Senior Year: AP Calc BC, Honors Diff EQ, AP Euro, AP Lit, AP Gov, AP Econ, AP French, Honors Orchestra, Honors Adv Biotech

IMPORTANT: I went to Montessori schools through 9th grade, and when my prior school ended, I transferred into my current school for 10th grade. This means that I only had 3 years of possible commitment for school activities. It also means that I wasn't really prepared for the rigor of my current school's curriculum.

Extra Curricular Activities:

Orchestra:
11-12 Years double bass (since 1st grade) - Not applying to music school because I don't really want to only do music for the rest of my life
Will send in artistic supplement (and it will be good)
Went to Interlochen (6 week summer intensive arts program)
All-Region (and section leader) - but I've never auditioned for state (probably will this year though)
Section leader at school, also top group
I've done tons of various youth orchestras (always top group)
Probably officer position in school orchestra next year

Soph+
District Runner Up in all events in 2011-2012

Team Captain, etc
Will be recruited at some D3 schools, and possible some D1

NHS - Pretty big at our school, just a member

Knitting Club - Knits hats for kids with cancer

Environmental Club - Mainly 10th grade

Chess Club

Magic Card Game Club

National Merit Semi-Finalist (probably)
AP Scholar with Honor
High Scorer on National French Exam

Scientific Research:
Participating in a very selective(~15%) research internship program for 6 weeks this summer.
Probably will enter Siemens and/or Intel.

Essays will be good. I got an 800 on SAT writing, so yeah.

I'm also a totally normal, non disadvantaged white male. Both of my parents went to college and are now professors.

SCHOOLS - Will probably not be applying to all (or most) of these!

Where do you recommend I apply ED/SCEA/EA. Top choices are probably Columbia and Yale, but I don't want to apply early to a school where I have a huge chance of being rejected.

Also any other schools recommended?

Amherst - Likely athletic recruit
Bowdoin - Likely athletic recruit
UChicago (Brother attends)- Likely athletic recruit
Claremont McKenna- Likely athletic recruit (Chances for merit scholarship?)
Columbia
Dartmouth
Emory - athletic recruit (Chances for merit scholarship?)
Georgetown
Haverford - Likely athletic recruit
Harvard, probably SCEA (not my top choice though) - Mom attended for medical school
JHU - Likely athletic recruit
Penn
Pomona - Likely athletic recruit
USC
Stanford - Dad attended grad school. I believe Stanford counts this as legacy?
TAMU
UT
Vanderbilt
Wash U - Likely athletic recruit
Williams - Likely athletic recruit
Yale

Do u even need to ask us? I mean just read ur post. Ur application is waaaayy up there. Plus recruitment

Tell you what I’ll do: your profile is fantastic, obviously, as evidenced by the fact that even you, the student who is probably self-conscious about his chance to get into elite schools, can predict a bunch of elite LAC’s will recruit him. If you can do that, you’re probably golden. So here’s what I’m going to ask you to do: chance me first so I can get an idea of where you think most schools target their acceptances, and then I’ll chance you against your perception of the schools.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1517788-chance-johns-hopkins-ed-will-chance-back.html</a> Please include UCLA and UC Berkeley in there too.

I promise I’ll chance you back- I just wanted to make sure that your “athletic recruit” designations aren’t being delegated to schools you THINK will recruit you, but rather you can TELL will recruit you.

I think you have a shot but need to also maintain your GPA. If I were you, I would only take like 3 APs because then you would focus more on them and get 5s on them than taking the ones mentioned and getting only 4s. Other than that, I think you can get into Yale and Columbia.

Chance me!

a 3.75 GPA unW and a 3.9 W

taken several AP and honors courses throught HS (6 total)

Clubs in:
NHS(on board)
PAL (on board)
math club
bowling club
science olympiad
Red Cross(president)

on track to get gold cord for community service hrs. (total so far is like 300 and end of senior yr, most likely 450 hrs)

SAT score total: 1600

My top colleges:
UC Berkeley
USC
CSU: East Bay
California State Polytechnic University: Pomona
San Jose State University
Stanford (maybe, i dont think so, but i will try)

Uh, I’m not totally sure as nothing is really in stone. All I know if that I’ve met with and emailed with lots of different coaches at these schools. At some of them I’ve been told that I’m golden athletically and beyond golden academically (schools that have lots of influence in the admissions department).

