Chance Me! Low SAT/High ACT! (UChicago, UVA, W&M, Vanderbilt)

Ethnicity: Indian =[
Family Income: 75,000 or something like that
Financial Aid: Applying for it
Location: Live in Virginia (Mainly important for UVA and William and Mary Apps)
High School: 9-10th grade I attended a high school that was nationally renowned for difficulty of academics. Moved to another city, the new school is predominantly white, many rich kids, but mostly middle income bracket school

One kid already accepted Early Action to UChicago from my school, if that makes a difference for Chicago

SAT: 650 Reading, 720 Math, 610 Writing
SAT II: 720 Physics, 670 Math II
ACT: 32 Composite, 29 Reading, 35 English, 33 Math, 32 Science, 31 English/Writing

GPA (Without Senior Year): Unweighted 3.77, Weighted 3.98 (Only AP Classes weighted)
GPA (Extrapolated Semester Grades of Senior Year): Unweighted 3.80, Weighted 4.__

Class Rank (Without Senior Year): 50/300ish
Class Rank (Extrapolated Semester Grades of Senior Year): 1/300ish (All 4.0+ is rank 1)

AP Classes:
Junior Year: 3 English Language, 4 US History, 4 Physics B, 5 Calculus AB
Senior Year: Biology, Statistics, English Literature, US Government, Computer Science A

Grades:
All A's in my junior year, most likely in senior year as well.
I improved my grades since 7th grade (took algebra and language classes in middle school)

Extracurriculars/Other Stuff:
-Latin Club (Officer position)
-Math Honor Society (Student Founder and Anticipated President; Initiation mid January)
-Volunteering for 100ish hours at local hospital
-UPenn Experimental Physics Academy: July 2010, 35 hours a week for 4 weeks
-Varsity Academic Team: Only this year though, for fun. Didn't really mention it in my app
-Varsity Track and Field: Junior year, will do this year as well

Other Honors and Stuff:
-Spanish Honor Society
-Beta Club (Idk what this is to be honest... Some honor society or something)
-National Honor Society
-AP Scholar with Honor

Recommendations:

Main Teacher Recommendations:
-AP Calculus teacher; strictly academic, extremely good at what it wishes to present
-AP Language teacher; more about personality (I have no idea what she wrote to be honest... It was a risk)

Supplementary Recommendations:
-Sponsor of Math Honor Society (Going to send along with Midyear Report); Explain my role in the process of creating the chapter at my school, Expecting it to be very good
-UPenn Physics Professor; Talk about what I did there, and stuff like that, good as well

Applying to College of Arts and Sciences to all of the schools

Ermm... I think that's it..? Chance me PLEASE!
UChicago, UVA, William and Mary, Vanderbilt

Oh, and I have had only A’s and B’s. I had B’s in english classes in 9th and 10th grade. B’s in both semesters of geometry, 1 semester of algebra 1, 1 semester of 9th grade biology, and 1 semester of world history part 2.

UVA, UChicago, and Vanderbilt are going to be a tough, but W&M should be fine. Most schools are starting to loosen up on the weight of SATs, so your scores aren’t going to kill your chances, but it’s does make you less competitive than other students with your same creds and a 2000 or better.

Your in at UVA. William & Mary is tough for anyone.

UChicago: I honestly hate this school due to its tendency to only accept students for their money… I think you’re in.
UVA: possibly… their racial quotas are pretty rough from what I hear…
W&M: In. @undertheskyline: William and Mary is tough? People at my school use it as a safety school. Ah well…
Vanderbilt: not sure about this one. Don’t know much about it.

Good luck dude!

Chicago, Vanderbilt, W&M are all tough admits. UVirginia more of a match. W&M (along with W&L) have the lowest admit rates/highest SAT scores in VA.

Sorry, but Chicago is almost impossible with those scores. Vanderbilt is a low reach. Virginia is a match-high match.

All are reaches except for UVA.

As long as I get into one of them, I guess I’ll be happy. I’m mostly worried about going to Chicago, cause I hear it’s killer… But thanks for the chances guys! What do you think my chances of getting into at least one of them is though? I would feel comfortable going to any, just wanna know my chances of going to one of them =]

Again, thanks for the help!

Oh, and you know how colleges say that they look at the best scores? Is that actually true…? From the looks of it, you are all saying that my SAT score WILL hinder my chances, even though a 32 on the ACT is relatively average for those schools.

I say you’re good for W&M and UVA. Vanderbilt and UChivago are tough for everyone. From what I understand, Vanderbilt in particular is getting more and more NE applicants and so is getting more selective every year. Hard to predict how it will be this year.

Aren’t they also seeking diversity? And I’m Indian. That’s probably bad for the other colleges, but maybe for Vandie, it’s a good thing… Vanderbilt isn’t my top choice of the 4, so I wouldn’t be sad if I don’t go there or anything. Very similar to UVA I heard, and I lived in Cville for 10 years, so I LOVE UVA. =P

Bump

I just wanna know if the whole “we look at the best score” thing really applies. My ACT score definitely competes with other applicants, but not my SAT score. Will they say “his ACT is 32, good,” or do they say “Good ACT, but wow, that SAT…”?

Nah, Vandy has plenty of Indians
