Chancellor's Scholarship 2015

Dd received her letter today too - OOS, engineering and so it goes. (On the bright side, living off campus and getting off meal plan is something alot of Pitt students look forward to so not getting selected definately has it’s pluses - or at least that’s my story and I’m sticking with it!) Good luck to the remaining candidates!

@amandakayak, thanks for the upside. OOS Eng D received her letter also :frowning:

I just looked at the list of past Chancellor scholars, in the last two years their major was mostly undeclared

During the time my daughter had gotten the invite to apply for Chancellor’s, she was extremely busy, so really only could focus on her essays in the span of one week. It would make me sad to think that these essays didn’t really factor into the selection process.

The year I was a freshman we had 10 (IIRC) Chancellor’s scholars. One was an engineering major…but he switched to A&S (Math) after one semester. For the next 3 years (maybe 4) not a single Chancellor’s Scholar was an Engineering major.

I love the UHC, but the SSOE students are shafted so hard by the program (in a variety of ways I won’t get into) that it makes me angry. Sorry to those of you who got your no-interview letter. Good luck to the rest!

When you look at the scholars from 2010, some of which have already earned degrees, many of them have double or triple majors, and Bphil. Is that the focus of this scholarship, to help top students to be able to major in these disciplines? And do they think that a narrowly focused major like engineering, pharmacy won’t be suitable to such a program?

@AwesomeOpossum, I would like to hear your opinion on how “students are shafted”. If you have already discussed this please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Could anyone who’s had experience with the Chancellor’s interview advise on appropriate attire for males? In particular, is a shirt and tie advisable? Thanks.

My Daughter is interviewing for the Scholarship soon. I think she is quite impressive, though looks to be in line with everyone else. Not sure why they choose who they do, but I am happy they chose her. We are OOS, pre-med.

I may have mentioned it at some point in the (admittedly very large/lengthy) Rising Pitt Senior thread. If you don’t see anything in there, feel free to PM me and I can discuss it with you.

My S has not interviewed yet, but he’s going to wear a sport coat and tie. It’s a nice honor to be invited, and important to look presentable (IMHO).

@enjoytheday, thanks for weighing in on the attire. You are right, it’s an honor to be invited and dressing to acknowledge this would be nice. Now I just need to educate my son on these social norms :wink: Good luck to your son on his interview.

My son submitted Chancellor’s application on Dec 7, the status still shows ‘waiting for transcript and rec letters’ which never changed as of today. Per FAQ, they will request them if the materials are incomplete. To our knowledge, teachers and school already sent them. Per FAQ, it can take up 8 weeks to show the real status, so I believed them. It seems to me the committee might not even review my son’s materials. Isn’t it reasonable to say that the students who have not received any interview notifications are considered as a rejection to the scholarship?

@Putterer, good luck to your son too. By the way, my son would rather wear an untucked shirt vs. coat and tie, but he’s coming around the more interviews he does.

@PADad7777, sorry as that sounds frustrating not to have a status update. My S’s notification was on Feb 2 via email; maybe they are doing notifications in waves?

Has anyone heard one way or the other in the last week? My daughter was offered a full tuition scholarship and invited to apply, due date was mid-December. She has not heard either way yet. Her application still says “Being Reviewed”.

Same here - my daughter also got the full tuition scholarship and hasn’t heard either way on Chancellor’s yet. Hoping they are just doing this in waves and they aren’t done yet.

fwiw - they did decide in waves in past years so good luck!

just curisou – does Pitts pa those who have been invited for interviews,

sorry for typo. Just curious – does Pitts pay for the interview trip (such as hotel etc)?

@PADad7777‌
I don’t think they are paying for most people this year. How far away are you coming from? You could phone and ask if you think your trip will cost significantly more than anyone else’s. I know mine will be pretty expensive.

@PADad7777‌ and @Packrat5000‌,

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer travel reimbursements for the Chancellor Scholar interviews. But if you do have questions about the interview process, you can call the University Honors College and they will be happy to assist you: 412-624-6880.

You can also get information from our site to plan your visit (lodging, directions, parking, etc): oafa.pitt.edu/visit/

Best of luck!
