UAB EMSAP has very little chance for an out of stater.

On the other hand, Texas has 5 or 6 combined programs (UTD, UTSA, UH, TT, and at least couple of others). So that is where you should be applying since they favor Texas residents.

Rice Baylor is a long shot too since it is quite competitive at the national level.

@texaspg‌ thanks for your input. i am also planning on applying to all the public bs md programs in TX since they are cheap and are only for TX residents.

If you are serious about going into medicine, my suggestion would be to put maximum effort on the texas apps. Most Texas residents come back to Texas for med school even when they attend elite undergrad schools OOS because it ends up being most cost effective. It is really not worth the money to attend RPI Albany or GWU for a competitive student like you who has the benefit of being a Texas resident where 90+% of the Texas med seats are reserved for residents.

Is there some catch with UH such as only opened to need based, south Texas, educationally disadvantaged?

I agree that GWU, RPI, Drexel aren’t worth it for Texas residents. Texaspg, what about boston, brown, NU?

Also, don’t retake the SAT. 2310 is good enough. There is no point in getting 2350 at this point

I think you mean EMSAP program at UTMB which aligns with several smaller universities in Texas.

http://www.utmb.edu/somenrichprograms/

The one at UH provides 5 seats each at UTMB and UT Houston.

http://www.ivyplanners.com/documents/BS-MD-IvyPlanners.pdf

Boston, Brown and NU are also quite expensive. Good schools for students with well off parents but not the best choices if someone needs to borrow money for medical school.

This is an issue with any combined program that is offered today by any private schools in the nation. One has to know clearly how much they might end up borrowing on the long run for medical school and not just how much the undergrad costs in those schools.

That’s interesting. I haven’t heard of that program before. Is it new?

No, it just supports a lot of rural area based students and been around a while. Someone living in Houston or Dallas might not want to attend a school in McAllen or El Paso to make the cut for medical school which allows the State to encourage the rural students to pursue medicine by getting them into the program early.

@FischerDude97, these are the ones you should apply to in-state:

Rice-Baylor

UTMB’s EMSAP program:
http://www.utmb.edu/somenrichprograms/

UTSW’s UT-PACT program:

UT San Antonio’s FAME program:

For those out-of-state, depending on your parental finances, you can go here:

is the Texas Tech one competitive? What kind of stats do you need?

^ I’d like to know this as well. Does anyone have info about FAME’s stats?

@texaspg @FischerDude97‌ I am a current student in the UAB EMSAP program, and I wanted to let you know that being an out of state student in no way hurts your chances for being accepted into the program. UAB’s EMSAP program accepts the same number of instate and out of state students (in my year it was 7 for both). In terms of BS/MD program, UAB’s EMSAP program is unique compared to others. For one, I truly believe UAB EMSAP is the biggest bang for your buck. I see that you have a 237 PSAT, would I be correct in assuming you’re national merit? In that case, even though you are out of state, you would be given a considerable amount of scholarship. One of my classmates in the program was out of state and national merit and she was given a full ride for undergraduate studies. Moreover, for medical school, UAB’s EMSAP program differs because it does not require you to attend UAB for medical school- we use an opt out program where you are allowed to apply and attend other medical schools, even those in your home state. With that being said many students do continue their medical education at UAB since it is a very prestigious medical school in the south and many EMSAP students receive scholarships to medical school- a fact that is very special to UAB EMSAP that you will not find in many other combined BS/MD programs. While these medical school scholarships are not guaranteed, if you excel in college the same way you did in high school, it seems very likely. I am going to link you to the new EMSAP website for more information, and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask me! Good luck!

@theshmishmi Does UAB med school provide any kind of scholarship to OOS EMSAP students?

OOS tuition is quite high for med school.

@texaspg‌ several out of state EMSAP students received partial scholarships to UAB medical school so yes it happens quite frequently.

@TheShmiShmi‌ Your detailed info is very helpful! Thank you! My D is OOS and is interested in EMSAP, but she is not so sure what kind of ECs the program is looking for, volunteering? or research? or leadership? In general, when will the EMSAP give out the interview notice? Thanks in advance.

The medical school admissions board takes into account all types of extra-curricular activities when reviewing applicants. Most (if not all) have had some type of volunteering (especially medically related), shadowing, and leadership roles in clubs. Many have completed research or bio-medical internships in high school as well. These of course are not necessary but would greatly prove to the admissions board that your daughter has a passion for a career in medicine and is willing to work hard for it. Interview notifications should go out the first or second week of January. Those who receive interviews will get a call from our program director inviting them to our interview weekend in late January. Good luck to your daughter!!

@TheShmiShmi‌ Thank you so much!

This is a long shot since this post is over a year old, but my son found out today he will interview for UAB’s emsap opportunity. Can you give any info. about the interview process?
