Applying to engineering as white male. Father went to Pitt

2.8 weighted GPA (I know it's bad, but I have a 4.8 senior year and 3.6 junior year) 11 honors/AP classes. In AP Classes I average an A (taken 5)
1900 sat score
1300 sat M+CR

Neither of these schools look at anything else besides GPA and sat scores. So please give me my chances. Thanks a lot

While your gpa is low, everything else looks great. Also, your transcript would show a positive trend which is always a good thing. Since you can’t do much about your gpa, I’d just try to convey a passion for engineering and perhaps an explanation of why your gpa was low in your essays and application. I wish you the best of luck!

Ehh…It’s a bit of a reach for both (Penn State more than Pitt) but your test scores aren’t bad and the super upward trend might be enough to get you in.

SAT score is good but GPA is low. For Pitt do yourself a favor and take advantage of the optional essay and recommendation letters. If they’re both really good you have a chance at Pitt w/ the upward trending grades plus legacy status. I got in with a 3.2 GPA
Pitt: High Match
Penn State: Low Reach (test scores are in range but GPA is really low for their standards)

You have a modest chance at getting into the main campuses, but you could easily go to a branch school. I believe Penn State Behrend is particularly good for engineering.

No problem! I’m actually going to copy this for reposting. Here’s the written version of each percentage (just cause it’s funnier):

Far Reach- lolwut?
Reach- Ivy problems
Low Reach- Probably not going to happen, but worth a shot!
High Match- You fit academically; however, you’ll be challenged with admissions
Match- Perfection
Low Match- If you get rejected you are entitled to be confused
Safety- If you don’t get in I will bust down the admission’s office door with a tank to demand an answer
