Chancellor's Scholarship

Do you think throwing in the fact that I played clarinet for sara palin's open house is a good idea? i think it sounds kinda special but i'm not really sure.

I think i'm just gonna call my application good since I'm going kinda crazy. I just ran around the house half yelling half singing "envelopes, envelopes, envelopes, envelopes." it's generally bad when you are that excited about finding the envelopes in your house.

Anybody want to post on what the interview was like? thanks =).

Anyone who has recently received a letter from Pitt regarding the interview want to write when they sent it in??

I'm not sure if I should apply for the chancellor's scholarship? I received a $10,000 per scholarship, as well as the opportunity to apply for the chancellor's. I am wondering if I really have a chance though...
here are my stats
31 ACT
3.6 GPA
11 AP's
Great Extracurriculars/leadership/internships
Great Recs
My ACT is low, and I am thinking this will automatically bring me out of the running.

Didn't get it. Oh well.

anas12, if you don't try, you'll never know will you? But you better get moving because the clock is ticking. You have just two weeks to write those essays, right?

Congrats on your $10,000/yr scholarship. Obviously, there must be something about you that Pitt likes! My son got one of those scholarships as well.

For those of you who have already been asked to interview for the Chancellor's Scholarship - would you mind sharing what was the initial amount that Pitt offered you ($10,000, full tuition, etc.)?

This may have already been addressed, but how were you contacted if you received an interview or not? Was it via e-mail or mail?

received both an email and snail mail. Also, son received full tuition scholarship prior to being invited to apply for the chancellors.

DD is not going to bother. Can't say I blame her. She has fabulous GPA and SAT's, but only regular EC's and absolutely ZERO leadership. (She couldn't get into NHS because of that!) So she really doesn't have a chance at it anyway. Also, aside from not wanting to do those nasty essays, she also doesn't want to ask her teachers for more recommendations because her chem teacher announced he was "done". (DD is a very shy non-aggressive type.) All in all not worth it for the ultra-slim chance of her getting the scholarship.

Ok, usually I don't post on CC but since I am the first one to have done the interview I decided I would. I don't want to give you any specific hints on the interview for two reasons. First, I suspect that the style depends a lot on who you get as your interviewers and how you approach it. Second, I am obviously competing with you.

What I will tell is this. The interview is fairly informal and has a quite intellectual flavor. If you did not enjoy writing the essays at some level you may struggle with it.

Logistically speaking, when you first come to the receptionist you go to talk with students for 15 minutes to make you less nervous for the interview. The interview went longer for me than the 1 hour allotted to it so you might want to try to get the last interview of the day so that your time is not cut off by the next scheduled interview.

As far as everyone's theories go about full tuition/$10,000 scholarships go I doubt they are true. Dr. Stewart asked me if I had been awarded a scholarship yet during the interview which indicates that honors college has nothing to do with those awards. I also got the impression that the essays were probably the single most important part of the application.
Therefore, I wouldn't say that receiving a lesser scholarship will mean you are less likely to get the award.

I really think stats don't matter nearly as much as you think but here are mine

SAT: 2270 (1540)
GPA: 98.10
Out of State
10 AP's (five this year, five 5's sophomore and junior years)
Essays (good I thought)
Recs (fairly good)

Good luck to everyone else with your interviews.

Agh maybe that's why I didn't get offered an interview...I scribbled my essays the day it was due for postmarking. (Similar stats to you ^)

Still no word. =\ Hopefully I'll hear by next week. This wait is killing me! Honestly, I don't even care if I get an interview or not; I just want to know if I did or didn't!

With regards to my essays, I think two of them were pretty good, and the third one was fairly mediocre.

does anybody know if we can have a guidance counselor do one of the two recs and have a teacher do the other?

thanks!

update: that is fine.

i just got my letter 2 days ago. I know I should do the app, but it's hard to get more motivation since I thought I was done with apps and Pitt isn't my 1st choice... I don't think I would if i'd gotten the full, but I only got the 10,000.... I think my app essay was weak- I sent a different essay then most other places and before it was finished because I had rolling admissions in mind. I guess i should get to work on this one, and write good essays. i actually like the topics muhc better than all of the questions I've had to answer that try to make me define myself.

Son received $10K and $2K from Engineering per year x4. Invited to apply to Chancellor's and that was before Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, they sent him a Tee. What should he make of this? Anyone else receive a Tee?

Last year, they sent t-shirts, calendar, magnets and decals.

Sounds like it means they have less money!

In all seriousness I believe it means nothing more than they want you to go there. I got a t-shirt a week before getting turned down for the interview. I don't think it's even organized by the same people.
