Chance Me!! I'm a Junior living in Honduras who wants to go to Andover or Choate

Hey, this is my first thread, but I really need help. Last week, I started applying to boarding school. But, I don't really know what my chances are. I'm applying to Andover (which is a huge reach, but my Math teacher's mom works there and so she put in a good word), Lawrenceville, Thacher, Cate, Choate, Lawrenceville, The Hill (I know I can get in) and Governor's Academy. Should I think about applying to Loomis Chaffe and Hotchkiss as well??

Well, here's my academic record:

8th Grade:
English: 97
Algebra 1: 92
Physical Science: 96
US History: 96
Beginners French: 95
P.E.: 91
Humanities: 92
Creative Writing: 95

9th Grade:
English 97
Geometry 1 semester: 99
Algebra 2 1 semester: 92
World History: 100 for most of the year
Earth Science: 100-97 most of the year
French: I was in Intermidiate French and received a 67, so I moved to Beginners French and got a 99% --> how bad will this look, even if I was able to keep a 94% average while having a 67% in French?
Haitian History (since I lived in Haiti): 92 for most of the year, but I did get a 83 one sememster
Health/PE: 99 or 98%

10th Grade:
*I havent gotten my progress report yet, but I think Im doing well.

Extra Curriculars/Resumee:

In 9th grade, I was a member of my previous school's Model United Nations club, in which we traveled to Champaign, Illinois to attend a conference at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. In 9th grade I was Class President. I was also a member of the Interact Program, as part of the Rotary Club. In 9th grade, 3 of my short stories were published on Teen Ink (teenink.com). During summer 2008, I attended the New York Film Academy for a 1 week Digital Filmmaking course.

I am currently a member of my school’s Model United Nations club, in which we will be attending a conference at Columbia University in New York. I am also a member of JSA (Junior States of America), where we will be traveling to DC for a conference. I am a member, as well as the treasurer, of my current school's magazine, the Kaleidoscope. I am also currently a Class Senator. I am a member of the National Honor's Society. I am taking French classes after school, as well as private tennis lessons and weekly baseball practice. From September 12th to September 20th, I was lucky enough to have a chance to be involved in a foreign exchange program, where I visited my school's sister school in Hyannis, Massachusetts for a week. I also play baseball every Saturday. I am also a member of a non-profitable charity organization that helps physically disabled children and the elderly. I recently, with the help of several friends, founded a film club at my current school. This summer, I plan to partake in the summer hire program in the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Awards and Special Recognition:

In 9th grade, my partner and I won an award for having the best science fair project in our grade (I did most of the work :P)
In 9th grade, I received a certificate of excellence in the field of English.
In 9th grade, I received an excellence award for Earth Science.
In 9th grade, I received an award of excellence in the field of World History 1.
In 9th grade, I also received an award recognizing my placement as Class President.
In 8th grade, I received an excellence award in Creative Writing.
In 8th grade, I received an excellence award for Physical Science.
In 8th grade, I received an excellence award for humanities.
In 8th grade, I received an award for my excellent work in French.

Now, I don't know if this looks good, or makes me look more unique. But, since my dad works for the State Department, we move around A LOT! I was born in El Salvador, where we lived for a while, then we moved to Nicaragua, then Nigeria, then Paraguay, then Bolivia, then Haiti, and now Im living in Honduras. PS. I hate moving!

I have one more question, how bad will my French grade look when Im applying??

Oh, I forgot to add a few things:

I’m actually scheduling an interview at Middlesex in a few weeks, since Im going to be in Boston for a foreign exchange program. And, for my French grade, I received academic probation. Is that really bad?

Oh, I forgot one more thing  I’ve started to study for the SSAT and I got an 82 on a practice test with the Princeton Review. So, I don’t really have to worry about that so much.

I forgot a few more things. In 6th and 7th grade, I learned how to play the baritone and I was in the school band. I also played a baseball from 4th to 7th grade. Oh, and I am interested in photography and film, as hobbies though.

Oh, n I’m willing to apply as a repeat sophmore if needed…I heard thats really common.

Can someone please reply??? I really want to know what my chances are. I don’t mean to boast or anything. And this isn’t a joke/fake thread. I just really need an outside opinion.

Have you written the real SSAT? Your school grades are great, one term is not going to decide whether you get in or not…
What level is your baseball at?
Your extras are interesting…

Finally!! Thank you so much for commenting on the thread. Umm, I haven’t taken the real SSAt yet, but I registered for the test for November 14, 2009. I go on the ssat.org website daily and answer the daily sample questions, if that counts for anything. And, since baseball wasn’t an in-school activity, I’d say my level is intermediate. Yeah, I guess my extra-curriculars are a little odd.

WOW dude you’re gonna get in

By interesting, I meant interesting…it is good to have different things on your application so that you are not a cookie cutter of all the other applicants.
Do well on your SSAT and essays and you should get in.
Important thing is to include a variety of schools, meaning reaches, good shots and at least one sure thing…
Good Luck!

Middlesex —> Do you really think I can get into Middlesex? Cause its on the top of my list. I actually have the interview coming up. Im so friggin nervous :S

cdnhockeymom —> Yeah, I put two safety schools, the Hill School and Governor’s Academy. I think I have a good shot in getting into Thacher and Cate. But, Andover is a huge reach. I actually began drafting essays on various of the applications, except for Andover, since the application isn’t available yet.

edited so that no one would take offense to this :)

but don’t underestimate the difficulty of getting into Thacher. D:
good luck with your middlesex interview ~

Hahahaha…niceee…

Yeah, Thacher was actually on the top of my list last year…until I discovered Middlesex  Oh, thanks. I hope I do good on the interview :)

Oh, Middlesex ----> is it true that for the Middlesex interview you are required to write an essay on the spot?

YOu should try to raise your SSAT grade to an 85% at least. But the Stats are…WHOA!!! :)

Hahaha…yeeah, I’m taking the SSAT November 14th. So, I have 2 months to raise my grade up. My grades are a little off. My Algebra 2 grade was actually an 89. Sorry for the confusion. Oh, and I took Computer Literature, and got an 87, or an 89 –> don’t recall.

But, do any of you guys know how important the Middlesex interview is? The website said its not required. It’s just that due to the Swine Flu, my school got cancelled for 2 weeks so the trip were taking to Boston might get cancelled as well. Do you know if Middlesex does phone interviews?

about Middlesex: Yes, there is an essay that you write during the interview. They give you 10 or 15 minutes and you choose one of a couple prompts to respond to. I didn’t know about the essay beforehand so it was a bit of a surprise but it wasn’t that bad.
Middlesex likes it when kids interview because they like to pick people based on who they are, not just their numbers on paper, but the school will understand if you can’t physically get to campus. I’m not sure if they do phone interviews.
pm me with more questions if you want, I’m a rising junior at mx

peab2011 ----> I wanted to attend the interview so bad!!! I think I’m gonna call to see if they do phone interviews, but I heard somewhere that they don’t :frowning: Wait, you go to Middlesex, right?? How is it?? Do you like it? Love it? Ugh, I wanna go to bad :D

peab2011 —> Do you think I should apply as a repeat sophomore for Middlesex, since getting in junior year is extremely difficult? What about for Andover?

i can tell u about mx…we’ve overenrolled sophmores here by a lot im told…im a mx soph…and i would assume it would be very hard to get in for junior year
