Chance me for Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Tufts, University of California-Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, University of Maryland, and University of Virginia.

Welcome to CC! Where the extraordinary are ordinary, the overachieving come standard, and incredulously amazing profiles come standard. Yes, I’m exaggerating, but only by a little, whether that’s a good thing or not. So then…

Your test scores leave something to be desired. Your academics are rather nasty too. You are black, and hence a URM (Under-Represented Minority), but honestly that won’t help you too much with the weak profile you already have. I’d say Columbia, Cornell, MIT are all out of reach. Maybe I’m underestimating the effect of the URM, but seriously, those are probably not the best schools to apply to, especially given your low rank. Tufts, UVA, and UC Berkeley are all reaches of some sort. I can’t say much about the rest, but I’m assuming the University of Maryland is your safety. If I were you, I’d aim lower. Sorry.

My sincere apologies if I appear demeaning. As a fellow senior (Asian) and class of 2011’er myself, I have a pessimistic tendency, so really, just wait for other opinions. I’m not the most qualified or well-informed, so even I am wary of what I put down. I wish you the best.

Eh. Other opinions will probably be similar. My only problem is that I’ve been listening to my mother for way too long. She keeps telling me, “You can get into MIT!”. Part of me knew that it was BS but I didn’t want to accept it I suppose.

She’s going to be really angry with me when I tell her that I want to apply to schools that are actually within my range.
