I am thinking of skipping it now.

Alabama?

I’ve never even heard of their Medical School.

If it’s close to where you live, I would consider it, but I don’t know much about the program.

i think you missed the deadline anyway…

UAB is a very honored medical institution in the Birmingham area. Several buildings make up the very modern campus. We’ve visited the area several times and are very impressed.

My DD has an interview there for the EMSAP next fall at the end of this month. She is thrilled. She now says she has a 1 in 3 chance since the field has narrowed to 30 at this point.

[She’s already been accepted to 4 schools and is waiting on her other 3 but only just sent in those apps.]

Keeping our fingers crossed…

Hi MomToFive,

Congrat to your DD!!!

Some questions for you:

1) When your DD recieved the interview invitation? Via email or regular mail?

2) What are the interview dates that she can choose from?

3) Are your DD in-state or out-of-state?

4) What is your daughter’s stats? (if you don’t mind to share!)

5) She’s already been accepted to 4 schools. What are these schools? Are these BS/MD programs?

Thanks!

DANG jealous!
just a bit though
honestly though, on my list of my bs/md programs (out of the 6 i have applied to) this is the second to last one. The med school is ranked meh nationally (not planning on living in alabama forever), its pretty expensive and didnt give me as much scholarship money as i woulda liked, and the undergrad school is really bad.
I guess ill keep an open mind but honestly i think i would pick a regular 4 year undergrad + 4 year med than this one.

To Inguye02,

My son got the interview notice too!
1)They called on Jan 3rd or 4th and followed by an email on Jan 7th.
2)They only interview on Jan 27th. One day only for everybody(7:30am to noon). Orientation + three 25-min interview sections. No other option. No reschedule.
3)My son is out-of-state.
4)SAT:2280, GPA:4.46 (weighted), SAT II: Math:800, Chem:790. 13 APs.

They will have a reception to meet their staffs and students currently in the program on the evening of 26th.

Havnt gotten anything, maybe i was rejected then. :(

Rejection letter came in the mail today. Honestly im a bit relieved I dont have to pay for so much transportation costs. Not as bitter as I expected i would be

^Don’t worry about it. It’s an 8 year program anyway. You can get in the standard way! :)

^im really not worry about it. I’m just hoping i get into SBU or Union (First and second choice). Was way more dissapointed about siena, just pretty much tossed the UAB one.

Truthfully, the program at UAB seems very mediocre. The medical college is pretty low prestige wise, and they dont offer any specific service programs or internships just for attending this program.

I was offered an interview for the 2010 UAB EMSAP. The dinner they had the prior night to the interview was great since we got to meet and introduce ourselves to some of our interviewers. Good luck to those of you who have an interview.

I have declined the offer due to OOS tuition fee issues. They will not give in-state fees for the medical school. It sucks.

UAB is on the Princeton Review’s List of Best Colleges, just saying. Not only that, but the UAB Medical School has been in the Top 20 and is currently at 23 or so, I believe. It is tremendously successful. Both schools rank VERY highly among those who research these things.

Apparently, there were enough folks who did because we met candidates at the interviews who were from California, New York, Wisconsin, & Texas, as well as the closer southern states such as Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and of course, Alabama.

It was an excellent experience for my daughter. By the way her stats are similar to Frank’s below as far as the timing of the calls for invites. Her personal grades and tests: SAT–2290, Math-800, 750-Writing, 740-Reading. SAT II-Math Level 2-800; Physics-780. ACT-34 (one sitting). ACT superscore 35–English-35, Math-36, Reading-34, Science-35. PSAT-229. She has 6 AP’s with five 5’s and one 4. She is taking all AP classes this year 4 full year courses and 4 half-year courses (not sure if the micro/macro econ is one or two exams).

*By the way, she got into the EMSAP program! It’s very nice that they notify you the same day. You put down a number where you can be called between 5-9pm. Just a few minutes after 5, she was called by the director of the program and was told she was in. It was very exciting!! ♪

UAB EMSAP is very impressive! Few well designed under honor programs available! Huge and great medical facilities on campus: Children Hospital, U of A Hospital, VA Hospital and Oncology Center/Hospital. They put great focus on these elite kids and I have no doubt EMSAP students will get best education!

Looks like all they care about are stats. -_-

^agreed. Wouldnt want to be part of that class; I like the holistic programs SO much better.

The medical schools a bit disappointing too. I’m honestly surprised at how competitive the program is because i thought nobody would apply.

Yeah, me neither.

On the bright side, we won’t have to go to Birmingham for school :)

On the ‘bright side’, my kid GETS to go to school in the beautiful Deep South where guess what? IT ISN’T SNOWING. She will be mentored through a top-notch honors program as well as the EMSAP program through all 8 years of school. Plus, she has her undergrad paid for by a National Merit scholarship. We are thrilled.
The people at UAB are wonderful, highly educated, and everything you could ask for in teachers, doctors, and educators.
[I see that both of you were part of the ‘nobodies’ who applied for the program, eh?]
Seriously, I’m sure you will love wherever you end up going to school and I hope you get into the medical schools or grad schools that best fit you when it comes time for that decision down the road.
Hugs…MomToFive (of my own and a bunch more)

It’s great your kid got in. She deserved it.

I’m just not going to necessarily kick myself for not being able to go to Birmingham…

and thanks for the nobodies comment…kind of proved my point
