Good grades/test scores + decent ECs and planning to ED. I think you’re likely in although stranger things have happened.

Are you going to RD to schools like Rice, Vandy, and Ivies?

And you don’t need more than 3 letters of recommendation. So pick the teachers who will speak to your strengths.

I also go to a top 20 magnet school in Texas and a top 100 nationally ranked school if that means anything

Forgot to post SAT II’s:
Mathematics Level 2: 800
Chemistry: 770
Molecular Biology: 800
Ecological Biology: 790

I would try to visit the campus as well and communicate with your regional representative to express interest. Although ED is the ultimate way of expressing interest.

Let me know if you have questions about WashU classes. My son is a sophomore Biology major planning on pre-med (and thinking about double majoring in History and minoring in Computer Science).

Hi Hamurtle. I am planning to apply EA to Rice and RD to Vandy, Northwestern, UPenn, Cornell, Columbia, UT Austin, and Case Western. However, I visited washu and loved the campus but the only thing holding me back from applying ED is the cutthroat atmosphere.

So should I get LOR from a Math, Physics, and English Teachers? I have 3 teachers who I am very close with

I meant apply EA to Case Western due to its reputable pre med program and the fact that I have family who lives in Ohio

If you apply early to Rice you have to apply ED not EA. You should be a strong candidate for Rice RD. Depending on the cut off this year, you should be an auto admit to UT. Wash U has ED1 and added ED 2 for the first time for fall 2019 applicants. https://admissions.wustl.edu/apply_site/Pages/Early-Decision.aspx

Your stats are higher than many that have been accepted you are a top 75% applicant GREAT JOB and GOOD LUCK!

Ok thanks guys! I am still debating whether to apply ED to WashU or to apply EA to Case Western and RD to WashU, UT, Rice, Vandy, Northwestern, UPenn, Cornell, and Baylor. Any suggestions?

WashU doesn’t have a cutthroat atmosphere-more collaborative than a lot of schools of similar rank although Chemistry is considered a weed-out course.

If you EA to Case, you can do ED to WashU as well. Or any combination of EA, ED1, and ED2.

If you are considering pre-med and some of your ECs indicate this, make sure you go to a school that is affordable and does not practice grade deflation.

I am actually considering a pre-med track. However, I go to an engineering school and we have a rivalry with a school that is literally known for medicine. For example, in junior year I tried to start a premedical club, but it was rejected by my principal for reasons undisclosed. If I did hospital volunteering but like no medical clubs, will WashU take note that I didn’t really have an opportunity to participate in clubs like HOSA, etc.?

Medical shadowing without the associated clubs is fine.

My DD goes to WashU and she hasn’t said anything about a cutthroat atmosphere. Kids help out each other there.

As for your chances, your stats are better than my DD’s and she got in ED. We didn’t ask for any FA though. So with my DD, WashU was looking at an applicant guaranteed to enroll (ED applicant) which doesn’t ruin their yield, had stats (GPA and ACT) that won’t lower their average, and isn’t asking for money to attend. We stacked the odds in her favor that way. Still was a crapshoot but breathed a sigh of relief when that acceptance showed up in her portal in December.

Agree with @ChicagoSportsFn-WashU is not cutthroat and everybody helps each other out. My son’s best friends at WashU freshman year were a couple of kids in his Biology and Chemistry classes and they are in the same classes this year for CompSci, Biology 2970, and Physics.

All right thanks so much guys. However, I decided to apply RD and will not apply ED to any school, so as to give me more options in the school of my choosing.

Best course of action - to see who will give the most money!
BTW, why Wash U for Pre-Med when there are so many better schools for Medicine. Also, if you know you are going to be a Doctor, why spend so much for Undergrad instead of going to UT or Texas A&M? If you are going out of TX - would concentrate on private schools that give you tons of scholarship! Save the money for Medical degree!

WashU has a Top-10 medical school so pre-med is obviously going to be a major emphasis.

I would consider a school that will allow you to maintain as high a GPA as possible in BCPM classes. And then a school that is relatively affordable since med school is expensive. Of course as a Texas resident you have Baylor and UT medical schools which are Top-20 and extremely affordable.
