Chances at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor?

I’m just curious to see my chances at the University of Michigan, so here are my stats and activities:

1440 SAT (First time, retaking again in June and October)

780 on Math
660 on EBRW (working on bringing this up)

4.3 GPA WEIGHTED, around 3.8 GPA unweighted. I got quite a few Bs my freshman year, but only 1 B per semester my sophomore year & first semester junior year (my second semester is not over yet but I have a great shot at getting no Bs)

Junior Year Course Load:

AP Chemistry
Physics Honors
Spanish 3 HONORS
Pre-Calculus HONORS
AP English Language
AP US Government 1ST SEMESTER
AP Psychology 2ND SEMESTER

Senior year course load for next year:

AP Calculus BC
AP Biology
AP European History
AP Spanish Language
AP Physics C: Mechanics
Regular English course

I also took AP US History my sophomore year (As both semesters) and honors math, english, chemistry.

EXTRACURRICULARS:

Spanish tutor and math tutor

NHS

Peer leading through school program dedicated to working with students to keep a safe school

Peer freshman leader for freshmen orientation and their first day of school (junior and now senior year)

Research Club- researching lime peels ability to remove Lead (II) ions from solution.

VICE PRESIDENT OF RESEARCH CLUB FOR NEXT YEAR

Summer lifeguard job

Although I got a mix of As and Bs freshman year, since I had an upward trend with my grades in increasingly harder classes, will this help my case? (Also, I have taken the hardest rigor I possibly could). When taking everything into account, where do I stand at chances of being admitted, and will my senior year grades help me as well? Thank you!

also could someone please help me move this to a different forum?

First, while class rigor is important, UMich doesn’t use weighted GPA’s.

Are you applying EA or RD?

Are you in-state or OOS? Class of 2023 stats aren’t available yet, but the in-state acceptance rate was 41% for the Class of 2022. OOS acceptance rate was 19%.

Also, what college within UMich (Ross, CoE, LSA, Kinesiology, Nursing, SMTD, STAMPS, etc.)?

No, if you’re applying EA and accepted. Yes, if you’re applying EA and are deferred and UMich requests senior year grade updates and/or you send a LOCI. Yes, if you’re applying RD by February 1st and have your senior year fall semester grades available. Yes, if you’re waitlisted and your grades are available and UMich requests an update and/or you send a LOCI.

i will be applying RD. my senior year 1st semester grades will be available by then.

LSA, as a chemistry major.

R u instate?

I wouldn’t worry about your freshman year. Lots of students need that adjustment. You seem to be doing all the right things. Work on your essays this summer. Make them interesting, personal and unique.

Why not EA? Nothing says I want to go here like EA.

I agree with @Knowsstuff With a 3.8 unweighted, you likely will need that demonstrated interest component to your application. EA coupled with campus visits will convey that.

One thing to note especially if you are in-state is where you rank among your class. While they do not specifically define student rank as a factor, they will start at the top of your class (all factors being equal), look at who is applying and make offers going down the list until they hit their target number of offers from your school.

A 3.8 UW at one high school is not the same as a 3.8 UW at another.

No matter what, your grades and class load ARE impressive. You should be very proud of your accomplishments. Good luck as you start the college admission process.

I don’t know if they literally take the highest person rank and work down from there. But will review the application holistically non the less.

@knowstuff Right. But if two equally qualified holistic candidates from the same school are being considered for one spot within the same program at UM, the one with the higher gpa/rank will most likely be the one to earn the admission spot. Sometimes the toughest competition is among your own school’s peers if your HS is a competitive-one.

Yes you are compared to your own high school and why naviance or the like is important to look at. Every year though someone gets in with lower stats etc due to holistic reviews

Yes, it is important if you are instate or not. I know two top stats kids who were deferred this year and the year before, as well as a bunch of them who were deferred several years ago for EA. My friend’s son was one of them, and she is from Michigan, but has been living here in NY for a number of years. All of the top kids from her old neighborhoods were accepted to UM EA, but not the case here.

For some crazy reason that is totally beyond me, some kids here were accepted EA. My kid was one of them; I know of a few others through hearsay, and they did not have the stats of the ones who were deferred. It was a crusher for a number of the deferred kids because they had paired the UM app with a very slim chance SCEA one, and were deferred from both. I know two of the kids were accepted RD, but no idea about the rest.

Here are the stats from the 2/1/19 RD wave, which is what I would shoot for (or better), if I were applying RD:

Of course, for the December EA release, the stats were much higher. If you’re in-state, which we don’t know, then the averages were lower than outlined above. Also, the subsequent waves were slightly lower.

Are these stats engineering heavy? They seem to match their stats @sushiritto

CoE = 7
LSA (or Unidentified) = 37

In-state = 4
OOS (or Unidentified) = 40

Very few were unidentified. As I always say, CC is a small sample size that weights heavily towards students with high stats. So, we have to be careful with them (stats).

But the stats were higher than the Class of 2022.
