im back and am very disappointed that i only raised my SAT score by 20 pts to get it up to a sad 1100... my gpa is at about 4.7 weighted and 3.5 unweighted.. i have hundreds of community service hours, i have positions in NHS, forensics club, i made it into the state competition for FBLA and debate this yr alone...
i am in IB and have all AP/IB classes this yr as a junior..i play badminton, swimming, water polo, bowling... i tutor at local elem. schools and also for the NHS...

cornell- almost no chance
UF- fair chance instate, pretty low chance out of state

.. I would pick more safety/matches, however nothing is impossible- if your essay was superb then that could increase your chances pretty dramatically.

Since UF places so much importance on test scores, I'd say you don't have a great chance there even if you are in state. I agree with aselig, you need more schools you can call matches and a couple safeties. Since you're a junior, you still have time to get those scores up, try prepping for SAT more and do the same for the ACT. Some strong SAT IIs might help also. What do you plan to major in?

Your chances of admission to UF are good if you are an IB Diploma candidate, especially if you are attending a school that has a strong IB program. UF advertises itself as having more IB diploma holders than any other college in the world. They also love leadership and, as with almost every school, will admit a student with a proven passion for a subject. Be sure to make good use of your summer to show UF that you are serious and even more importantly apply to UF using either their Early Decision (if admitted you must attend) or Regular Decision I (early notification, not required to attend). Be prepared to have everything in by Oct. 15th including letters of recommendation. How about asking teachers to write them now? Remember to write thank you notes to those teachers. Most teachers want your resume in order to write their letter. And don't forget about your Guidance Counselor.

Cornell is a "long reach" for you, but if you have something special in your resume you may still want to apply.

30+ ACT, 1400+ SAT (2100 new). Cornell might be a realistic reach depending on which college and major you apply for. Do you know what you might want to major in? Are you in state for FL?

you have to work on that sat score. Maybe you should try the ACT. I have a friend who made a 1250 on the sati and a 34 on the act, so he's using his act score. Keep working on those grades as well. I'm appyling to cornell this year. I have a 1490 and a 3.71 uwgpa and 4.4 weighted. My school is highly competitive and I have a lot of AP courses. I've done leadership stuff as well as volunteering and summer research internships. WIth that said, I'm still SCARED to death because I know I won't hold a candleliht to some of those biatches out there. The GOOD news is, you're only a junior, plenty of chances. I wish you the bestest luck! :)

yeah i see that as my only real downfall.. which is quite a big one but i will have to work hard in order to improve it... so a 30 would be a good ACT score in order to consider cornell? thanks alot guys

I got an 1180 my first time on the SAT but I got a 30 on the ACT. That score puts me near the top of the mid range at Cornell. I still retook the SAT two more times and I reccomend you do the same, with a lot of prep.

I suggest applying to the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for premed but not the ultra competitive biology major. You're going to need to get some more ECs, especially science related ones and achieve an upward trend in GPA if you want a shot. If not, UF would be a good bet especially with the IB diploma.

uh, dont doubt your acceptance to UF. I'd bet plenty of money that you get accepted. Contrary to what FishS said, UF does NOT place an exceptional amount of weight on SAT scores, and graduating from IB with a 3.5 UW (which would be around 4.1 according to UF's scale) will get you in no matter what. I live in Gainesville and know UF and the admissions process there like the back of my hand, my bro got in w/ 1 EC (spanish club) and a 3.03 in IB.

"UF does NOT place an exceptional amount of weight on SAT scores"

I think one could make the case that they do. I've seen plenty of kids from my school turned down with their only downfall being SAT scores. I'm only stating this from what I've seen.

"graduating from IB with a 3.5 UW (which would be around 4.1 according to UF's scale) will get you in no matter what."

Excuse me? No matter what? Please don't make such all knowing sounding statements.
I did not at first see that he was IB and I did correct myself afterwards and said he has a very good chance with it.

fish did u study alot for the SAT? and also what caused you to score so high on the ACT? alot more studying? please let me know because i am scared to death and nervous

I did take a prep course and I feel it had little affect on my score. If I was more dedicated to prepping, I think I could have gotten well into the 1300s tho. What is more important than taking a course is reviewing the types of questions they ask and doing practice tests. Get the book "10 Real SATs". I think taking the SAT well into your senior year will also help.

My problem was, I'm weak in math. Although I got 700s on verbal, my math lagged behind. Most people don't have this problem and both should go up at the same time. However, the ACT math section is only 1/4 of the test, whereas it is 1/2 of the SAT. Since I'm strong in english and science and found the ACT math easier(SOH CAH TOA), I did quite well. In my opinion, the ACT score goes up more dramatically with practice than SAT. I'd suggest taking it 3 times and purchasing the book "Getting into the ACT".

Keep in mind that UFs SAT average is 1340 and Cornell's is in the 1400 area...and if you want a shot at Cornell you will need something to set you apart from other applicants. Feel free to pm me.
