Chance me UGA, University of Florida, University of Miami, Clemson

current senior- GPA: UW 3.3, W 3.8, UGA GPA: 3.5
ACT composite: 28 Superscore: 30
6 AP courses and many honors classes by graduation.
Go to a prestigious private school in Ga (idk if that helps).
applying to UGA regular decision and University of Miami EA
Good essays and lots of service/extra curriculars.
Thanks.

UF is tricky but I’d say you have a decent shot. Act and Gpa on lower side but if ECs are as good as you say then you have a chance. Miami superscores so that helps but gpa is still slightly low. Not sure about other two.

Are those the only schools that you’re applying to? Your UW grades may be an issue.

UF will be expensive OOS. Will your parents pay the OOS costs? If so, then super. If they won’t, then the school won’t be affordable.

Do you qualify for HOPE for UGA? UGA is getting harder to get into. What school is your safety? Affordable and a school that you will get accepted.

Your stats are low for UGA, although admission isn’t impossible, especially if you’re a minority student. You were smart to wait for regular decision so your essays will be a factor. Good luck!!

UF (aside from being expensive OOS) will be a stretch. The average GPA last admissions cycle was 4.2-ish (reciting from memory after attending Preview). If you have strong ECs and a great essay that might help.

Don’t know much about UM or GA, sorry.

If you have Hope scholarship why not look hard in GA?

Clemson will also be VERY expensive OOS

Yes Clemson is $$$ even with scholarships.

UF only has around 3% out of state students. I think there are very limited spots for out of state students.

UGA is a maybe. They superscore the ACT, and unlike EA, RD is holistic. Your GPA is a bit of a concern though. Clemson will take you, but you’ll pay big time. If UGA is a miss, you could head to GA Southern, GCSU, GSU, etc. and then transfer to UGA no problem. That way you could use HOPE all the way through.

@Proudpatriot that is not true. Although there are about 3% attending, acceptance rate for OOS students is nearly the same as in-state. It just happens UF is very expensive and does not like to give scholarships to OOS students so many do not attend who are accepted.

I seem to recall that there was some talk of the Board of Governors limiting OOS acceptances. At any rate as a resident I am ok with UF not giving scholarships to a ton of OOS students. Keep the money in state. We have enough deserving in state students.

@Proudpatriot According to their annual report, last year around 6800 OOS students applied with a little over 3,000 getting accepted. Only 800 enrolled, so it is more of the money factor than not accepting the OOS students. I have also heard President Fuchs wants to start expanding the # of OOS students to diverse the population.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate it.

A little OT but I don’t think UF needs to “diversify” by going OOS. There are plenty of smart in-state kids who get rejected from UF. As a state resident I would much rather see those spots going to in-state kids. I am a strong believer in strong public universities and an even bigger believer in those universities serving in-state kids even if it costs money.

BTW-I put diversify in quotes because FL is already a diverse state. I think diversify is code for bringing in money.

@Proudpatriot I completely agree with the fact of diversifying equaling bringing in money, but as an OOS resident who has many ties to the University, I believe around 1,000 students from OOS enrolling each year is fine. It is a huge University and those spots will not take away from in-state students. If the OOS applicants ate qualified, I do not see the issue, as if you’re not qualified in state you won’t get in, regardless of how many OOS are accepted.

UF’s a low reach based on your GPA, which is important at UF (more so than test scores). While your GPA is still a little bit low, FSU may be a better fit, as FSU will superscore your ACT, and a 30 may be high enough to get an OOS state tuition waiver (in-state tuition is around $6K a year).

Based on the fall 2015 numbers, 8% of UF’s undergraduates are OOS, another 4% are international. UF does want to increase the OOS %, but they are not going to do it via merit scholarships. They are hiring more regional recruiters, so I would think it will grow a few % points over the next few years.

UF is a stretch but not impossible. Miami is a little more of a stretch, but not completely out of reach.

thanks for the replies.
@mom2collegekids Fortunately for me money is not an issue. I do qualify for HOPE, and I believe Clemson and Texas a and m are safeties for me. Btw I applied to University of Miami, Georgia, Florida, Clemson, Rhodes College, University of Rochester (a lot of family legacy), Wake Forest ED (deferred), texas a and m, Tulane, Elon
