Chances for hispanic texan girl?

I don't have any problem with him- I hope I haven't come across as that. And his chances are fine with or without URM. I'm just addressing the issue that was brought up.

lol we totally turned j07's innocent chances thread into this whole big issue. =)

totally agree :D

for example, some people can't have the same opportunities to intern in surgery like i do, because they don't have the resources or don't know how to get one. Because of the school I go to, my internships are THROWN at me; my teacher finds them for me, sets them up, etc.

Actually it would be better to get rid of opportunities like these (no offense to the poster), because when a select few non-minorities have these advantages, the whole race is assumed to have said advantages. I have never seen a teacher set up an internship for a student. At most I've seen them recommend clubs to a class, but no one is made to sign up.

LMAO NO I don't mean I was forced to.
Internship is a four hour long class we take our junior and senior year.
We still have to be ACCEPTED to the class (20 out of 200) but it's not a physical labor to go searching for our own internships.
I'm saying, they were given to me so easily, I didn't need to go out and search for surgeons myself.

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant. I don't doubt your abilities, but I have never seen internships presented to someone. Here we have to know someone in the industry to get in.

From the sound of it Zanna that has more to do with socio-economic bracket than race.

OK, thanks everybody for posting.

I'm a girl, though, just heads up.

Also, I think some people skimming the thread are confusing ohmisszanna and myself...I certainly don't get thrown internships (or...anything, for that matter, I work as a waitress). I understand that special privileges are unfair when they are at the expense of someone else...what about the guy that gets a promotion before my dad does (when they were honestly of the same talent/level/whatever) because his boss told him that they "need somebody who is more approachable to people all over the country; things are different in the Midwest than in Texas." Basically saying that because he looks Mexican he isn't as approachable to appear at conferences and things like that. In my book, that's an unfair advantage that is being handed to my family directly because of my ethnicity.

If my family were millionaires, I would feel bad about using the "advantage" of being Hispanic. But that's not the case by a long shot.

I understand why people dislike AA and I agree with a lot of what is said. If my last name didn't give me away, I would definitely apply to at least one Ivy with no race marked and see if I got in on my credentials alone. Unfortunately, I can't.

Thanks to those who were nice, though. And I understand that you don't "dislike me as a person," more so that you just...dislike me because I get an unfair advantage. I would ask people to keep in mind, however, that there is nothing I can do about my ethnicity. It's not as if I'm getting these supposed special privileges because I wormed my way into something.

lol okay yeah don't confuse me with j07, I was making an analogy that it was just another factor.
I think we should drop this subject because a lot of people are getting confused hahahahaha

By the way whoamg-- that's what i'm trying to say. Some people have advantages they can't help. In my case, having that kind of school to go to. Just an EXAMPLE, not saying this had to do with being a URM. It was an analogy.

my school doesn't really tell us to take ec's or something. i have to reach out for all my interests/activities

YEAH MINE DOESN'T EITHER.
ahhh what is everyone talking about lol????
I'm killing this thread.

The end.
