only help you to come up with some sort of hook that really makes you stand out, because especially for schools like Penn, you’ll be in the midst of a thousands of other candidates who have stats just like yourself and you’ll need something to be chosen out of that enormous pool!

Penn- A bit of a reach, but the SAT gives you a fair chance (they place quite a bit of importance on that score)
UCLA- High match/low reach
Georgetown- High match/low reach
Cornell- A reach (as it is for everyone)
USC- High match

Good luck!

Your SATs are very good and your ecs are great as well. I would say that USC is a high match as well as Georgetown and UCLA. Penn and Cornell are reach but in general you have a great chance. Good luck!
