Chances at University of Chicago? U of I Urbana-Champaign?

I'm a junior in high school currently. I just took the ACT this week so I don't have my scores yet but my highest practice was a 31. Last semester I had a 4.0 GPA but it's looking like I'm going to have a 3.8 this semester (both unweighted).
Extracurriculars: (years as of this coming fall)
Debate team (3 years)
NHS (1 year, only for seniors)
Literary magazine (4 years)
Best Buddies (an organization that pairs students up with students with disabilities, 4 years)
Academic team (1 year)
Track and field (shot put/discus, 4 years)
I'm also volunteering at a pediatric occupational therapy place this summer and next year since that's what I plan to go into.
By the end of next year I will have taken 8 AP classes.

I would say that both are reaches, but I don’t have your ACT score, so I really can’t say.

Why would you say they are both reaches, @Hawkace‌?

Because he has not heard of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before. Obviously it is not a reach, but a match. University of Chicago is obviously a reach. I do think you have a good chance on it, however if you score well on the ACT/SAT. Good luck!

Get at least a 34+ ACT or 1500+ SAT (CR+M) to be competitive for UofC. Your EC’s are pretty good, but definitely not jaw-dropping for a place like UChicago. I’d put it at mid/high-reach for you. I think you’re in at UIUC.

Yeah, I meant the reach was for UofC. It is a low reach for UIUC

@Hawkace
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has a 63% acceptance rate.

@wannabefeynman‌ Giving someone a guaranteed acceptance is never a good thing. It’s a match-low reach.

@Hawkace‌
Hm? When did I mention “guaranteed admission?” I said it was a match. I think you misread the original post, because that person has a 3.8 GPA and an approximate score of 31 on the ACT.

Where is your home state and what is your intended major?
If you are in state, UIUC should be a match to low match for LAS and very high match for engineering. For oos, UIUC would be a high match to low reach for LAS and a reach for engineering. Note that the admission rate is high for in state but much lower for oos.

@bilcsho
Don’t they say that “Out-of-state students are evaluated against the same criteria used for in-state students.?”

@billcsho‌ I’m in-state

Thanks @wannabefeynman‌!

@wannabefeynman‌

That is the common tactic all public schools use. I have heard that from UMich too. It is a misleading information trying to attract more students to apply. Students are evaluated against the same criteria but still not the same admission rate. Basically, they will still evaluate your GPA, course rigor, scores, EC, etc, so the same set of criteria. They are not saying they have the same admission rate or admission stat. The higher admission rate for in state students is very reasonable. Not only they have the obligation to provide higher education for in state students, the yield rate for in state admitted students are always much higher too. Particularly for UIUC where financial aid for oos students is so poor.

u of chicago is a reach, and if you did get in, you most likely would not receive much if any merit scholarships. but urbana champaign is a perfect match

Official ACT score: 33

With a 33, UIUC is a match, UChicago is a reach.
