@Gumbymom I am from California, or else I would probably not apply.
Here is my UC GPA: it appears I have a 4.14 Weighted and Capped. My SLO GPA is terrible it is a 3.85 (I got all B’s freshman year semester 1)
Will my Upward Trend help me for USC and CSU’s and UCs? I have my W GPA’s listed above but in terms of my UW I went from a 3.45 Freshman year to a 3.71 to a 4.0 Junior Year to a 4.0 Senior Year.
USC: Slavic Studies
UCSD: Environment
UCI: Environment
I am Russian and am very interested in Slavic Studies. I also feel like I have good business acumen, but not sure if I want to study Business or Econ in college.
Although your SLO GPA is lower than average, your SAT/ACT scores make up for it.
SLO is a Match if you are going for an Environmental major.
UCI: Match
UCSD/USC: High Match
I do not see a Safety school on your list. I am sure you will get into several schools, but with the competition these days, it is always good to have a safety…
@Gumbymom My list for California schools or in general? I have been told UDub and and couple others are safeties. If I don’t send in my ACT and just my SAT (Which is a 34 on the ACT when you convert scores) Will I get into match range for USC? Ideally if I get rejected from NYU LSP London ED I want t go to USC. What is a High match considered in terms of percent chance of getting in? I would assume a match would be 60% or better.
Since UDub and the other schools are OOS, are they more affordable than the UC’s?
Safeties need to be affordable first and most OOS public schools are not as affordable as in-state schools. I do not know your financial situation, so just asking.
I put USC in the High Match category due to your Freshman year grades, but an upward grade trend and competitive test scores make you a good candidate.
Before making this thread I was thinking this:
NYU LSP London- Match
Tulane EA- Match
U Michigan Ann Arbor Match- Reach (B/C OOS)
UT Austin Match- Reach (B/C OOS)
UCSD- Match
UCI Match
Cal Poly SLO (Enivroment) Reach (B/C of GPA)
USC Match-Reach (Somewhere in the middle)
Bowdoin Reach
Amherst Reach
UIUC Safety
University of Virgina Match- Reach (B/C OOS)
UDub Safety
I guess match- reach is a high match?
I wanted to have a couple safety and the majority matches or high matches. I applied to a couple reaches because my parent forced me to (They both went to Amherst and Bowdoin)
@Gumbymom Affordability isn’t a huge deal for me as my parents have been saving before I was born and according to them I have enough to get through all 4 years of college debt free, at any university. My Guidance Counselor informed me that my school has a good reputation with USC (last year 60 percent of the applicants got in) he said although I did poorly freshman year I did a pretty good job making up for it Sophomore/Junior year which would be weighted more heavily than Freshman year, he told me USC was a target and I had a pretty good chance at being admitted. One thing I want to do at UDub is the Foster School of Business, its one of the best in the US for undergrads, and I love Seattle so I would be happy going there. (The good football team is a plus as well :D)
– Also could you provide me with USC’s Middle 50 percent for SAT/ACT Scores and GPA (UW/W) I can’t seem to find it.
SLO admits by MCA score and major. GPA and test scores are the most important component in calculating your MCA so a slightly lower GPA can be made up with higher test scores. Also the Environmental majors acceptance rates can range from 45% to almost 100% depending which specific major so that is why I put it as a Match school. If you were applying for CS which has around a 10% acceptance rate then I would say it would be a Reach based on GPA.
Yeah, I assumed I shouldn’t even apply to Cal Poly because of my GPA and the fact that I might want to switch my major and my GC said that its a whole 'nother process, but didn’t explain it to me I have been searching online- can’t seem to find it.
@Gumbymom Wow guess my GC doesn’t really know as much as I thought about SLO hehe. Anyway looking at USCs freshman profile it seems like my GPA is what the average USC student has and My SAT higher than the 75th percentile? I am not sure how much this matters but I am 50% white (My mother being Russian) and 50% African American. I am also a first gen college student. Another thing to add on is several kids from my school are going to be applying to USC, will this affect me in anyway?
You should be reviewed based on your own merits and not be compared to your other classmates. Many schools will have multiple applicants from the same school so I would not worry. Good luck and hope you have many choices in the spring.