At other schools I haven’t really heard anything about my admission, but I’ve been asked for transcripts, class schedules, etc. (Mainly top 10 LACs)

At the Ivies, I will be meeting with some coaches, but I’m a little bit off the point where I could be recruited. That could change this fall is cross country though.

@poppyoman

I need to know your home state and your SAT score breakdown to appropriately chance you!

Any opinions? I’ll try to get you back ASAP if you link me!

Most of those schools you have a very good chance at because of your excellent everything; however, as I’m sure you know, some of the ivy leagues are a crapshoot but I am positive you will get into most of them with your credentials.

Chance Me http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1526768-chances-ucb-ucla-usc-nyu-uom-uiuc-unc-ch-uva-stanford.html</a> and add duke to that list

ALSO: Weighted GPA: 5.0 is honors 100, 4.9 is honors 99, and it continues down like that. (regular 100 is 4.0, then 3.9, etc)

I don’t understand your statement, “It also means that I wasn’t really prepared for the rigor of my current school’s curriculum.” You state that you have a 3.97 UW GPA - how could you have been more prepared?

I would caution you to not confuse college coaches sending you letters and actual recruiting. Highly competitive colleges always have an abundance of applicants from elite distance runners - sprinters and throwers have much less competition and thus lower standards. The good news is that you can easily compare your times to those runners currently on the team - if yours are lower than at least half of the existing team, you will likely be recruited if the coach considers you a “fit”.

The 3.97 is the scale in which an A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc. It really shows nothing about what my actual grades were like. Most competitive applicants have a perfect 4.0 (all As).

I don’t know what I can really say about recruiting. I’m obviously aware that lots of distance runners have great academics. Despite this, based on the interest that I’m getting, I’m pretty confident some of these academically elite D3 schools will be willing to recruit me (based on my times).

I think that for all the schools that you mentioned athletic recruitment for you wouldn’t have a problem getting in academically! But just so you know, Harvard does not include grad school for legacy. I’m not certain about Stanford though. I do think that academically you are very solid and you have a good shot at these schools (if you improve your SAT I scores a bit!).

Wow, you’re really solid… just choose your top choice and apply ED/EA, you won’t have a problem. I was in the same boat as you: I transferred high schools to a much more rigorous one after my freshmen year and I ended up screwing my grades up in sophomore year, but I think I brought it back up last year and hopefully next year too. Chance me?? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1527953-ed-chances.html</a></p>

How does one get recruited? I mean which sport are you good at? Sorry,on my phone and must have missed it!
Your app looks great ! BTW. Which is your dream college?

I think you’ll get in to most of those schools that you have listed! Although, just curious, why are you retaking your SAT? It’s a really good score, and your only shot is in October if you want to do ED. Idk, maybe the pressure will get to you.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1517196-what-my-chances-ivy-leagues.html</a></p>

@Heythere7 - I do track / xc. Recruitment is kinda hard to explain. You contract coaches and based on times / test scores, you will get assistance in admission to the school. My top choices (if I only got into one of these, I would go there without regrets) are probably Yale, Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, Stanford, and Vandy.

@bonjour123 - I’m retaking the SAT because my brother got a perfect 2400, and I know I can do better than 2290. If I don’t get into my top choices not having retaken it, I will regret it when the denials come in.

Anyone else: I will chance you back if you chance me!

I have to say you are definitely going to get accepted by these schools. Ivies will reach like they always are but I have to say you have a high chance. Good job!!!

Wow. I feel dumbstruck now lol! Your app is reflective of a top 5% candidate and should definitely yield results. Maybe boost the SAT up a little bit to be more on par with the rest of your app but other than that you have a smooth road ahead of you! Ivies, once again, will be a crapshot but you still stand a better chance than most others!

Haha, thanks. I doubt it, but we’ll see. My high school is in the South, so we don’t generally have amazing acceptance rates to the Ivies, instead we do better with schools outside of the North East.

Your GPA and SAT 1 and 2s are fantastic. Your EC are nice but also seem a little all over the place…is there one in particular where u demonstrate leadership (captain/head of school club?) that can make u stand out? Your research internship will also give u a boost to the admissions committee’s eyes. THe fact that both your parents are professors will actually give u a boost in my opinion despite the fact that you are not a minority by any means.
